Project description:Chromoproteins (CPs) have unique colors and can be used in biological applications. In this work, a novel blue CP with a maximum absorption peak (λmax) at 608 nm was identified from the carpet anemone Stichodactyla gigantea (sgBP). In vivo expression of sgBP in zebrafish would change the appearance of the fishes to have a blue color, indicating the potential biomarker function. To enhance the color properties, the crystal structure of sgBP at 2.25 Å resolution was determined to allow structure-based protein engineering. Among the mutations conducted in the Gln-Tyr-Gly chromophore and chromophore environment, a S157C mutation shifted the λmax to 604 nm with an extinction coefficient (ε) of 58,029 M-1·cm-1 and darkened the blue color expression. The S157C mutation in the sgBP chromophore environment could affect the color expression by altering the deprotonation state of the phenolic group in the chromophore. Our results provide a structural basis for the blue color enhancement of the biomarker development.

Project description:A highly strained macrocycle comprising four [4]helicene panels, [4]cyclo[4]helicenylene ([4]CH, 1), was synthesized through a one-pot macrocyclization and chemically reduced by alkali metals (Na and K), revealing a four-electron reduction process. The resulting di-, tri-, and tetraanions of compound 1 were isolated and crystallographically characterized by X-ray diffraction. Owing to the four axially chiral bi[4]helicenyl fragments, a reversible stereo transformation of 1 between the (S,R,S,R)- and (S,S,R,R)-configurations was disclosed upon the two-electron uptake, which was rationally understood by theoretical calculations. The (S,S,R,R)-configuration of 1 2- was further stabilized in triply reduced and tetra-reduced states, where structural deformation led by charges and metal complexation was observed. This study proposed an approach to alter the configuration of cycloarylenes in addition to thermal treatment.

Project description:As a step towards developing a light-controlled reversible binding switch based on photochromic bisbenzospiropyran for investigating intracellular calcium signaling, substituted bisbenzospiropyran and phenolic chelators were synthesized and examined for metal binding strength. The complexation of these compounds with alkaline earth and zinc ions in methanol and buffer was characterized using NMR and luminescence spectroscopy. An increased length of convergent ligands on the rigid scaffold maintained binding affinity for Ca(2+) but decreased selectivity for Ca(2+) over Mg(2+). Results indicate that at least three carboxylate ligands are required for significant binding, and increased length of the ligands will result in a fully water-soluble photoswitch that exhibits two states with approximately 300-fold difference in binding affinity for Ca(2+).

Project description:So far, the development of new iodoargentate-based hybrids, especially those compounds with metal complex cations, and the understanding of their structure-activity relationships have been of vital importance but full of challenges. Herein, using the in-situ-generated metal complex cations as structural directing agents, three new iodoargentate-based hybrids, namely, [Co(phen)3]Ag2PbI6 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; 1), [Ni(5,5-dmpy)3]Ag7I9·CH3CN (5,5-dmpy = 5,5-dimethyl-2,2-bipyridine; 2) and [Co(5,5-dmpy)3]Ag5I8 (3), have been solvothermally prepared and then structurally characterized. Compound 1 represents one new heterometallic Ag-Pb-I compound characteristic of the chain-like [Ag2PbI6]n2n- anions. Compound 2 features the straight one-dimensional (1D) [Ag7I9]n2n- anionic moieties, while compound 3 contains infrequent two types of curved [Ag5I8]n3n- anions. Optical properties reveal that the title compounds exhibit interesting semiconductor behaviors with the band gaps of 1.59-2.78 eV, which endow them with good photoelectric switching performances under the alternate light irradiations. We also present their Hirshfeld surface analyses, and the theoretical studies (band structures, density of states (DOS) and partial density of states (PDOS)).

Project description:As a fast emerging topic, van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have been proposed to modify two-dimensional layered materials with desired properties, thus greatly extending the applications of these materials. In this work, the stacking characteristics, electronic structures, band edge alignments, charge density distributions and optical properties of blue phosphorene/transition metal dichalcogenides (BlueP/TMDs) vdW heterostructures were systematically studied based on vdW corrected density functional theory. Interestingly, the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum are located in different parts of BlueP/MoSe2, BlueP/WS2 and BlueP/WSe2 heterostructures. The MoSe2, WS2 or WSe2 layer can be used as the electron donor and the BlueP layer can be used as the electron acceptor. We further found that the optical properties under visible-light irradiation of BlueP/TMDs vdW heterostructures are significantly improved. In particular, the predicted upper limit energy conversion efficiencies of BlueP/MoS2 and BlueP/MoSe2 heterostructures reach as large as 1.16% and 0.98%, respectively, suggesting their potential applications in efficient thin-film solar cells and optoelectronic devices.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can respond to light in a number of interesting ways. Photochromism is observed when a structural change to the framework is induced by the absorption of light, which results in a color change. In this work, we show that introducing quinoxaline ligands to MUF-7 and MUF-77 (MUF = Massey University Framework) produces photochromic MOFs that change color from yellow to red upon the absorption of 405 nm light. This photochromism is observed only when the quinoxaline units are incorporated into the framework and not for the standalone ligands in the solid state. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy shows that organic radicals form upon irradiation of the MOFs. The EPR signal intensities and longevity depend on the precise structural details of the ligand and framework. The photogenerated radicals are stable for long periods in the dark but can be switched back to the diamagnetic state by exposure to visible light. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals bond length changes upon irradiation that are consistent with electron transfer. The multicomponent nature of these frameworks allows the photochromism to emerge by allowing through-space electron transfer, precisely positioning the framework building blocks, and tolerating functional group modifications to the ligands.

Project description:This study focuses on the self-assembly of a new flavin compound and its scaffolding function for a Cs+ ion. 7,8-Dimethyl-10-[4'-(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-isoalloxazine (FlH-MB) displays self-assembly in a DMSO solution and has strong dependence on the solvent. In the DMSO solution, both the resulting scaffold and the deprotonation of FlH-MB were demonstrated to induce complex formation with a Cs+ ion, which was investigated by UV-vis, 1H NMR, and fluorescence titrations. This complex formation involves both Coulombic and cation-π interactions through the Fl- site in an Fl--MB dimer.

Project description:Herein, we report on a solution based approach for the preparation of thin films of copper antimony sulfide, an emerging absorber material for third generation solar cells. In this work, copper and antimony xanthates are used as precursor materials for the formation of two different copper antimony sulfide phases: chalcostibite (CuSbS2) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13). Both phases were thoroughly investigated regarding their structural and optical properties. Moreover, thin films of chalcostibite and tetrahedrite were prepared on mesoporous TiO2 layers and photoinduced charge transfer in these metal sulfide/TiO2 heterojunctions was studied via transient absorption spectroscopy. Photoinduced charge transfer was detected in both the chalcostibite as well as the tetrahedrite sample, which is an essential property in view of applying these materials as light-harvesting agents in semiconductor sensitized solar cells.

Project description:A light-controlled reversible binding switch based on photochromic 3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran is under development for studying cellular oscillatory calcium signals. The binding affinities of the closed and open forms of substituted naphthopyran 1 for Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Sr(2+) in buffer were determined. The photochemically ring-opened form of the receptor exhibited increased affinity compared to the thermally stable closed form of the receptor. The binding affinity difference for Ca(2+) was approximately 77-fold at pH 7.6.

Project description:Electron-deficient heteroarenes based on dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTP) have been highly attractive due to their fascinating packing structures, broad absorption profiles, and promising applications in non-fullerene organic solar cells. However, the control of their crystal structures for superior charge transport still faces big challenges. Herein, a conformation engineering strategy is proposed to rationally manipulate the single crystal structure of BTP-series heteroarenes. The parent molecule BTPO-c has a 3D network crystal structure, which originates from its banana-shaped conformation. Subtracting one thiophene moiety from the central backbone leads to a looser brickwork crystal structure of the derivative BTPO-z because of its interrupted angular-shaped conformation. Further subtracting two thiophene moieties results in the derivative BTPO-l with a compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure due to its quasi-linear conformation with a unique dimer packing structure and short π-π stacking distance (3.30 Å). Further investigation of charge-transport properties via single-crystal organic transistors demonstrates that the compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure of BTPO-l leads to an excellent electron mobility of 3.5 cm2 V-1 s-1, much higher than that of BTPO-c with a 3D network (1.9 cm2 V-1 s-1) and BTPO-z with a looser brickwork structure (0.6 cm2 V-1 s-1). Notably, this study presents, for the first time, an elegant demonstration of the tunable single crystal structures of electron-deficient heteroarenes for efficient organic electronics.
