Project description:Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is an indicator of imbalance in lipid metabolism and has been associated with a variety of metabolic diseases. Hand Grip Strength (HGS) is an important indicator for assessing muscle function and overall health. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between NHHR and HGS, with the aim of revealing how lipid metabolism affects muscle strength and may provide an early indication of metabolic health and muscle dysfunction. We collected demographic and clinical data from 6,573 adults aged 20-60 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2011 to 2014.NHHR is defined as the ratio of total cholesterol minus high-density lipoprotein levels (HDL-C) divided by HDL-C. HGS is expressed as relative grip strength and is defined as the sum of the maximum readings for each hand/body mass index ratio. Among the data analysis techniques used in this study were multifactor linear regression, smoothed curve fitting, subgroups, and interactions. There was a negative correlation between NHHR and HGS in the 6573 participants included. After adjusting for all covariates, each unit increase in log2-NHHR was associated with a 0.28 [-0.28 (-0.31, -0.26)] decrease in HGS, and this negative correlation remained stable across subgroups (p < 0.01 for the test of trend). The analyses also identified a nonlinear association between NHHR and HGS with an inflection point of 1.74. Interaction tests showed that the negative correlation between NHHR and HGS differed significantly across age, gender, and stratification by diabetes status. Our study suggests that there may be a negative correlation between HGS and NHHR in adults aged 20-60 years in the U.S. Considering that a decline in HGS is an important manifestation of sarcopenia, it may be relevant to the prevention and control of sarcopenia through close detection and management of NHHR.

Project description:BackgroundMental health issues among middle-aged and older adults are gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have shown that relative grip strength is associated with cardiovascular diseases and various cancers, but its relationship with depression remains unclear.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included data from adults aged 50 years and older from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Relative grip strength is calculated by dividing the maximum absolute grip strength of both hands by BMI. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to evaluate the depressive outcome. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to assess the association between relative grip strength and depression.ResultsIn this study, a total of 3,639 participants (≥50 years) with a mean age of 64.3 ± 9.3 years were enrolled, of whom 48.9% were male. Compared with individuals with lower relative handgrip strength in Q1 (≤1.64 kg/BMI), the adjusted OR values for relative handgrip strength and depression in Q2 (1.64-2.17 kg/BMI), Q3 (2.17-2.84 kg/BMI), and Q4 (≥2.84 kg/BMI) were 0.69 (95% CI: 0.51, 0.93, p = 0.016), 0.36 (95% CI: 0.24, 0.55, p < 0.001), and 0.32 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.51, p < 0.001), respectively. The relationship between relative grip strength and depression presented an L-shaped curve (nonlinear, p = 0.006), with an inflection point of roughly 2.98 kg/BMI. Among participants with relative grip strength < 2.98 kg/BMI, the OR of incident depression was 0.41 (95% CI: 0.30-0.55, p < 0.001).ConclusionOur findings indicated that relative grip strength was inversely associated with incident depression and demonstrated an L-shaped relationship among U.S. middle-aged and older adults. Relative grip strength could be the indicator for future screening of mental health.

Project description:PurposeThis study was conducted to investigate the distributions of the triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-C ratio, and to explore their usefulness as markers of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adolescents.MethodsWe obtained data for 2,721 adolescents (1,436 boys and 1,285 girls) aged 10-18 years who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2008 to 2010. International Diabetes Federation criteria were used to define MetS.ResultsThere were no significant gender-related differences in TG/HDL-C or TC/HDL-C ratios. These lipid ratios showed significant associations with homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and waist circumference. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve to identify MetS were 0.947 for TG/HDL-C and 0.924 for TC/HDL-C, which were higher than that of HOMA-IR (0.822). Optimal cutoff values (sensitivity, specificity) of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios for MetS prediction were 3.3 (85.7%, 89.9%), and 3.8 (92.9%, 82.8%), respectively. Odds ratio (OR; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for MetS in adolescents with TC/HDL-C ratio above the cutoff value was 14.8 (2.8-77.4), while that for TG/HDL-C ratio about the cutoff value was 30.6 (6.0-157.6). In adolescents who had both lipid ratios above the cutoff values, the OR (95% CI) for MetS was 36.2 (7.2-186.2).ConclusionTG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios are useful markers of metabolic syndrome with high predictive value in Korean adolescents.

Project description:BackgroundCardiometabolic risk is high in patients with hypogonadism. Visceral adiposity index (VAI) and triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio are the practical markers of atherosclerosis and insulin resistance and independent predictors of cardiaovascular risk. To date, no study has evaluated VAI levels and TG/HDL-C ratio in hypogonadism.Subjects and methodsA total of 112 patients with congenital hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (CHH) (mean age, 21.7 ± 2.06 years) and 124 healthy subjects (mean age, 21.5 ± 1.27 years) were enrolled. The demographic parameters, VAI, TG/HDL-C ratio, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels were measured for all participants.ResultsThe patients had higher total cholesterol (p = 0.04), waist circumference, triglycerides, insulin, and HOMA-IR levels (p = 0.001 for all) than the healthy subjects. VAI and ADMA and TG/HDL-C levels were also higher in patients than in healthy subjects (p < 0.001 for all). VAI was weakly correlated with ADMA (r = 0.27, p = 0.015), HOMA-IR (r = 0.22, p = 0.006), hs-CRP (r = 0.19, p = 0.04), and total testosterone (r = -0.21, p = 0.009) levels, whereas TG/HDL-C ratio was weakly correlated weakly with ADMA (r = 0.30, p = 0.003), HOMA-IR (r = 0.22, p = 0.006), and total testosterone (r = -0.16, p = 0.03) levels. Neither VAI nor TG/HDL-C ratio determined ADMA, HOMA-IR, and hs-CRP levels.ConclusionsThe results of this study demonstrate that patients with hypogonadism have elevated VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio. These values are significantly correlated with the surrogate markers of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, the predictive roles of VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio are not significant. Prospective follow-up studies are warranted to clarify the role of VAI and TG/HDL-C ratio in predicting cardiometabolic risk in patients with hypogonadism.

Project description:Objective The triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio is related to insulin resistance (IR). However, information about whether or not the TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) subclasses in the Japanese population is limited. Methods In total, 1,068 Japanese subjects who underwent an annual health examination and who were not taking medications were recruited. The association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and LDL subclasses was investigated using correlation, multiple regression, and receiver operating characteristic analyses. Results A correlation analysis revealed that both malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) and small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) were positively associated with the TG/HDL-C ratio. Furthermore, a multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the TG/HDL-C ratio was positively associated with MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C in both men and women. The multiple logistic regression analysis also revealed that the TG/HDL-C ratio was positively associated with the upper tertile of MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C in men and women. The LDL-C levels increased with the increasing TG/HDL-C ratio. The MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C are known to be positively associated with LDL-C. However, within the same LDL-C range, both MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C levels increased with the TG/HDL-C ratio, except for MDA-LDL levels in the LDL-C <112 mg/dL group in women. These results further supported the notion that the TG/HDL-C ratio was positively associated with the MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C levels, especially in the higher LDL-C range, in both men and women. The optimal cut-off points of the TG/HDL-C ratio for the upper tertile of MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C were 1.85 and 2.03 in men and 0.88 and 1.30 in women, respectively. Conclusion The TG/HDL-C ratio is positively associated with MDA-LDL and sdLDL-C in Japanese subjects. The relationship was particularly notable in subjects with high LDL-C levels.

Project description:PurposeThe non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is a crucial lipid marker associated with various cardiovascular diseases. However, its relationship with kidney injury, particularly albuminuria, remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the association between NHHR and macroalbuminuria in U.S. adults.Patients and methodsThis cross-sectional study utilized data from the 1999-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). NHHR was calculated as (Total cholesterol - HDL cholesterol)/HDL cholesterol. Macroalbuminuria was defined by an albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) >300 mg/g. Logistic regression, smoothed curve fitting, subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analysis were employed to assess the relationship between NHHR and macroalbuminuria.ResultsA total of 41,225 participants were included in the analysis. Higher NHHR was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of macroalbuminuria (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.13-1.59, p=0.0007). Subgroup analysis revealed a stronger association in participants with BMI ≥30 kg/m2(OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.44-2.47, p<0.01). Sensitivity analysis revealed that the association remained robust even after excluding participants taking medications that affect lipid metabolism.ConclusionIn U.S. adults, an increased likelihood of incident NHHR levels of macroalbuminuria is positively associated and is more pronounced in those with a BMI ≥30kg/m2.

Project description:Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, an indicator of atherogenic dyslipidemia, is a predictor of cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in the general population and has been correlated with atherosclerotic events. Whether the TG/HDL-C ratio can predict CV outcomes and survival in dialysis patients is unknown. We performed this prospective, observational cohort study and enrolled 602 dialysis patients (539 hemodialysis and 63 peritoneal dialysis) from a single center in Taiwan followed up for a median of 3.9 years. The outcomes were the occurrence of CV events, CV death, and all-cause mortality during follow-up. The association of baseline TG/HDL-C ratio with outcomes was explored with Cox regression models, which were adjusted for demographic parameters and inflammatory/nutritional markers. Overall, 203 of the patients experienced CV events and 169 patients died, of whom 104 died due to CV events. Two hundred fifty-four patients reached the composite CV outcome. Patients with higher TG/HDL-C levels (quintile 5) had a higher incidence of CV events (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 2.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-3.47), CV mortality (adjusted HR 1.91, 95% CI 1.07-3.99), composite CV outcome (adjusted HR 2.2, 95% CI 1.37-3.55), and all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 1.94, 95% CI 1.1-3.39) compared with the patients in quintile 1. However, in diabetic dialysis patients, the TG/HDL-C ratio did not predict the outcomes. The TG/HDL-C ratio is a reliable and easily accessible predictor to evaluate CV outcomes and survival in prevalent nondiabetic dialysis patients. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01457625.

Project description:Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus can lead to serious complications such as respiratory failure, requiring mechanical ventilation or ICU care, and can even result in death, especially in older patients with comorbidities. The ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL), a biomarker of atherosclerotic dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, is related to cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. We aimed to evaluate the link between serious complications of COVID-19 and TG/HDL in the general population. Methods We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 3,933 COVID-19 patients from a nationwide cohort in Korea spanning from January 1 to June 4, 2020. TG/HDL ratio was calculated from the national health screening examination data underwent before the COVID-19 infection. Serious complications of COVID-19 were defined as a composite of high-flow oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), and mortality. We employed logistic regression analysis to investigate the relationship between the TG/HDL ratio and the likelihood of developing severe complications within 2 months of the diagnosis. To visualize this association, we used a smoothing spline plot based on the generalized additive regression model. Multivariate analysis was performed with adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, lifestyle measures, and comorbidities. Results Among the 3,933 COVID-19 patients, the proportion of serious complications was 7.53%. Regarding individual outcomes, the number of patients who received high-flow oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, ICU care, and died was 84 (2.14%), 122 (3.10%), 173 (4.40%), and 118 (3.00%), respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression, a positive association was found between TG/HDL ratio and serious complications of COVID-19 (adjusted OR, 1.09; 95% CI [1.03–1.15], p = 0.004). Conclusion Our study revealed a significant positive association between TG/HDL ratio and the risk of developing severe complications in COVID-19-infected patients. While this finding provides valuable insight into the potential prognostic role of TG/HDL ratio in COVID-19, further studies are needed to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms behind this relationship.

Project description:BackgroundAs an innovative lipid parameter, NHHR (the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) can serve as a valuable tool for assessing cardiovascular disease risk. Nevertheless, the relationship between NHHR and the risk of kidney stones remains unexplored.MethodsA cross-sectional survey utilized data from the National Health and Population Survey (NHANES) database in the United States spanning from 2007 to 2018. Distinct statistical analyses were applied, including weighted logistic regression, stratified and interaction analysis and restricted cubic spline curve (RCS) models, to examine the correlation between NHHR and the incidence of kidney stones.ResultsThis analysis encompassed 24,664 participants, with 9.63% reporting incidents of kidney stones. Following multivariate logistic regression and comprehensive adjustments, participants in NHHR quartile 4 (OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.12, 1.60, P < 0.01) exhibited a significantly increased risk of kidney stones compared to those in NHHR quartile 1 (Q1). The RCS result further illustrated a non-linear correlation between NHHR and the incidence of kidney stones. The result of subgroup analysis manifested that participants without diabetes had a higher risk of kidney stones when measured high NHHR levels compared those with diabetes (p for interaction < 0.05).ConclusionElevated NHHR levels were found to be associated with an increased risk of kidney stones. Based on these findings, NHHR appears to be a promising predictive indicator for the occurrence of kidney stones.

Project description:The objective of this study was to investigate the association between triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), and related parameters (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC) with prehypertension and hypertension over 45 years old. According to the blood pressure diagnosis, the enrolled individuals were divided into two groups, which were prehypertension and hypertension. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for confounders, the highest quartile groups of TG/HDL-c, TyG, and related parameters showed a significantly increased risk of hypertension compared to the lowest quartile groups, and there was associated with hypertension when comparing the highest TG/HDL-c to the lowest TG/HDL-c and corresponding ORs were 1.416 (1.234, 1.625) and 1.029 (0.893, 1.187), respectively. Furthermore, when comparing the fourth quartile to the first quartile of TG/HDL-c, TyG index, and related parameters, respectively, both corresponding ORs of hypertension were higher than prehypertension. Elevated TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC index, and TG/HDL-c ratio levels were associated with hypertension in individuals over 45 years. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to compare the predictive ability of each parameter in identifying people with hypertension suggested that the TyG-WC index ([Area under the curve] AUC: 0.601 [CI: 0.588-0.615]), TyG-BMI, and TyG were more significant than TG/HDL-c in distinguishing hypertension. However, in the prehypertension population, the area under the ROC curve for TyG-BMI (0.543 [CI: 0.530-0.556]) was better than that of other parameters. They have the potential to become cost-effective monitors in the hierarchical management of hypertension.
