Topological transitions of the generalized Pancharatnam-Berry phase.

ABSTRACT: Distinct from the dynamical phase, in a cyclic evolution, a system's state may acquire an additional component, a.k.a. geometric phase. Recently, it has been demonstrated that geometric phases can be induced by a sequence of generalized measurements implemented on a single qubit. Furthermore, it has been predicted that these geometric phases may exhibit a topological transition as a function of the measurement strength. We demonstrate and study this transition experimentally by using an optical platform where the qubit is represented by the polarization of light and the weak measurement is performed by means of coupling with the spatial degree of freedom. Our protocol can be interpreted in terms of environment-induced geometric phases, whose values are topologically determined by the environment-system coupling strength. Our results show that the two limits of geometric phase induced by sequences of either weak or projective measurements are topologically distinct.

All-metallic high-efficiency generalized Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurface with chiral meta-atoms.

Project description:Metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase have attracted significant attention in the domains of subwavelength optics and electromagnetics. Conventional theory predicts that the PB phase is exactly twice the rotation angle of the anisotropic meta-atoms. Differently, a recent advance has demonstrated that the generalized PB phase representing multiple times of the rotation angle could be obtained with high-fold rotational symmetry meta-atoms, but it suffers from the low cross-polarization conversion efficiency (the theoretical upper limit of 25%) that impedes its further applications, especially for meta-atoms with rotational symmetry ≥3. Here, we verify that the chiral meta-atoms with high-fold rotational symmetries could produce the generalized PB phase. Besides, the all-metallic configuration is utilized to design C2, C3, and C5 chiral catenary meta-atoms to improve their efficiency and bandwidth. The equivalent air waveguide with low loss between two adjacent meta-atoms is formed to analyse the higher performances of the all-metallic scheme for the realization of the generalized PB phase compared with the metal-insulator-metal and all-dielectric C3 meta-atoms. As a proof of concept, four metadevices including two spin-Hall metadevices and two holograms are experimentally demonstrated and their maximum efficiency could exceed 83% in simulation. This work could provide a high-efficiency platform for the study of the generalized PB phase in linear and nonlinear optics.

Pancharatnam-Berry phase in condensate of indirect excitons.

Project description:The Pancharatnam-Berry phase is a geometric phase acquired over a cycle of parameters in the Hamiltonian governing the evolution of the system. Here, we report on the observation of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase in a condensate of indirect excitons (IXs) in a GaAs-coupled quantum well structure. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase is directly measured by detecting phase shifts of interference fringes in IX interference patterns. Correlations are found between the phase shifts, polarization pattern of IX emission, and onset of IX spontaneous coherence. The evolving Pancharatnam-Berry phase is acquired due to coherent spin precession in IX condensate and is observed with no decay over lengths exceeding 10 μm indicating long-range coherent spin transport.

Pancharatnam-Berry phase reversal via opposite-chirality-coexisted superstructures.

Project description:Recently discovered reflective Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PB phase) from chiral anisotropic media (e.g., cholesteric liquid crystal, CLC) has aroused great interest in the emerging frontier of planar optics. However, the single chirality of common CLCs results in the intrinsic limitation of the same spin-selective PB phase manipulation, which means the reversal of the input spin cannot realize the conjugated PB phase. In this work, an innovative scheme based on opposite-chirality-coexisted superstructures is proposed to simultaneously modulate orthogonal circular polarization and get PB phase reversal. Through refilling CLC into a washed-out polymer network with opposite chirality and delicate photo-patterned structures, reflective optical vortex (OV) with opposite topological charges and vector beams with conjugated spiral PB phases are efficiently generated depending on the incident polarization. Furthermore, OV holograms are encoded to reconstruct polarization-selective OV arrays, indicating the strong capability of such opposite-chirality-coexisted anisotropic media. This work provides a new compact platform for planar optics, and sheds light on the architectures and functionalities of chiral superstructures.

Functional THz emitters based on Pancharatnam-Berry phase nonlinear metasurfaces.

Project description:Recent advances in the science and technology of THz waves show promise for a wide variety of important applications in material inspection, imaging, and biomedical science amongst others. However, this promise is impeded by the lack of sufficiently functional THz emitters. Here, we introduce broadband THz emitters based on Pancharatnam-Berry phase nonlinear metasurfaces, which exhibit unique optical functionalities. Using these new emitters, we experimentally demonstrate tunable linear polarization of broadband single cycle THz pulses, the splitting of spin states and THz frequencies in the spatial domain, and the generation of few-cycle pulses with temporal polarization dispersion. Finally, we apply the ability of spin control of THz waves to demonstrate circular dichroism spectroscopy of amino acids. Altogether, we achieve nanoscale and all-optical control over the phase and polarization states of the emitted THz waves.

Nanometer Interlaced Displacement Metrology Using Diffractive Pancharatnam-Berry and Detour Phase Metasurfaces.

Project description:Resolving structural misalignments on the nanoscale is of utmost importance in areas such as semiconductor device manufacturing. Metaphotonics provides a powerful toolbox to efficiently transduce information on the nanoscale into measurable far-field observables. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel interlaced displacement sensing platform based on diffractive anisotropic metasurfaces combined with polarimetric Fourier microscopy capable of resolving a few nanometer displacements within a device layer. We show that the sensing mechanism relies on an interplay of Pancharatnam-Berry and detour phase shifts and argue how nanoscale displacements are transduced into specific polarization signatures in the diffraction orders. We discuss efficient measurement protocols suitable for high-speed metrology applications and lay out optimization strategies for maximal sensing responsivity. Finally, we show that the proposed platform is capable of resolving arbitrary two-dimensional displacements on a device.

Realization of tunable photonic spin Hall effect by tailoring the Pancharatnam-berry phase.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams whose polarization with a tunable spatial inhomogeneity can contribute to steering the space-variant PBP which creates a spin-dependent geometric phase gradient, thereby possibly realizing a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting. Our scheme provides a convenient method to manipulate the spin photon. The results can be extrapolated to other physical system with similar topological origins.

Grain-boundary topological phase transitions.

Project description:The formation and migration of disconnections (line defects constrained to the grain boundary [GB] plane with both dislocation and step character) control many of the kinetic and dynamical properties of GBs and the polycrystalline materials of which they are central constituents. We demonstrate that GBs undergo a finite-temperature topological phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. This phase transition corresponds to the screening of long-range interactions between (and unbinding of) disconnections. This phase transition leads to abrupt changes in the behavior of GB migration, GB sliding, and roughening. We analyze this KT transition through mean-field theory, renormalization group theory, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and examine how this transition affects microstructure-scale phenomena such as grain growth stagnation, abnormal grain growth, and superplasticity.

Photoinduced Topological Phase Transitions in Topological Magnon Insulators.

Project description:Topological magnon insulators are the bosonic analogs of electronic topological insulators. They are manifested in magnetic materials with topologically nontrivial magnon bands as realized experimentally in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) kagomé ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc), and they also possess protected magnon edge modes. These topological magnetic materials can transport heat as well as spin currents, hence they can be useful for spintronic applications. Moreover, as magnons are charge-neutral spin-1 bosonic quasiparticles with a magnetic dipole moment, topological magnon materials can also interact with electromagnetic fields through the Aharonov-Casher effect. In this report, we study photoinduced topological phase transitions in intrinsic topological magnon insulators in the kagomé ferromagnets. Using magnonic Floquet-Bloch theory, we show that by varying the light intensity, periodically driven intrinsic topological magnetic materials can be manipulated into different topological phases with different sign of the Berry curvatures and the thermal Hall conductivity. We further show that, under certain conditions, periodically driven gapped topological magnon insulators can also be tuned to synthetic gapless topological magnon semimetals with Dirac-Weyl magnon cones. We envision that this work will pave the way for interesting new potential practical applications in topological magnetic materials.

Controllable oscillated spin Hall effect of Bessel beam realized by liquid crystal Pancharatnam-Berry phase elements.

Project description:Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase has become an effective tool to realize the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) in recent years, due to its capacity of enhancing the spin-orbit interaction. Various forms of PSHEs have been proposed by tailoring the PB phase of light, however, the propagation trajectory control of the separated spin states has not been reported. In this paper, we realize the oscillated spin-dependent separation by using the well-designed PB phase optical elements based on the transverse-to-longitudinal mapping of Bessel beams. Two typical oscillated PSHEs, i.e., the spin states are circulated and reversed periodically, are experimentally demonstrated with two PB phase elements fabricated with liquid crystal. The displacements and periods of these oscillations can be controlled by changing the transverse vector of the input Bessel beam. The proposed method offers a new degree of freedom to manipulate the spin-dependent separation, and provides technical supports for the application in spin photonics.

Novel Quantum Criticality in Two Dimensional Topological Phase transitions.

Project description:Topological quantum phase transitions intrinsically intertwine self-similarity and topology of many-electron wave-functions, and divining them is one of the most significant ways to advance understanding in condensed matter physics. Our focus is to investigate an unconventional class of the transitions between insulators and Dirac semimetals whose description is beyond conventional pseudo relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian. At the transition without the long-range Coulomb interaction, the electronic energy dispersion along one direction behaves like a relativistic particle, linear in momentum, but along the other direction it behaves like a non-relativistic particle, quadratic in momentum. Various physical systems ranging from TiO2-VO2 heterostructure to organic material α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 under pressure have been proposed to have such anisotropic dispersion relation. Here, we discover a novel quantum criticality at the phase transition by incorporating the long range Coulomb interaction. Unique interplay between the Coulomb interaction and electronic critical modes enforces not only the anisotropic renormalization of the Coulomb interaction but also marginally modified electronic excitation. In connection with experiments, we investigate several striking effects in physical observables of our novel criticality.
