Project description:ObjectiveTo investigate the influence of aerobic exercise on depression among the young people.Data sourcesPubMed, Web of science, Embase, Cochrane, EBSCO were searched from inception to November 2023.Study selectionRCT studies, assessing the use of aerobic exercise in young people aged 6-35 years and then determining the development of depression in young people (aged 6-35 years), were selected, and mean ± SD values adjusted for the presence of baseline depression were extracted.Data extraction and synthesisStudy quality was assessed using the Review manager 5.4.1 and Cochrane 5.1 item on risk of bias and precision of observational studies. Two reviewers conducted all review stages independently. Selected data were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis.Main outcomes and measuresThe included studies evaluated the relationship between aerobic exercise and depression at various time points among young individuals, and provided corresponding mean ± SD values. Depression diagnosis in the selected studies was conducted using the Depression Correlation Scale.ResultsAfter screening 2296 articles, 163 articles were selected for full-text review, and 8 of those were further reviewed. Ultimately, 12 studies, involving 658 individuals, were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis indicated that aerobic exercise could effectively improve depression in young people (d = -1.33, 95%CI: -1.78 ~ -0.87, P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that aerobic exercise was beneficial for both depression (d = -2.68, 95%CI: -3.87 ~ -1.48, P < 0.05) and non-depression (d = -0.85, 95%CI: -1.20 ~ -0.51, P < 0.05) conditions, as well as for low intensity (d = -0.93, 95%CI: -1.29 ~ 0.58, P < 0.05) and moderate intensity (d = -2.08,95%CI:-2.88 ~ -1.27, P < 0.05) exercises. Additionally, aerobic exercise was found to significantly alleviate depression in young people when performed for 40 min or less (d = -2.00,95%CI: -2.96 ~ -1.04, P < 0.05), whereas durations exceeding 40 min showed a lesser effect (d = -0.85,95%CI:-1.47 ~ -0.24, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the duration-based analysis revealed that aerobic exercise improved depression levels in young people regardless of duration, whether it was for less than 6 weeks (d = -1.27,95%CI: 2.12 ~ 0.14, P < 0.05), 6 to 11 weeks (d = 1.55, 95% CI: 2.16 ~ 0.94, P < 0.05), or more than 12 weeks (d = 1.00, 95% CI: -1.76 ~ -0.24,P < 0.05). Overall, these findings suggest that aerobic exercise is a promising intervention for alleviating depression in young individuals.ConclusionsBoth short (less than 40 min) and long (more than 40 min) periods of aerobic exercise were effective in improving depressive symptoms. However, the optimal duration of aerobic exercise may vary depending on the specific population and individual factors studied, such as age, health status, and exercise tolerance. Therefore, this study concluded that the most effective exercise regimen, 40 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise three times a week for 6 to 11 weeks, showed more significant improvement in depression indicators in individuals with depressive symptoms.

Project description:BackgroundPostpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent mental health problem with serious adverse consequences for affected women and their infants. Clinical trials have found that telehealth interventions for women with PPD result in increased accessibility and improved treatment effectiveness. However, no comprehensive synthesis of evidence from clinical trials by systematic review has been conducted.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of telehealth interventions in reducing depressive symptoms and anxiety in women with PPD. To enhance the homogeneity and interpretability of the findings, this systematic review focuses on PPD measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).MethodsPubMed, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, CNKI, and Wanfang were electronically searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of telehealth interventions for women with PPD from inception to February 28, 2021. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two researchers. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software.ResultsFollowing the search, 9 RCTs with a total of 1958 women with PPD were included. The EPDS (mean difference=-2.99, 95% CI -4.52 to -1.46; P<.001) and anxiety (standardized mean difference=-0.39, 95% CI -0.67 to -0.12; P=.005) scores were significantly lower in the telehealth group compared with the control group. Significant subgroup differences were found in depressive symptoms according to the severity of PPD, telehealth technology, specific therapy, and follow-up time (P<.001).ConclusionsTelehealth interventions could effectively reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety in women with PPD. However, better designed and more rigorous large-scale RCTs targeting specific therapies are needed to further explore the potential of telehealth interventions for PPD.Trial registrationPROSPERO CRD42021258541; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=258541.

Project description:BackgroundThe main objective of this review is to assess the effects of aerobic, resistance, and meditative movement exercise on sleep quality in patients with unipolar depression. A secondary goal is to ascertain the effects on sleep duration, sleepiness, daytime functioning, use of hypnotics, and adverse events.MethodsA systematic computerized search will be performed in the following online databases: PubMed, EMBASE (on Ovid), Cochrane Library, PsycINFO (on Ovid), SPORTDiscus (on EBSCOhost), CINHAL (on EBSCOhost), Clinicaltrials.gov , WHO International Clinical Trials Registry, OpenGrey, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Bibliographies of all included studies as well as any other relevant reviews identified via the search will be screened. Randomized trials using aerobic, resistance, or meditative movement exercise interventions which target sleep as a primary or secondary outcome will be included. The primary outcome will be differences in sleep quality at post-intervention. Secondary outcomes will be adverse events, differences in sleep duration, daytime sleepiness and functioning, and the use of hypnotics at post-intervention. Two authors will independently screen the identified records. Disagreement will be resolved by consensus or if no consensus can be reached by adjudication of a designated third reviewer. Data extraction will be done independently by two authors using a standardized and piloted data extraction sheet. Bias in individual studies will be assessed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool. The certainty of evidence across all outcomes will be evaluated using the CINeMA (Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis) framework. A frequentist network meta-analysis will be conducted. The systematic review and network meta-analysis will be presented according to the PRISMA for Network Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-NMA) guideline.DiscussionThis systematic review and network meta-analysis will provide a synthesis of the currently available evidence concerning the effects of aerobic, resistance, and meditative movement exercises on sleep in patients with unipolar depression. Project description:BackgroundPhysical activity (PA) is considered a favorable preventive intervention for postpartum depression (PPD), but evidence defining a corresponding dose-response relationship is lacking. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the protective effects of PA on PPD and define a potential dose-response relationship between them.MethodsPubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from 1968 to May 2022. Only randomized control trials (RCTs) and prospective studies were considered, and the PICOS tool was used to identify eligible articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Effect-size estimates were unified as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). We calculated the ORs and their 95% CI for studies that did not report them using the Practical Meta-Analysis Effect Size Calculator.ResultsA total of 23 studies were eligible, including 14 RCTs and 9 prospective cohort studies. The overall analysis showed a statistically significant positive association between PA and PPD prevention (adjusted OR = 0.73; 95% CI: 0.61-0.87; P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses indicated that studies conducted in Europe demonstrated a significant correlation between PA and reduced PPD risk (adjusted OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76-0.95, P = 0.004). Concerning PA type, sports activity was associated with relieving PPD symptoms (adjusted OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.78 to 1.00, P < 0.001), while work (adjusted OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.37-2.97, P = 0.065) and household activities (adjusted OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 0.89-1.52, P = 0.986) contributed to a greater risk of PPD. Our dose-response analysis revealed a reverse J-shaped trend between ascending PA duration and PPD incidence.ConclusionThis meta-analysis identified PA as a potential intervention to reduce the risk of PPD.
