Project description:Owing to their outstanding characteristics, carbon based nanofluids (CbNFs) have been applied to various advanced heat transfer and cooling technologies. It was claimed that these CbNFs can considerably improve the properties of the base working fluids. Among all the thermal characteristics, the thermal conductivity (λ) is regarded as the primary parameter to be considered for the application of nanofluids (NFs). In the present research study we measured for the first time both λ and thermal diffusivity (aT) of very stable fullerene (C60)-based NFs in liquid phase (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene and 1,2-dicholorobenzene) by the transient multi-current hot wire technique at atmospheric pressure in a wide range of temperature (254-323 K). Similar to the base liquids (BLs), we observed a slight decrease in λ with an increase in temperature. Additionally, compared to the BLs λ was reduced upon the addition of C60. The results were compared with the predicted ones using different theoretical models. Not much variation in aT was observed between the C60 NFs and the corresponding BLs due partly to the small variation of λ with the addition of C60.

Project description:A mode-mismatched thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) technique, in a pump-probe two-laser-beam configuration, was employed for the experimental determination of the thermal properties of four selected well-characterized polyolefin homopolymer films. We investigated the thermal diffusivity (D) and thermal conductivity (κ) of high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, and polypropylene. We also measured the structural properties (i.e., average molecular weight, polydispersity index, branching number), along with the rheological and thermal properties (i.e., melting point, specific heat capacity Cp, degree of crystallinity) of samples by high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC), rheometric mechanical spectrometry (RMS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and densitometry. The relationship between microstructural properties such as degree of crystallinity, D, and κ was investigated. The results show that there is good correlation between the degree of crystallinity and D. The TL technique enables measurement of D in semitransparent thin films within an uncertainty of 4%.

Project description:Nanophononic materials have recently arisen as a promising way for controlling heat transport, mirroring the results in macroscopic phononic materials for sound transmission, filtering and attenuation applications. Here we present a Finite Element numerical simulation of the transient propagation of an acoustic Wave-Packet in a 2D nanophononic material, which allows to identify the effect of the nanostructuration on the acoustic attenuation length and thus on the transport regime for the vibrational energy. Assuming elastic behavior in the matrix and in the inclusions, we find that the rigidity contrast between them not only tunes the apparent attenuation length of the wave packet along its main trajectory, but gives rise to different behaviours, from weak to strong scattering, and waves pinning. As a consequence, different energy transport regimes can be identified in the three-parameter space of the excitation frequency, inclusions size and rigidity contrast, leading to the identification of a combination of parameters allowing for the shortest attenuation distance. These results could have applications both in the field of acoustic insulation, and for the control of heat transfer.

Project description:The mixed π-π packing of the donor (D) and acceptor (A) molecules is the highlighting feature of the intermolecular interactions following charge transfer (CT) issues in organic cocrystal systems. There is an inverse relationship between the D-A interplanar distance and the intermolecular CT interaction. However, the D-A C-C surface close contact (relative areas) on the intermolecular CT interactions in organic cocrystal systems is rarely investigated. Herein, we designed and constructed a novel cocrystal and its solvate cocrystal. The structural and electrostatic potential analyses suggest that the solvation destroys the N-H···N hydrogen bond interaction between phenothiazine (PTZ) and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), which causes the TCNB molecules to have a 90° rotation along the normal axis of the PTZ plane. Thus, the D-A C-C surface close contact is enlarged, strengthening the intermolecular π-π stacking interactions and intermolecular CT interaction between PTZ and TCNB, which are further evidenced by the absorption and Raman spectroscopic analyses. This study provides rare evidence of the enlarged C-C surface close contact in the mixed packing between D and A that greatly contributes to the intermolecular CT interaction in a D-A cocrystal system. It also provides a deeper understanding of the role of solvation in the structure-property relationship of organic cocrystal materials.

Project description:Background and objectiveSkin thermal diffusivity plays a crucial role in various applications, including laser therapy and cryogenic skin cooling.This study investigates the correlation between skin thermal diffusivity and two important skin parameters, melanin content and erythema, in a cohort of 102 participants.MethodsAn in-house developed device based on transient temperature measurement was used to assess thermal diffusivity at different body locations. Melanin content and erythema were measured using a colorimeter. Statistical analysis was performed to examine potential correlations.ResultsThe results showed that the measured thermal diffusivity values were consistent with previous reports, with variations observed among subjects. No significant correlation was found between thermal diffusivity and melanin content or erythema. This suggests that other factors, such as skin hydration or epidermis thickness, may have a more dominant influence on skin thermal properties.ConlcusionThis research provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between skin thermal properties and physiological parameters, with potential implications for cosmetic and clinical dermatology applications.

Project description:Anisotropic heat-conducting materials play crucial roles in designing electronic, optoelectronic, and thermoelectric devices, where temperature and thermal stress are important. Despite substantial research efforts, a major obstacle to determining the anisotropic thermal diffusivity tensor in polycrystalline systems is the need for a robust, direct, and nondestructive technique to distinguish between distinct thermal diffusivities. Here, we demonstrate a conceptually unique thermal diffusivity microscope capable of performing high-resolution local measurements of anisotropic thermal diffusivity. The microscope features a unique micro four-point probe for fast, nondestructive scanning without calibration or extra sample preparation. It measures anisotropic thermal diffusivity based on thermal delay from a single heater. Through a series of experiments, we demonstrate that the anisotropy of the measured thermal diffusivity correlates excellently with the crystallographic direction of prototypical Bi2Te3. The anisotropic heat transport shows that the lattice contribution dominates the heat transport for both in- and out-of-plane directions.

Project description:Organic polymers are generally regarded as thermal insulators because amorphous arrangement of molecular chains reduces the mean free path of heat-conducting phonons. However, recent studies indicated that single chains of polymers with highly oriented structures could have high thermal conductivity than bulk polymers because stretched polymer chains effectively conduct phonons through polymeric covalent bonds. Here, we demonstrated the possibility of non-covalent virus assembly prepared by simple flow-induced methods toward high thermal conductive polymeric materials. Films with high thermal diffusivity composed of non-covalent bond-based assemblies of liquid crystalline filamentous viruses were prepared using a simple flow-induced orientation method. Structural and thermal characterization demonstrated that highly oriented structures of the viruses in the film were attributed to the high thermal diffusivity. Our results will open attractive opportunities for biomolecular-based thermally conductive soft materials even though the assemblies are based on non-covalent bonds.

Project description:The growing interest in heat-conducting nanofluids requires highly sensitive methods for analyzing the thermal properties. Thermal lens spectrometry (TLS), despite its advantages over classical methods, does not have a general approach for measuring and interpreting results for dispersed systems. In this paper, for nanofluids of silicon oxide in water in a wide range of concentrations and sizes, the selection of measurement parameters for transient and steady-state thermal lensing is justified, and the interpretation of the results of thermal diffusivity measurements is substantiated. The features of the measurements of thermal diffusivity by TLS under stationary states for dispersed systems are considered. Using this approach, it is possible to detect and distinguish thermal effects with high accuracy. For dispersions of silicon oxide, with increasing concentrations, the thermal diffusivity passes through a minimum threshold. Silicon oxide dispersions can be used both as coolants or as heat-removing liquids by selecting the particle size and concentration.

Project description:Practical techniques to identify heat routes at the nanoscale are required for the thermal control of microelectronic, thermoelectric, and photonic devices. Nanoscale thermometry using various approaches has been extensively investigated, yet a reliable method has not been finalized. We developed an original technique using thermal waves induced by a pulsed convergent electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode at room temperature. By quantifying the relative phase delay at each irradiated position, we demonstrate the heat transport within various samples with a spatial resolution of ~10 nm and a temperature resolution of 0.01 K. Phonon-surface scatterings were quantitatively confirmed due to the suppression of thermal diffusivity. The phonon-grain boundary scatterings and ballistic phonon transport near the pulsed convergent electron beam were also visualized.

Project description:Controlling thermal expansion (TE) behaviors of organic materials is challenging because several mechanisms can govern TE, such as noncovalent interaction strength and structural motions. Here, we report the first demonstration of tuning TE within organic solids by using a mixed cocrystal approach. The mixed cocrystals contain three unique molecules, two of which are present in variable ratios. These two molecules either lack or exhibit the ability to undergo molecular motion in the solid state. Incorporation of higher ratios of motion-capable molecules results in larger, positive TE along the motion direction. Addition of a motion-incapable molecule affords solids that undergo less TE. Fine-tuned TE behavior was attained by systematically controlling the ratio of motion-capable and -incapable molecules in each solid.
