Project description:Use of multi-metallic catalysts to enhance reactions is an interesting research area, which has attracted much attention. In this work, we carried out the first work to prepare trimetallic electrocatalysts by a one-step co-electrodeposition process. A series of Cu-X-Y (X and Y denote different metals) catalysts were fabricated using this method. It was found that Cu10La1Cs1 (the content ratio of Cu2+, La3+, and Cs+ in the electrolyte is 10 : 1 : 1 in the deposition process), which had an elemental composition of Cu10La0.16Cs0.14 in the catalyst, formed a composite structure on three dimensional (3D) carbon paper (CP), which showed outstanding performance for CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce ethylene (C2H4). The faradaic efficiency (FE) of C2H4 could reach 56.9% with a current density of 37.4 mA cm-2 in an H-type cell, and the partial current density of C2H4 was among the highest ones up to date, including those over the catalysts consisting of Cu and noble metals. Moreover, the FE of C2+ products (C2H4, ethanol, and propanol) over the Cu10La1Cs1 catalyst in a flow cell reached 70.5% with a high current density of 486 mA cm-2. Experimental and theoretical studies suggested that the doping of La and Cs into Cu could efficiently enhance the reaction efficiency via a combination of different effects, such as defects, change of electronic structure, and enhanced charge transfer rate. This work provides a simple method to prepare multi-metallic catalysts and demonstrates a successful example for highly efficient CO2RR using non-noble metals.

Project description:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals continues to draw interest in renewable energy applications. Although many metal catalysts are active in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), their reactivity and selectivity are nonetheless hindered by the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The competition of the HER and CO2RR stems from the energy scaling relationship between their reaction intermediates. Herein, we predict that bimetallic monolayer electrocatalysts (BMEs) - a monolayer of transition metals on top of extended metal substrates - could produce dual-functional active sites that circumvent the scaling relationship between the adsorption energies of HER and CO2RR intermediates. The antibonding interaction between the adsorbed H and the metal substrate is revealed to be responsible for circumventing the scaling relationship. Based on extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identify 11 BMEs which are highly active and selective toward the formation of formic acid with a much suppressed HER. The H-substrate antibonding interaction also leads to superior CO2RR performance on monolayer-coated penta-twinned nanowires.

Project description:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is an attractive way to produce renewable fuel and chemical feedstock, especially when coupled with efficient CO2 capture and clean energy sources. On the fundamental side, research on improving CO2RR activity still revolves around late transition metal-based catalysts, which are limited by unfavorable scaling relations despite intense investigation. Here, we report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation into electrocatalytic CO2RR on Ti- and Mo-based MXene catalysts. Formic acid is found as the main product on Ti2CTx and Mo2CTx MXenes, with peak Faradaic efficiency of over 56% on Ti2CTx and partial current density of up to -2.5 mA cm-2 on Mo2CTx. Furthermore, simulations reveal the critical role of the Tx group: a smaller overpotential is found to occur at lower amounts of -F termination. This work represents an important step toward experimental demonstration of MXenes for more complex electrocatalytic reactions in the future.

Project description:We describe here the preparation and characterization of a photocathode assembly for CO2 reduction to CO in 0.1 M LiClO4 acetonitrile. The assembly was formed on 1.0 μm thick mesoporous films of NiO using a layer-by-layer procedure based on Zr(iv)-phosphonate bridging units. The structure of the Zr(iv) bridged assembly, abbreviated as NiO|-DA-RuCP2 2+-Re(i), where DA is the dianiline-based electron donor (N,N,N',N'-((CH2)3PO3H2)4-4,4'-dianiline), RuCP2+ is the light absorber [Ru((4,4'-(PO3H2CH2)2-2,2'-bipyridine)(2,2'-bipyridine))2]2+, and Re(i) is the CO2 reduction catalyst, ReI((4,4'-PO3H2CH2)2-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)3Cl. Visible light excitation of the assembly in CO2 saturated solution resulted in CO2 reduction to CO. A steady-state photocurrent density of 65 μA cm-2 was achieved under one sun illumination and an IPCE value of 1.9% was obtained with 450 nm illumination. The importance of the DA aniline donor in the assembly as an initial site for reduction of the RuCP2+ excited state was demonstrated by an 8 times higher photocurrent generated with DA present in the surface film compared to a control without DA. Nanosecond transient absorption measurements showed that the expected reduced one-electron intermediate, RuCP+, was formed on a sub-nanosecond time scale with back electron transfer to the electrode on the microsecond timescale which competes with forward electron transfer to the Re(i) catalyst at t 1/2 = 2.6 μs (k ET = 2.7 × 105 s-1).

Project description:The atomically precise metal electrocatalysts for driving CO2 reduction reactions are eagerly pursued as they are model systems to identify the active sites, understand the reaction mechanism, and further guide the exploration of efficient and practical metal nanocatalysts. Reported herein is a nanocluster-based electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which features a clear geometric and electronic structure, and more importantly excellent performance. The nanocatalysts with the molecular formula of [Ag17Cu10(dppm)4(PhC≡C)20H4]3+ have been obtained in a facile way. The unique metal framework of the cluster, with silver, copper, and hydride included, and dedicated surface structure, with strong (dppm) and labile (alkynyl) ligands coordinated, endow the cluster with excellent performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO. With the atomically precise electrocatalysts in hand, not only high reactivity and selectivity (Faradaic efficiency for CO up to 91.6%) but also long-term stability (24 h), are achieved.

Project description:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is an attractive approach for mitigating CO2 emissions and generating value-added products. Consequently, discovery of promising CO2RR catalysts has become a crucial task, and machine learning (ML) has been utilized to accelerate catalyst discovery. However, current ML approaches are limited to exploring narrow chemical spaces and provide only fragmentary catalytic activity, even though CO2RR produces various chemicals. Here, by merging pre-developed ML model and a CO2RR selectivity map, we establish high-throughput virtual screening strategy to suggest active and selective catalysts for CO2RR without being limited to a database. Further, this strategy can provide guidance on stoichiometry and morphology of the catalyst to researchers. We predict the activity and selectivity of 465 metallic catalysts toward four expected reaction products. During this process, we discover previously unreported and promising behavior of Cu-Ga and Cu-Pd alloys. These findings are then validated through experimental methods.

Project description:In the problem of electrochemical CO2 reduction, the discovery of earth-abundant, efficient, and selective catalysts is essential to enabling technology that can contribute to a carbon-neutral energy cycle. In this study, we adapt an optical high throughput screening method to study multi-metallic catalysts for CO2 electroreduction. We demonstrate the utility of the method by constructing catalytic activity maps of different alloyed elements and use X-ray scattering analysis by the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) method to gain insight into the structures of the most active compositions. Among combinations of four elements (Au, Ag, Cu, Zn), Au6Ag2Cu2 and Au4Zn3Cu3 were identified as the most active compositions in their respective ternaries. These ternary electrocatalysts were more active than any binary combination, and a ca. 5-fold increase in current density at potentials of -0.4 to -0.8 V vs. RHE was obtained for the best ternary catalysts relative to Au prepared by the same method. Tafel plots of electrochemical data for CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution indicate that the ternary catalysts, despite their higher surface area, are poorer catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction than pure Au. This results in high Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction to CO.

Project description:Overall water splitting and CO2 reduction are two very important reactions from the environmental viewpoint. The former produces hydrogen as a clean fuel and the latter decreases the amount of CO2 emissions and thus reduces greenhouse effects. Here, we prepare two types of copper molybdate, CuMoO4 and Cu3Mo2O9, and electrochemically investigate them for water splitting and CO2 reduction. Our findings show that Cu3Mo2O9 is a better electrocatalyst for full water splitting compared to CuMoO4. It provides overpotentials, which are smaller than the overpotentials of CuMoO4 by around 0.14 V at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 and 0.10 V at -0.4 mA cm-2, for water oxidation and hydrogen evolution reactions, respectively. However, CuMoO4 adsorbs CO2 and the reduced intermediates/products more strongly than Cu3Mo2O9. Such different behaviors of these electrocatalysts can be attributed to their different unit cells.

Project description:Steering the selectivity of electrocatalysts toward the desired product is crucial in the electrochemical reduction of CO2. A promising approach is the electronic modification of the catalyst's active phase. In this work, we report on the electronic modification effects on CuO-ZnO-derived electrocatalysts synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. Although the synthesis method yields spatially separated ZnO nanorods and distinct CuO particles, strong restructuring and intimate atomic mixing occur under the reaction conditions. This leads to interactions that have a profound effect on the catalytic performance. Specifically, all of the bimetallic electrodes outperformed the monometallic ones (ZnO and CuO) in terms of activity for CO production. Surprisingly, on the other hand, the presence of ZnO suppresses the formation of ethylene on Cu, while the presence of Cu improves CO production of ZnO. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies revealed that this catalytic effect is due to enhanced reducibility of ZnO by Cu and stabilization of cationic Cu species by the intimate contact with partially reduced ZnO. This suppresses ethylene formation while favoring the production of H2 and CO on Cu. These results show that using mixed metal oxides with different reducibilities is a promising approach to alter the electronic properties of electrocatalysts (via stabilization of cationic species), thereby tuning the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction performance.

Project description:Designing highly selective and energy-efficient electrocatalysts to minimize the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction in the electrochemical reduction of aqueous CO2 remains a challenge. In this study, we report that doping Pd with a small amount of Te could selectively convert CO2 to CO with a low overpotential. The PdTe/few-layer graphene (FLG) catalyst with a Pd/Te molar ratio of 1 : 0.05 displayed a maximum CO faradaic efficiency of about 90% at -0.8 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), CO partial current density of 4.4 mA cm-2, and CO formation turnover frequency of 0.14 s-1 at -1.0 V (vs. a RHE), which were 3.7-, 4.3-, and 10-fold higher than those of a Pd/FLG catalyst, respectively. Density functional calculations showed that Te adatoms preferentially bind at the terrace sites of Pd, thereby suppressing undesired hydrogen evolution, whereas CO2 adsorption and activation occurred on the high index sites of Pd to produce CO.
