Energy transfer of imbalanced Alfvenic turbulence in the heliosphere.

ABSTRACT: Imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence is a universal process playing a crucial role in energy transfer in space, astrophysical, and laboratory plasmas. A fundamental and long-lasting question about the imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence is how and through which mechanism the energy transfers between scales. Here, we show that the energy transfer of imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence is completed by coherent interactions between Alfvén waves and co-propagating anomalous fluctuations. These anomalous fluctuations are generated by nonlinear couplings instead of linear reflection. We also reveal that the energy transfer of the waves and the anomalous fluctuations is carried out mainly through local-scale and large-scale nonlinear interactions, respectively, responsible for their bifurcated power-law spectra. This work unveils the energy transfer physics of imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence, and advances the understanding of imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence observed by Parker Solar Probe in the inner heliosphere.

Project description:Mesoscale cortical activity can be defined as the organization of activity of large neuron populations into collective action, forming time-dependent patterns such as traveling waves. Although collective action may play an important role in the cross-scale integration of brain activity and in the emergence of cognitive behavior, a comprehensive formulation of the laws governing its dynamics is still lacking. Because collective action processes are macroscopic with respect to neuronal activity, these processes cannot be described directly with methods and models developed for the microscale (individual neurons).To identify the characteristic features of mesoscopic dynamics, and to lay the foundations for a theoretical description of mesoscopic activity in the hippocampus, we conduct a comprehensive examination of observational data of hippocampal local field potential (LFP) recordings. We use the strong correlation between rat running-speed and the LFP power to parameterize the energy input into the hippocampus, and show that both the power and non-linearity of collective action (e.g., theta and gamma rhythms) increase with increased speed. Our results show that collective-action dynamics are stochastic (the precise state of a single neuron is irrelevant), weakly non-linear, and weakly dissipative. These are the principles of the theory of weak turbulence. Therefore, we propose weak turbulence a theoretical framework for the description of mesoscopic activity in the hippocampus. The weak turbulence framework provides a complete description of the cross-scale energy exchange (the energy cascade). It uncovers the mechanism governing major features of LFP spectra and bispectra, such as the physical meaning of the exponent α of power-law LFP spectra (e.g., f -α, where f is the frequency), the strengthening of theta-gamma coupling with energy input into the hippocampus, as well as specific phase lags associated with their interaction. Remarkably, the weak turbulence framework is consistent with the theory of self organized criticality, which provides a simple explanation for the existence of the power-law background spectrum. Together with self-organized criticality, weak turbulence could provide a unifying approach to modeling the dynamics of mesoscopic activity.

Project description:Sites with great potential for electricity generation from tidal stream energy are often characterized by high levels of turbulence and severe wave climates. These characteristics are known to substantially increase turbine blade loadings fluctuations, which may lead to premature device failure and blade fatigue. In order to be commercially competitive, tidal energy devices must function in turbulent environments for approximately 25 years without requiring major maintenance operations. Hence, knowledge of turbulence parameters prior to device deployment is crucial to avoid unnecessary costs with overengineering and maintenance. Aiming to support the development of tidal energy in Australia, the Tidal Energy in Australia (AUSTEn) Project identified two sites with potential for tidal energy: Banks Strait, Tasmania and Clarence Strait, Northern Territory. The datasets presented here reveal high-frequency current velocity measurements taken throughout the water column with Nortek Signature new generation Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (AD2CPs) at one measurement station in Banks Strait and two in Clarence Strait. Measurement periods are between 2 and 3 months, which are significantly long deployment periods for turbulence characterization in tidal energy sites compared to other datasets available in the literature. Processing steps include the removal of bad quality data points using the manufacturer's software Ocean Contour, considering low correlation, side lobe interference and high amplitude spikes. These data have been used by Perez et al.(2021) to calculate turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), turbulence intensity (TI), Reynolds stresses, integral length scales, TKE dissipation and production rates as well as to discuss wave-turbulence interaction and the application of decomposition methods. In the dataset collected in Banks Strait, velocity fluctuation enhancements caused by wave orbital velocities were mitigated using the Synchrosqueezing Wavelet Transform (SWT) decomposition method. Turbulence estimates were organized by month and are revealed in the post-processed data files. Here we provide raw, processed and post-processed data files, which were made publicly available through the University of Queensland UQ eSpace repository. These datasets may be reused to further advance the understanding of turbulence and its impacts on tidal turbine performance as well as to help establish international guidelines for turbulence measurements in tidal energy site assessments.
