Construct validity of the German version of the Emotion Reactivity Scale.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Emotional reactivity is an important construct to consider when studying mental disorders. This study was conducted to translate and assess the factor structure, construct validity and internal consistency of a German version of the Emotion Reactivity Scale (ERS), which is an originally English questionnaire assessing three components of emotional reactivity: sensitivity, intensity and persistence of emotions.

Methods

The German ERS and a range of questionnaires used to assess convergent and discriminant validity were completed by 334 German speaking Swiss participants.

Results

Confirmatory factor analysis showed strong support for a bi-factor model, with evaluation indices pointing to a unidimensional construct rather than to domain specific factors. The questionnaire showed good reliability and the factor structure was similar across gender. The ERS showed convergent validity with general psychopathology, behavioral inhibition, negative affect, orienting sensitivity, depressive symptoms and symptoms of disordered eating, and discriminant validity with behavioral activation and alcohol consumption.

Conclusions

Findings support the construct validity of the German ERS and suggest that it assesses a unidimensional construct with high internal consistency. Accounting for the unidimensional nature of the scale and aiming for efficient assessment tools, future research could, based on these findings, develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a short version of the ERS.

Project description:BackgroundImplementation climate is an organizational construct theorized to facilitate the adoption and delivery of evidence-based practices. Within schools, teachers often are tasked with implementing universal prevention programs. Therefore, they are ideal informants when assessing school implementation climate for initial and continuous implementation improvement efforts. The purpose of this study was to examine the construct validity (i.e., factor structure and convergent/divergent validity) of a school-adapted measure of strategic implementation climate called the School Implementation Climate Scale (SICS).MethodsConfirmatory factor analyses of SICS data, collected from 441 teachers in 52 schools, were used to compare uncorrelated and correlated first-order factor models and a second-order hierarchical model. Correlations with other school measures were examined to assess SICS convergent and divergent validities.ResultsResults demonstrated acceptable internal consistency for each SICS subscale (αs > 0.80 for all subscales) and construct validity of the hypothesized factor structure of the SICS with three new scales. The hierarchical second-order factor structure with eight first-order factors was found to best model the SICS data. Correlations with other school measures were in the expected direction and magnitude.ConclusionsResults from this study provide psychometric evidence that supports the use of the SICS to inform the implementation research and practice in schools.Plain language summarySchools are busy trying to implement various universal programs and systems to help support kids in their growth. Beginning and sustaining these efforts is quite challenging, and there is need for tools and ideas to help those implementation efforts. One concept is implementation climate, which is broadly the school staff's perception of the implementation support for a given practice. However, no measure currently exists to help schools assess their implementation climate. The goal of our study was to adapt a measure of implementation climate used in other settings to the school environment. We used feedback from educational experts to make changes and used various analyses to determine if the newly adapted measure was psychometrically sound. Findings suggest the new measure is usable to guide implementation efforts in schools.

Project description:BackgroundThe Chinese version of the Activities of Daily Living Rating Scale III (ADLRS-III), which has 10 domains, is commonly used for assessing activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with schizophrenia. However, construct validity (i.e., unidimensionality) for each domain of the ADLRS-III is unknown, limiting the explanations of the test results.PurposeThis main purpose of this study was to examine unidimensionality of each domain in the ADLRS-III. We also examined internal consistency and ceiling/floor effects in patients with schizophrenia.MethodsFrom occupational therapy records, we obtained 304 self-report data of the ADLRS-III. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the 10 one-factor structures. If a domain showed an insufficient model fit, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed to investigate the factor structure and choose one factor representing the original construct. Internal consistency was examined using Cronbach's alpha (α). Ceiling and floor effects were determined by the percentage of patients with the maximum and minimum scores in each domain, respectively.ResultsCFA analyses showed that 4 domains (i.e., leisure, picture recognition, literacy ability, communication tools use) had sufficient model fits. These 4 domains had acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.79-0.87) and no ceiling/floor effects, except the leisure domain which had a ceiling effect. The other 6 domains showed insufficient model fits. The EFA results showed that these 6 domains were two-factor structures.ConclusionThe results supported unidimensional constructs of the leisure, picture recognition, literacy ability, and communication tool uses domains. The sum scores of these 4 domains can be used to represent their respective domain-specific functions. Regarding the 6 domains with insufficient model fits, we have explained the two factors of each domain and chosen one factor to represent its original construct. Future users may use the items from the chosen factors to assess domain-specific functions in patients with schizophrenia.
