Model Approach to Thermal Conductivity in Hybrid Graphene-Polymer Nanocomposites.

ABSTRACT: The thermal conductivity of epoxy nanocomposites filled with self-assembled hybrid nanoparticles composed of multilayered graphene nanoplatelets and anatase nanoparticles was described using an analytical model based on the effective medium approximation with a reasonable amount of input data. The proposed effective thickness approach allowed for the simplification of the thermal conductivity simulations in hybrid graphene@anatase TiO₂ nanosheets by including the phenomenological thermal boundary resistance. The sensitivity of the modeled thermal conductivity to the geometrical and material parameters of filling particles and the host polymer matrix, filler's mass concentration, self-assembling degree, and Kapitza thermal boundary resistances at emerging interfaces was numerically evaluated. A fair agreement of the calculated and measured room-temperature thermal conductivity was obtained.

Properties of Graphene-Related Materials Controlling the Thermal Conductivity of Their Polymer Nanocomposites.

Project description:Different types of graphene-related materials (GRM) are industrially available and have been exploited for thermal conductivity enhancement in polymers. These include materials with very different features, in terms of thickness, lateral size and composition, especially concerning the oxygen to carbon ratio and the possible presence of surface functionalization. Due to the variability of GRM properties, the differences in polymer nanocomposites preparation methods and the microstructures obtained, a large scatter of thermal conductivity performance is found in literature. However, detailed correlations between GRM-based nanocomposites features, including nanoplatelets thickness and size, defectiveness, composition and dispersion, with their thermal conductivity remain mostly undefined. In the present paper, the thermal conductivity of GRM-based polymer nanocomposites, prepared by melt polymerization of cyclic polybutylene terephtalate oligomers and exploiting 13 different GRM grades, was investigated. The selected GRM, covering a wide range of specific surface area, size and defectiveness, secure a sound basis for the understanding of the effect of GRM properties on the thermal conductivity of their relevant polymer nanocomposites. Indeed, the obtained thermal conductivity appeares to depend on the interplay between the above GRM feature. In particular, the combination of low GRM defectiveness and high filler percolation density was found to maximize the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites.

Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of Polyamide-Based Nanocomposites Containing Graphene Oxide Sheets Decorated with Compatible Polymer Brushes.

Project description:Polyamide-based nanocomposites containing graphene platelets decorated with poly(acrylamide) brushes were prepared and characterized. The brushes were grafted from the surface of graphene oxide (GO), a thermally conductive additive, using atom transfer radical polymerization, which led to the formation of the platelets coated with covalently tethered polymer layers (GO_PAAM), accounting for ca. 31% of the total mass. Polyamide-6 (PA6) nanocomposites containing 1% of GO_PAAM were formed by extrusion followed by injection molding. The thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite was 54% higher than that of PA6 even for such a low content of GO. The result was assigned to strong interfacial interactions between the brushes and PA6 matrix related to hydrogen bonding. Control nanocomposites containing similarly prepared GO decorated with other polymer brushes that are not able to form hydrogen bonds with PA6 revealed no enhancement of the conductivity. Importantly, the nanocomposite containing GO_PAAM also demonstrated larger tensile strength without deteriorating the elongation at break value, which was significantly decreased for the other coated platelets. The proposed approach enhances the interfacial interactions thanks to the covalent tethering of dense polymer brushes on 2D fillers and may be used to improve thermal properties of other polymer-based nanocomposites with simultaneous enhancement of their mechanical properties.

Molecular Weight Segregation and Thermal Conductivity of Polydisperse Wax-Graphene Nanocomposites.

Project description:Paraffin waxes are a promising material for heat storage with high energy density. Their low thermal conductivity, which limits the speed of charging and discharging in heat buffers, was previously shown to be improved by adding graphene nanofillers. In the present study, using molecular dynamics simulations, the segregation by molecular weight of polydisperse paraffin near graphene flakes is investigated. In liquid bidisperse paraffin composed of decane and triacontane, an aligned layer containing mainly triacontane was observed next to the graphene. Upon slow cooling, the wax crystallised into distinct layers parallel to the graphene sheet, with much stronger segregation by molecular weight than in the crystallised bidisperse wax without graphene. For polydisperse wax, the segregation effect was much less pronounced. The molten paraffin had a somewhat higher concentration of the longest chains in the first layers next to the graphene, but during crystallisation, the molecular weight segregation was only slightly increased. Measurements of crystallinity using an alternative version of the method developed by Yamamoto showed that the layers of wax were highly aligned parallel to the graphene, both in the solid state with all wax crystallised and in the liquid state with one layer of aligned wax above and below the graphene. Thermal conductivity was increased in planes parallel to the graphene flakes. The strong segregation of chain lengths in the bidisperse wax resulted in clear differences in thermal conductivity in the segregated regions. The less segregated polydisperse wax showed less variation in thermal conductivity.

Spider Web-Inspired Graphene Skeleton-Based High Thermal Conductivity Phase Change Nanocomposites for Battery Thermal Management.

Project description:Phase change materials (PCMs) can be used for efficient thermal energy harvesting, which has great potential for cost-effective thermal management and energy storage. However, the low intrinsic thermal conductivity of polymeric PCMs is a bottleneck for fast and efficient heat harvesting. Simultaneously, it is also a challenge to achieve a high thermal conductivity for phase change nanocomposites at low filler loading. Although constructing a three-dimensional (3D) thermally conductive network within PCMs can address these problems, the anisotropy of the 3D framework usually leads to poor thermal conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the alignment of fillers. Inspired by the interlaced structure of spider webs in nature, this study reports a new strategy for fabricating highly thermally conductive phase change composites (sw-GS/PW) with a 3D spider web (sw)-like structured graphene skeleton (GS) by hydrothermal reaction, radial freeze-casting and vacuum impregnation in paraffin wax (PW). The results show that the sw-GS hardly affected the phase transformation behavior of PW at low loading. Especially, sw-GS/PW exhibits both high cross-plane and in-plane thermal conductivity enhancements of ~ 1260% and ~ 840%, respectively, at an ultra-low filler loading of 2.25 vol.%. The thermal infrared results also demonstrate that sw-GS/PW possessed promising applications in battery thermal management.

Thermal conductivity of polymer composites with the geometrical characteristics of graphene nanoplatelets.

Project description:One of the most important physical factors related to the thermal conductivity of composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is the dimensions of the GNPs, that is, their lateral size and thickness. In this study, we reveal the relationship between the thermal conductivity of polymer composites and the realistic size of GNP fillers within the polymer composites (measured using three-dimensional (3D) non-destructive micro X-ray CT analysis) while minimizing the effects of the physical parameters other than size. A larger lateral size and thickness of the GNPs increased the likelihood of the matrix-bonded interface being reduced, resulting in an effective improvement in the thermal conductivity and in the heat dissipation ability of the composites. The thermal conductivity was improved by up to 121% according to the filler size; the highest bulk and in-plane thermal conductivity values of the composites filled with 20 wt% GNPs were 1.8 and 7.3 W/m·K, respectively. The bulk and in-plane thermal conductivity values increased by 650 and 2,942%, respectively, when compared to the thermal conductivity values of the polymer matrix employed (0.24 W/m·K).

Thermal Percolation Behavior in Thermal Conductivity of Polymer Nanocomposite with Lateral Size of Graphene Nanoplatelet.

Project description:In this study, the thermal percolation behavior for the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites according to the lateral size of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was studied. When the amount of GNPs reached the critical concentration, a rapid increase in thermal conductivity and thermal percolation behavior of the nanocomposites were induced by the GNP network. Interestingly, as the size of GNPs increased, higher thermal conductivity and a lower percolation threshold were observed. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite containing 30 wt.% M25 GNP (the largest size) was 8.094 W/m·K, and it was improved by 1518.8% compared to the polymer matrix. These experimentally obtained thermal conductivity results for below and above the critical content were theoretically explained by applying Nan's model and the percolation model, respectively, in relation to the GNP size. The thermal percolation behavior according to the GNP size identified in this study can provide insight into the design of nanocomposite materials with excellent heat dissipation properties.

Non-Covalent Interactions on Polymer-Graphene Nanocomposites and Their Effects on the Electrical Conductivity.

Project description:It is well known that a small number of graphene nanoparticles embedded in polymers enhance the electrical conductivity; the polymer changes from being an insulator to a conductor. The graphene nanoparticles induce several quantum effects, non-covalent interactions, so the percolation threshold is accelerated. We studied five of the most widely used polymers embedded with graphene nanoparticles: polystyrene, polyethylene-terephthalate, polyether-ketone, polypropylene, and polyurethane. The polymers with aromatic rings are affected mainly by the graphene nanoparticles due to the π-π stacking, and the long-range terms of the dispersion corrections are predominant. The polymers with linear structure have a CH-π stacking, and the short-range terms of the dispersion corrections are the important ones. We used the action radius as a measuring tool to quantify the non-covalent interactions. This action radius was the main parameter used in the Monte-Carlo simulation to obtain the conductivity at room temperature (300 K). The action radius was the key tool to describe how the percolation transition works from the fundamental quantum levels and connect the microscopic study with macroscopic properties. In the Monte-Carlo simulation, it was observed that the non-covalent interactions affect the electronic transmission, inducing a higher mean-free path that promotes the efficiency in the transmission.

Thermal Conductivity and Phase-Change Properties of Boron Nitride-Lead Oxide Nanoparticle-Doped Polymer Nanocomposites.

Project description:Thermally conductive phase-change materials (PCMs) were produced using the crosslinked Poly (Styrene-block-Ethylene Glycol Di Methyl Methacrylate) (PS-PEG DM) copolymer by employing boron nitride (BN)/lead oxide (PbO) nanoparticles. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) methods were used to research the phase transition temperatures, the phase-change enthalpies (melting enthalpy (ΔHm), and crystallization enthalpies (ΔHc)). The thermal conductivities (λ) of the PS-PEG/BN/PbO PCM nanocomposites were investigated. The λ value of PS-PEG/BN/PbO PCM nanocomposite containing BN 13 wt%, PbO 60.90 wt%, and PS-PEG 26.10 wt% was determined to be 18.874 W/(mK). The crystallization fraction (Fc) values of PS-PEG (1000), PS-PEG (1500), and PS-PEG (10,000) copolymers were 0.032, 0.034, and 0.063, respectively. XRD results of the PCM nanocomposites showed that the sharp diffraction peaks at 17.00 and 25.28 °C of the PS-PEG copolymer belonged to the PEG part. Since the PS-PEG/PbO and the PS-PEG/PbO/BN nanocomposites show remarkable thermal conductivity performance, they can be used as conductive polymer nanocomposites for effective heat dissipation in heat exchangers, power electronics, electric motors, generators, communication, and lighting equipment. At the same time, according to our results, PCM nanocomposites can be considered as heat storage materials in energy storage systems.

Gamma irradiation influence on mechanical, thermal and conductivity properties of hybrid carbon nanotubes/montmorillonite nanocomposites.

Project description:A thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) based nanocomposite with the same weight ratio of hybrid nanofillers composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and montmorillonite nanoclay (DK4) was prepared using a melt blending technique with an internal mixer. The TPE composite was blended from polylactic acid (PLA), liquid natural rubber (LNR) as a compatibilizer and natural rubber (NR) in a volume ratio of 70:10:20, respectively. The weight ratio of CNTs and DK4 was 2.5 wt%. The prepared samples were exposed to gamma radiation at range of 0-250 kGy. After exposure to gamma radiation, the mechanical, thermo-mechanical, thermal and electrical conductivity properties of the composites were significantly higher than unirradiated TPE composites as the irradiation doses increased up to 150 kGy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed the good distribution and interaction between the nano-fillers and the matrix in the prepared TPE hybrid nanocomposites. In summary, the findings from this work definite that gamma irradiation might be a viable treatment to improve the properties of TPE nanocomposite for electronic packaging applications.

Enhanced thermal conductivity of nanocomposites with MOF-derived encapsulated magnetic oriented carbon nanotube-grafted graphene polyhedra.

Project description:It remains a challenge to develop highly polymer-based nanocomposite thermal interface materials, which can effectively remove heat developed during the miniaturization of electronic instruments. It has been reported that a large number of graphene-based nanocomposites exhibit excellent performance. However, it is still an issue to construct thermal conductive pathways by orientation arrangements with a low filler volume fraction. Herein, a high-thermal conductivity filler of magnetic carbon nanotube-grafted graphene polyhedra (Co@Co3O4-G) was exploited via the annealing of metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-67). Co@Co3O4-G can improve the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites obviously by forming oriented pathways for phonon transport in an external magnetic field. Therefore, the resulting nanocomposite displayed a high thermal conductivity of 2.11 W m-1 K-1 for only 8.7 vol%, which is 10 times higher than that of the pure epoxy resin. Core-shell magnetic cobalt oxide (Co@Co3O4) was encapsulated in situ in the nanoarchitecture to avoid falling off. Moreover, the equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulation verifies that Co@Co3O4-G had high thermal conductivity to effectively improve the heat dissipation of nanocomposites. This strategy provides an approach for developing high-performance thermal management materials and opens up the possibility for the pioneering applications of encapsulated magnetic-oriented thermal conductive fillers.
