Project description:Boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid particles were synthesized for use as a conductive filler for epoxy and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). BNNSs were prepared via the exfoliation of bulk boron nitride (BN) particles. Micrometer-sized BN particles were exfoliated to form nanosheets, and their surfaces were modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The amine groups on the BNNS surface were reacted with acid-treated MWCNTs, and covalently connected BNNS/MWCNT particles were synthesized. Moreover, a chemical reaction without agitation increased the particle connection during the hybrid particle preparation, resulting in a large number of MWCNTs being introduced onto the BNNSs. The BNNS/MWCNT hybrid particle composite had better thermal conductivity than BNNSs or a BNNS/MWCNT composite without chemical bonding based on the same filler contents and composition. This was because of the particle connections establishing three-dimensional heat conducting path in a matrix, which affected the thermal conductivity of the composite.

Project description:Epoxy composites with excellent thermal properties are highly promising for thermal management applications in modern electronic devices. In this work, we report the enhancement of the thermal conductivity of two different nanocomposites, using epoxy resins LY564 (epoxy 1) and LY5052 (epoxy 2), by incorporating multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) as fillers. The synergistic interaction between the 1D BNNT and 2D BNNS allows for improved thermal conductivity via several different mechanisms. The highest thermal conductivity was measured at a loading of 1/30 wt % of BNNT/BNNS, resulting in values of 2.6 and 3.4 Wm-1 K-1, respectively, for each epoxy matrix. This improvement is attributed to the formation of a three-dimensional heat flow path formed through intercalation of the nanotubes between the BNNS. The thermal conductivity of the epoxy 1 and 2 nanocomposites improved by 940 and 1500%, respectively, making them suitable as thermal interface materials in electronic applications requiring electrical resistivity.

Project description:As a porous material with a nanoscale skeleton, aerogel serves as a bridge between the nano- and macro-world. The integration of nanostructures into aerogels not only allows the combination of multidimensional features but also implies the possibility of unexpected properties. With great potential in many fields, boron nitride (BN) nanostructures have garnered growing attention and their existence in the aerogel state holds even more promise. However, the existing fabrication routes in the aerogel field, despite their validity and effectiveness, provide no panacea and are challenged by those incompatible with the current preparation toolbox, among which BN stands out. Herein, a multilevel assembly scheme is demonstrated for the elegant fabrication of BN aerogels consisting of varied superstructures, i.e., nanoribbons composed of tiny nanocrystals and nest-like structures tangled by nanofibers, the realization of which via the traditional molecular route or the classic assembly route is rather difficult. Interestingly, the resultant aerogels were found to exhibit great contrast in their hydrophilicity, which could be attributed to the microstructure difference. This study may raise the prospects of BN in energy, environment, bio-applications, etc. It may also give inspirations for the incorporation of other complex structures into aerogels.

Project description:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been generally interpreted as having an AA stacking sequence. Evidence is presented in this article indicating that typical commercial h-BN platelets (∼10-500 nm in thickness) exhibit stacks of parallel nanosheets (∼10 nm in thickness) predominantly in the AB sequence. The AB-stacked nanosheet occurs as a metastable phase of h-BN resulting from the preferred texture and lateral growth of armchair (110) planes. It appears as an independent nanosheet or unit for h-BN platelets. The analysis is supported by simulation of thin AB films (2-20 layers), which explains the unique X-ray diffraction pattern of h-BN. With this analysis and the role of pressure in commercial high-pressure high-temperature sintering (driving nucleation and parallelizing the in-plane crystalline growth of the nuclei), a growth mechanism is proposed for 2D h-BN (on a substrate) as `substrate-induced 2D growth', where the substrate plays the role of pressure.

Project description:The development of highly thermally conductive composites with excellent electrical insulation has attracted extensive attention, which is of great significance to solve the increasingly severe heat concentration issue of electronic equipment. Herein, we report a new strategy to prepare boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) via an ion-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation method. Then, silver nanoparticle (AgNP) modified BNNS (BNNS@Ag) was obtained by in situ reduction properties. The exfoliation yield of BNNS was approximately 50% via the ion-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation method. Subsequently, aramid nanofiber (ANF)/BNNS@Ag composites were prepared by vacuum filtration. Owing to the "brick-and-mortar" structure formed inside the composite and the adhesion of AgNP, the interfacial thermal resistance was effectively reduced. Therefore, the in-plane thermal conductivity of ANF/BNNS@Ag composites was as high as 11.51 W m-1 K-1, which was 233.27% higher than that of pure ANF (3.45 W m-1 K-1). The addition of BNNS@Ag maintained tensile properties (tensile strength of 129.14 MPa). Moreover, the ANF/BNNS@Ag films also had good dielectric properties and the dielectric constant was below 2.5 (103 Hz). Hence, the ANF/BNNS@Ag composite shows excellent thermal management performance, and the electrical insulation and mechanical properties of the matrix are retained, indicating its potential application prospects in high pressure and high temperature application environments.

Project description:One of the low-dimensional Boron Nitride (BN) forms, namely, cubic-BN (c-BN) nanodots (NDs), offers a variety of novel opportunities in battery, biology, deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes, sensors, filters, and other optoelectronic applications. To date, the attempts towards producing c-BN NDs were mainly performed under extreme high-temperature/high-pressure conditions and resulted in c-BN NDs with micrometer sizes, mixture of different BN phases, and containing process-related impurities/contaminants. To enhance device performance for those applications by taking advantage of size effect, pure, sub-100 nm c-BN NDs are necessary. In this paper, we report self-assembled growth of c-BN NDs on cobalt and nickel substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. It is found that the nucleation, formation, and morphological properties of c-BN NDs can be closely correlated with the nature of substrate including catalysis effect, lattice-mismatch-induced strain, and roughness, and growth conditions, in particular, growth time and growth temperature. The mean lateral size of c-BN NDs on cobalt scales from 175 nm to 77 nm with the growth time. The growth mechanism of c-BN NDs on metal substrates is concluded to be Volmer-Weber (VW) mode. A simplified two-dimensional numerical modeling shows that the elastic strain energy plays a key role in determining the total formation energy of c-BN NDs on metals.

Project description:Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) exhibit remarkable thermal and dielectric properties. However, their self-assembly and alignment in macroscopic forms remain challenging due to the chemical inertness of boron nitride, thereby limiting their performance in applications such as thermal management. In this study, we present a coaxial wet spinning approach for the fabrication of BNNSs/polymer composite fibers with high nanosheet orientation. The composite fibers were prepared using a superacid-based solvent system and showed a layered structure comprising an aramid core and an aramid/BNNSs sheath. Notably, the coaxial fibers exhibited significantly higher BNNSs alignment compared to uniaxial aramid/BNNSs fibers, primarily due to the additional compressive forces exerted at the core-sheath interface during the hot drawing process. With a BNNSs loading of 60 wt%, the resulting coaxial fibers showed exceptional properties, including an ultrahigh Herman orientation parameter of 0.81, thermal conductivity of 17.2 W m-1 K-1, and tensile strength of 192.5 MPa. These results surpassed those of uniaxial fibers and previously reported BNNSs composite fibers, making them highly suitable for applications such as wearable thermal management textiles. Our findings present a promising strategy for fabricating high-performance composite fibers based on BNNSs.

Project description:In order to improve the thermal conductivity of 30 wt % synthetic graphite (SG)-filled polyketones (POKs), conductive fillers such as multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hexagonal boron nitride (BN) were used in this study. Individual and synergistic effects of CNTs and BN on 30 wt % synthetic graphite-filled POK on thermal conductivity were investigated. 1, 2, and 3 wt % CNT loading enhanced the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of POK-30SG by 42, 82, and 124% and 42, 94, and 273%, respectively. 1, 2, and 3 wt % BN loadings enhanced the in-plane thermal conductivity of POK-30SG by 25, 69, and 107% and through-plane thermal conductivity of POK-30SG by 92, 135, and 325%. It was observed that while CNT shows more efficient in-plane thermal conductivity than BN, BN shows more efficient through-plane thermal conductivity. The electrical conductivity value of POK-30SG-1.5BN-1.5CNT was obtained to be 1.0 × 10-5 S/cm, the value of which is higher than that of POK-30SG-1CNT and lower than that of POK-30SG-2CNT. While BN loading led to a higher heat deflection temperature (HDT) than CNT loading, the hybrid fillers of BNT and CNT led to the highest HDT value. Moreover, BN loading led to higher flexural strength and Izod-notched impact strength values than CNT loading.

Project description:To date, there has been limited reporting on the fabrication and properties of macroscopic sheet assemblies (specifically buckypapers) composed of carbon/boron nitride core-shell heteronanotubes (MWCNT@BNNT) or boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). Herein we report the synthesis of MWCNT@BNNTs via a facile method involving Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (APCVD) and the safe h-BN precursor ammonia borane. These MWCNT@BNNTs were used as sacrificial templates for BNNT synthesis by thermal oxidation of the core carbon. Buckypaper fabrication was facilitated by facile sonication and filtration steps. To test the thermal conductivity properties of these new buckypapers, in the interest of thermal management applications, we have developed a novel technique of advanced scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) that we call piercing SThM (pSThM). Our measurements show a 14% increase in thermal conductivity of the MWCNT@BNNT buckypaper relative to a control multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) buckypaper. Meanwhile, our BNNT buckypaper exhibited approximately half the thermal conductivity of the MWCNT control, which we attribute to the turbostratic quality of our BNNTs. To the best of our knowledge, this work achieves the first thermal conductivity measurement of a MWCNT@BNNT buckypaper and of a BNNT buckypaper composed of BNNTs not synthesized by high energy techniques.

Project description:Boron nitride (BN) aerogels are porous materials with a continuous three-dimensional network structure. They are attracting increasing attention for a wide range of applications. Here, we report the template-assisted synthesis of BN aerogels by catalyst-free, low-pressure chemical vapor deposition on graphene-carbon nanotube composite aerogels using borazine as the B and N sources with a relatively low temperature of 900 (°)C. The three-dimensional structure of the BN aerogels was achieved through the structural design of carbon aerogel templates. The BN aerogels have an ultrahigh specific surface area, ultralow density, excellent oil absorbing ability, and high temperature oxidation resistance. The specific surface area of BN aerogels can reach up to 1051 m(2) g(-1), 2-3 times larger than the reported BN aerogels. The mass density can be as low as 0.6 mg cm(-3), much lower than that of air. The BN aerogels exhibit high hydrophobic properties and can absorb up to 160 times their weight in oil. This is much higher than porous BN nanosheets reported previously. The BN aerogels can be restored for reuse after oil absorption simply by burning them in air. This is because of their high temperature oxidation resistance and suggests broad utility as water treatment tools.
