Navon letters and composite faces: same or different processing mechanisms?

ABSTRACT: Navon letters and composite faces are two fascinating demonstrations of hierarchical organization in perception. Many researchers believe that the two types of stimuli and their associated tasks gauge comparable holistic mechanisms. This belief is so common that the two paradigms are now being applied in tandem to measure impaired holistic processing in prosopagnosic patients. But are Navon letters and composite faces processed in a similar fashion? In the present study we take a closer look at their apparent affinity. We gain novel insights into their underlying mechanisms by fitting parameters of the linear ballistic accumulator (LBA) model to empirical correct and incorrect response times (RTs). The results reveal major differences in processing between the two tasks. We conclude that despite the presence of a compelling surface similarity, Navon compound letters and composite faces tap into separate psychological processes.

Different neural mechanisms within occipitotemporal cortex underlie repetition suppression across same and different-size faces.

Project description:Repetition suppression (RS) (or functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation) refers to the reduction in blood oxygen level-dependent signal following repeated presentation of a stimulus. RS is frequently used to investigate the role of face-selective regions in human visual cortex and is commonly thought to be a "localized" effect, reflecting fatigue of a neuronal population representing a given stimulus. In contrast, predictive coding theories characterize RS as a consequence of "top-down" changes in between-region modulation. Differentiating between these accounts is crucial for the correct interpretation of RS effects in the face-processing network. Here, dynamic causal modeling revealed that different mechanisms underlie different forms of RS to faces in occipitotemporal cortex. For both familiar and unfamiliar faces, repetition of identical face images (same size) was associated with changes in "forward" connectivity between the occipital face area (OFA) and the fusiform face area (FFA) (OFA-to-FFA). In contrast, RS across image size was characterized by altered "backward" connectivity (FFA-to-OFA). In addition, evidence was higher for models in which information projected directly into both OFA and FFA, challenging the role of OFA as the input stage of the face-processing network. These findings suggest "size-invariant" RS to faces is a consequence of interactions between regions rather than being a localized effect.

Comparing the visual spans for faces and letters.

Project description:The visual span-the number of adjacent text letters that can be reliably recognized on one fixation-has been proposed as a sensory bottleneck that limits reading speed (Legge, Mansfield, & Chung, 2001). Like reading, searching for a face is an important daily task that involves pattern recognition. Is there a similar limitation on the number of faces that can be recognized in a single fixation? Here we report on a study in which we measured and compared the visual-span profiles for letter and face recognition. A serial two-stage model for pattern recognition was developed to interpret the data. The first stage is characterized by factors limiting recognition of isolated letters or faces, and the second stage represents the interfering effect of nearby stimuli on recognition. Our findings show that the visual span for faces is smaller than that for letters. Surprisingly, however, when differences in first-stage processing for letters and faces are accounted for, the two visual spans become nearly identical. These results suggest that the concept of visual span may describe a common sensory bottleneck that underlies different types of pattern recognition.

Project description:BackgroundEosinophilic myocarditis (EM) is a rare form of myocarditis with various aetiologies and dire consequences if not diagnosed and treated expeditiously.Case summaryWe report three cases of EM at different stages of the disease with differing clinical manifestations. We highlight the diagnostic workup including the role of multimodality imaging and endomyocardial biopsy (EMB), and the treatment strategies.DiscussionEM is an underdiagnosed and potentially life-threatening disease. Therefore, a high clinical suspicion for EM should arise when patients with signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease develop hypereosinophilia or vice versa. Early identification of this condition using multimodality imaging and EMB is of paramount importance as the disease may progress to the irreversible late fibrotic stage if treatment is delayed.

Priming global and local processing of composite faces: revisiting the processing-bias effect on face perception.

Project description:We used the composite-face illusion and Navon stimuli to determine the consequences of priming local or global processing on subsequent face recognition. The composite-face illusion reflects the difficulty of ignoring the task-irrelevant half-face while attending the task-relevant half if the half-faces in the composite are aligned. On each trial, participants first matched two Navon stimuli, attending to either the global or the local level, and then matched the upper halves of two composite faces presented sequentially. Global processing of Navon stimuli increased the sensitivity to incongruence between the upper and the lower halves of the composite face, relative to a baseline in which the composite faces were not primed. Local processing of Navon stimuli did not influence the sensitivity to incongruence. Although incongruence induced a bias toward different responses, this bias was not modulated by priming. We conclude that global processing of Navon stimuli augments holistic processing of the face.

MiR-223-3p in Cancer Development and Cancer Drug Resistance: Same Coin, Different Faces.

Project description:MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are mighty post-transcriptional regulators in cell physiology and pathophysiology. In this review, we focus on the role of miR-223-3p (henceforth miR-223) in various cancer types. MiR-223 has established roles in hematopoiesis, inflammation, and most cancers, where it can act as either an oncogenic or oncosuppressive miRNA, depending on specific molecular landscapes. MiR-223 has also been linked to either the sensitivity or resistance of cancer cells to treatments in a context-dependent way. Through this detailed review, we highlight that for some cancers (i.e., breast, non-small cell lung carcinoma, and glioblastoma), the oncosuppressive role of miR-223 is consistently reported in the literature, while for others (i.e., colorectal, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers, and acute lymphocytic leukemia), an oncogenic role prevails. In prostate cancer and other hematological malignancies, although an oncosuppressive role is frequently described, there is less of a consensus. Intriguingly, NLRP3 and FBXW7 are consistently identified as miR-223 targets when the miRNA acts as an oncosuppressor or an oncogene, respectively, in different cancers. Our review also describes that miR-223 was increased in biological fluids or their extracellular vesicles in most of the cancers analyzed, as compared to healthy or lower-risk conditions, confirming the potential application of this miRNA as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in the clinic.

Processing of facial expressions of same-race and other-race faces: distinct and shared neural underpinnings.

Project description:People understand others' emotions quickly from their facial expressions. However, facial expressions of ingroup and outgroup members may signal different social information and thus be mediated by distinct neural activities. We investigated whether there are distinct neuronal responses to fearful and happy expressions of same-race (SR) and other-race (OR) faces. We recorded electroencephalogram from Chinese adults when viewing an adaptor face (with fearful/neutral expressions in Experiment 1 but happy/neutral expressions in Experiment 2) and a target face (with fearful expressions in Experiment 1 but happy expressions in Experiment 2) presented in rapid succession. We found that both fearful and happy (vs neutral) adaptor faces increased the amplitude of a frontocentral positivity (P2). However, a fearful but not happy (vs neutral) adaptor face decreased the P2 amplitudes to target faces, and this repetition suppression (RS) effect occurred when adaptor and target faces were of the same race but not when of different races. RS was observed on two late parietal/central positive activities to fearful/happy target faces, which, however, occurred regardless of whether adaptor and target faces were of the same or different races. Our findings suggest that early affective processing of fearful expressions may engage distinct neural activities for SR and OR faces.

Perceived emotional expressions of composite faces.

Project description:The eye and mouth regions serve as the primary sources of facial information regarding an individual's emotional state. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the relative importance of those two information sources in the identification of different emotions. The stimuli were composite facial images, in which different expressions (Neutral, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Contempt, and Surprise) were presented in the eyes and the mouth. Participants (21 women, 11 men, mean age 25 years) rated the expressions of 7 congruent and 42 incongruent composite faces by clicking on a point within the valence-arousal emotion space. Eye movements were also monitored. With most incongruent composite images, the perceived emotion corresponded to the expression of either the eye region or the mouth region or an average of those. The happy expression was different. Happy eyes often shifted the perceived emotion towards a slightly negative point in the valence-arousal space, not towards the location associated with a congruent happy expression. The eye-tracking data revealed significant effects of congruency, expressions and interaction on total dwell time. Our data indicate that whether a face that combines features from two emotional expressions leads to a percept based on only one of the expressions (categorical perception) or integration of the two expressions (dimensional perception), or something altogether different, strongly depends upon the expressions involved.

Facial resemblance increases the attractiveness of same-sex faces more than other-sex faces.

Project description:Our reactions to facial self-resemblance could reflect either specialized responses to cues of kinship or by-products of the general perceptual mechanisms of face encoding and mere exposure. The adaptive hypothesis predicts differences in reactions to self-resemblance in mating and prosocial contexts, while the by-product hypothesis does not. Using face images that were digitally transformed to resemble participants, I showed that the effects of resemblance on attractiveness judgements depended on both the sex of the judge and the sex of the face being judged: facial resemblance increased attractiveness judgements of same-sex faces more than other-sex faces, despite the use of identical procedures to manipulate resemblance. A control experiment indicated these effects were caused neither by lower resemblance of other-sex faces than same-sex faces, nor by an increased perception of averageness or familiarity of same-sex faces due to prototyping or mere exposure affecting only same-sex faces. The differential impact of self-resemblance on our perception of same-sex and other-sex faces supports the hypothesis that humans use facial resemblance as a cue of kinship.

Co-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation. The Same Enantioselection Pattern for Different Mechanisms.

Project description:The mechanism of the recently reported catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of enyne 1 catalyzed by the Co-(R,R)-QuinoxP* complex was studied by DFT. Conceivable pathways for the Co(I)-Co(III) mechanism were computed together with a Co(0)-Co(II) catalytic cycle. It is commonly assumed that the exact nature of the chemical transformations taking place along the actually operating catalytic pathway determine the sense and level of enantioselection of the catalytic reaction. In this work, two chemically different mechanisms reproduced the experimentally observed perfect stereoselection of the same handedness. Moreover, the relative stabilities of the transition states of the stereo induction stages were controlled via exactly the same weak disperse interactions between the catalyst and the substrate.

Annotation of epilepsy clinic letters for natural language processing.

Project description:BackgroundNatural language processing (NLP) is increasingly being used to extract structured information from unstructured text to assist clinical decision-making and aid healthcare research. The availability of expert-annotated documents for the development and validation of NLP applications is limited. We created synthetic clinical documents to address this, and to validate the Extraction of Epilepsy Clinical Text version 2 (ExECTv2) NLP pipeline.MethodsWe created 200 synthetic clinic letters based on hospital outpatient consultations with epilepsy specialists. The letters were double annotated by trained clinicians and researchers according to agreed guidelines. We used the annotation tool, Markup, with an epilepsy concept list based on the Unified Medical Language System ontology. All annotations were reviewed, and a gold standard set of annotations was agreed and used to validate the performance of ExECTv2.ResultsThe overall inter-annotator agreement (IAA) between the two sets of annotations produced a per item F1 score of 0.73. Validating ExECTv2 using the gold standard gave an overall F1 score of 0.87 per item, and 0.90 per letter.ConclusionThe synthetic letters, annotations, and annotation guidelines have been made freely available. To our knowledge, this is the first publicly available set of annotated epilepsy clinic letters and guidelines that can be used for NLP researchers with minimum epilepsy knowledge. The IAA results show that clinical text annotation tasks are difficult and require a gold standard to be arranged by researcher consensus. The results for ExECTv2, our automated epilepsy NLP pipeline, extracted detailed epilepsy information from unstructured epilepsy letters with more accuracy than human annotators, further confirming the utility of NLP for clinical and research applications.
