Charge-loop current order and Z₃ nematicity mediated by bond order fluctuations in kagome metals.

ABSTRACT: Recent experiments on geometrically frustrated kagome metal AV₃Sb₅ (A = K, Rb, Cs) have revealed the emergence of the charge loop current (cLC) order near the bond order (BO) phase. However, the origin of the cLC and its interplay with other phases have been uncovered. Here, we propose a novel mechanism of the cLC state, by focusing on the BO phase common in kagome metals. The BO fluctuations in kagome metals, which emerges due to the Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon coupling, mediate the odd-parity particle-hole condensation that gives rise to the topological current order. Furthermore, the predicted cLC+BO phase gives rise to the Z₃-nematic state in addition to the giant anomalous Hall effect. The present theory predicts the close relationship between the cLC, the BO, and the nematicity, which is significant to understand the cascade of quantum electron states in kagome metals. The present scenario provides a natural understanding.

Drastic magnetic-field-induced chiral current order and emergent current-bond-field interplay in kagome metals.

Project description:In kagome metals, the chiral current order parameter [Formula: see text] with time-reversal-symmetry-breaking is the source of various exotic electronic states, while the method of controlling the current order and its interplay with the star-of-David bond order [Formula: see text] are still unsolved. Here, we reveal that tiny uniform orbital magnetization [Formula: see text] is induced by the chiral current order, and its magnitude is prominently enlarged under the presence of the bond order. Importantly, we derive the magnetic-field ([Formula: see text])-induced Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy expression [Formula: see text], which enables us to elucidate the field-induced current-bond phase transitions in kagome metals. The emergent current-bond-[Formula: see text] trilinear coupling term in the free energy, [Formula: see text], naturally explains the characteristic magnetic-field sensitive electronic states in kagome metals, such as the field-induced current order and the strong interplay between the bond and current orders. The GL coefficients of [Formula: see text] derived from the realistic multiorbital model are appropriate to explain various experiments. Furthermore, we discuss the field-induced loop current orders in the square lattice models that have been studied in cuprate superconductors.

Condensation of preformed charge density waves in kagome metals.

Project description:Charge density wave (CDW) is a spontaneous spatial modulation of charges in solids whose general microscopic descriptions are yet to be completed. Kagome metals of AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a chance to realize CDW intertwined with dimensional effects as well as their special lattice. Here, based on a state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulation, we propose that their phase transition to CDW is a condensation process of incoherently preformed charge orders. Owing to unavoidable degeneracy in stacking charge orders, phases of preformed orders on each layer are shown to fluctuate between a limited number of states with quite slower frequencies than typical phonon vibrations until reaching their freezing temperature. As the size of interfacial alkali atom increases, the fluctuations are shown to counterbalance the condensation of orderings, resulting in a maximized transition temperature for RbV3Sb5. Our results resolve controversial observations on their CDWs, highlighting a crucial role of their interlayer interactions.

Order-disorder charge density wave instability in the kagome metal (Cs,Rb)V3Sb5.

Project description:The origin of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV3Sb5 is still under great scrutiny. Here, we combine diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify a 3-dimensional precursor of the charge order at the L point that condenses into a CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a small broadening of the Einstein-type phonon mode on approaching TCDW. Our results point to the situation where the Fermi surface instability at the L point is of order-disorder type with critical growth of quasi-static domains. The experimental data indicate that the CDW consists on an alternating Star of David and trihexagonal distortions and its dynamics goes beyond the classical weak-coupling scenario and is discussed within strong-electron phonon coupling and non-adiabatic models.

Chiral excitonic order from twofold van Hove singularities in kagome metals.

Project description:Recent experiments on kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K,Rb,Cs) identify twofold van Hove singularities (TvHS) with opposite concavity near the Fermi energy, generating two approximately hexagonal Fermi surfaces - one electron-like and the other hole-like. Here we propose that a TvHS generates a novel time-reversal symmetry breaking excitonic order - arising due to bound pairs of electrons and holes located at opposite concavity van Hove singularities. We introduce a minimal model for the TvHS and investigate interaction induced many-body instabilities via the perturbative renormalisation group technique and a free energy analysis. Specialising to parameters appropriate for the kagome metals AV3Sb5, we construct a phase diagram comprising chiral excitons, charge density wave and a region of coexistence. We propose this as an explanation of a diverse range of experimental observations in AV3Sb5. Notably, the chiral excitonic state gives rise to a quantum anomalous Hall conductance, providing an appealing interpretation of the observed anomalous Hall effect in kagome metals. Possible alternative realisations of the TvHS mechanism in bilayer materials are also discussed. We suggest that TvHS open up interesting possibilities for correlated phases, enriching the set of competing ground states to include excitonic order.

Monolayer Kagome metals AV3Sb5.

Project description:Recently, layered kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) have emerged as a fertile platform for exploring frustrated geometry, correlations, and topology. Here, using first-principles and mean-field calculations, we demonstrate that AV3Sb5 can crystallize in a mono-layered form, revealing a range of properties that render the system unique. Most importantly, the two-dimensional monolayer preserves intrinsically different symmetries from the three-dimensional layered bulk, enforced by stoichiometry. Consequently, the van Hove singularities, logarithmic divergences of the electronic density of states, are enriched, leading to a variety of competing instabilities such as doublets of charge density waves and s- and d-wave superconductivity. We show that the competition between orders can be fine-tuned in the monolayer via electron-filling of the van Hove singularities. Thus, our results suggest the monolayer kagome metal AV3Sb5 as a promising platform for designer quantum phases.

Jamming and unusual charge density fluctuations of strange metals.

Project description:The strange metallic regime across a number of high-temperature superconducting materials presents numerous challenges to the classic theory of Fermi liquid metals. Recent measurements of the dynamical charge response of strange metals, including optimally doped cuprates, have revealed a broad, featureless continuum of excitations, extending over much of the Brillouin zone. The collective density oscillations of this strange metal decay into the continuum in a manner that is at odds with the expectations of Fermi liquid theory. Inspired by these observations, we investigate the phenomenology of bosonic collective modes and the particle-hole excitations in a class of strange metals by making an analogy to the phonons of classical lattices falling apart across an unconventional jamming-like transition associated with the onset of rigidity. By making comparisons to the experimentally measured dynamical response functions, we reproduce many of the qualitative features using the above framework. We conjecture that the dynamics of electronic charge density over an intermediate range of energy scales in a class of strongly correlated metals can be at the brink of a jamming-like transition.

Superconductivity and nematic order in a new titanium-based kagome metal CsTi3Bi5 without charge density wave order.

Project description:The cascade of correlated topological quantum states in the newly discovered vanadium-based kagome superconductors, AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs), with a Z2 topological band structure has sparked immense interest. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and electronic nematic order in high-quality single-crystals of a new titanium-based kagome metal, CsTi3Bi5, that preserves the translation symmetry, in stark contrast to the charge density wave superconductor AV3Sb5. Transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements show superconductivity with an onset superconducting transition temperature Tc of approximately 4.8 K. Using the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and Josephson scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the single crystals of CsTi3Bi5 exhibit two distinct superconducting gaps. Furthermore, the superconducting gaps break the six-fold crystal rotational symmetry down to two-fold. At low energies, we find that the quasiparticle interference patterns exhibit rotational-symmetry-breaking C2 patterns, revealing a nematic ordered normal state with the same nematic direction as in the superconducting state. Our findings uncover a novel superconducting state in CsTi3Bi5 and provide new insights for the intrinsic electron liquid crystal phases in kagome superconductors.

Magnetic-Field Tunable Intertwined Checkerboard Charge Order and Nematicity in the Surface Layer of Sr2 RuO4.

Project description:In strongly correlated electron materials, the electronic, spin, and charge degrees of freedom are closely intertwined. This often leads to the stabilization of emergent orders that are highly sensitive to external physical stimuli promising opportunities for technological applications. In perovskite ruthenates, this sensitivity manifests in dramatic changes of the physical properties with subtle structural details of the RuO6 octahedra, stabilizing enigmatic correlated ground states, from a hotly debated superconducting state via electronic nematicity and metamagnetic quantum criticality to ferromagnetism. Here, it is demonstrated that the rotation of the RuO6 octahedra in the surface layer of Sr2 RuO4 generates new emergent orders not observed in the bulk material. Through atomic-scale spectroscopic characterization of the low-energy electronic states, four van Hove singularities are identified in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. The singularities can be directly linked to intertwined nematic and checkerboard charge order. Tuning of one of these van Hove singularities by magnetic field is demonstrated, suggesting that the surface layer undergoes a Lifshitz transition at a magnetic field of ≈32T. The results establish the surface layer of Sr2 RuO4 as an exciting 2D correlated electron system and highlight the opportunities for engineering the low-energy electronic states in these systems.

Superconductivity in a breathing kagome metals ROs2 (R = Sc, Y, Lu).

Project description:We have successfully synthesized three osmium-based hexagonal Laves compounds ROs2 (R = Sc, Y, Lu), and discussed their physical properties. LeBail refinement of pXRD data confirms that all compounds crystallize in the hexagonal centrosymmetric MgZn2-type structure (P63/mmc, No. 194). The refined lattice parameters are a = b = 5.1791(1) Å and c = 8.4841(2) Å for ScOs2, a = b = 5.2571(3) Å and c = 8.6613(2) Å for LuOs2 and a = b = 5.3067(6) Å and c = 8.7904(1) Å for YOs2. ROs2 Laves phases can be viewed as a stacking of kagome nets interleaved with triangular layers. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and heat capacity measurements confirm bulk superconductivity at critical temperatures, Tc, of 5.36, 4.55, and 3.47 K for ScOs2, YOs2, and LuOs2, respectively. We have shown that all investigated Laves compounds are weakly-coupled type-II superconductors. DFT calculations revealed that the band structure of ROs2 is intricate due to multiple interacting d orbitals of Os and R. Nonetheless, the kagome-derived bands maintain their overall shape, and the Fermi level crosses a number of bands that originate from the kagome flat bands, broadened by interlayer interaction. As a result, ROs2 can be classified as (breathing) kagome metal superconductors.

Switchable chiral transport in charge-ordered kagome metal CsV3Sb5.

Project description:When electric conductors differ from their mirror image, unusual chiral transport coefficients appear that are forbidden in achiral metals, such as a non-linear electric response known as electronic magnetochiral anisotropy (eMChA)1-6. Although chiral transport signatures are allowed by symmetry in many conductors without a centre of inversion, they reach appreciable levels only in rare cases in which an exceptionally strong chiral coupling to the itinerant electrons is present. So far, observations of chiral transport have been limited to materials in which the atomic positions strongly break mirror symmetries. Here, we report chiral transport in the centrosymmetric layered kagome metal CsV3Sb5 observed via second-harmonic generation under an in-plane magnetic field. The eMChA signal becomes significant only at temperatures below [Formula: see text] 35 K, deep within the charge-ordered state of CsV3Sb5 (TCDW ≈ 94 K). This temperature dependence reveals a direct correspondence between electronic chirality, unidirectional charge order7 and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking due to putative orbital loop currents8-10. We show that the chirality is set by the out-of-plane field component and that a transition from left- to right-handed transport can be induced by changing the field sign. CsV3Sb5 is the first material in which strong chiral transport can be controlled and switched by small magnetic field changes, in stark contrast to structurally chiral materials, which is a prerequisite for applications in chiral electronics.
