Project description:The main objective of this article is to provide angle-dependent spectral reflectance measurements of various materials in the near infrared spectrum. In contrast to already existing reflectance libraries, e.g., NASA ECOSTRESS and Aster reflectance libraries, which consider only perpendicular reflectance measurements, the presented dataset includes angular resolution of the material reflectance. To conduct the angle-dependent spectral reflectance material measurements, a new measurement device based on a 945 nm time-of-flight camera is used, which was calibrated using Lambertian targets with defined reflectance values at 10, 50, and 95%. The spectral reflectance material measurements are taken for an angle range of 0° to 80° with 10° incremental steps and stored in table format. The developed dataset is categorized with a novel material classification, divided into four different levels of detail considering material properties and distinguishing predominantly between mutually exclusive material classes (level 1) and material types (level 2). The dataset is published open access on the open repository Zenodo with record number 7467552 and version 1.0.1 [1]. Currently, the dataset contains 283 measurements and is continuously extended in new versions on Zenodo.

Project description:SignificanceThe imaging depth of microscopy techniques is limited by the ability of light to penetrate biological tissue. Recent research has addressed this limitation by combining a reflectance confocal microscope with the NIR-II (or shortwave infrared) spectrum. This approach offers significant imaging depth, is straightforward in design, and remains cost-effective. However, the imaging system, which relies on intrinsic signals, could benefit from adjustments in its optical design and post-processing methods to differentiate cortical cells, such as neurons and small blood vessels.AimWe implemented a phase contrast detection scheme to a reflectance confocal microscope using NIR-II spectral range as illumination.ApproachWe analyzed the features retrieved in the images while testing the imaging depth. Moreover, we introduce an acquisition method for distinguishing dynamic signals from the background, allowing the creation of vascular maps similar to those produced by optical coherence tomography.ResultsThe phase contrast implementation is successful to retrieve deep images in the cortex up to 800 μm using a cranial window. Vascular maps were retrieved at similar cortical depth and the possibility of combining multiple images can provide a vessel network.ConclusionsPhase contrast reflectance confocal microscopy can improve the outlining of cortical cell bodies. With the presented framework, angiograms can be retrieved from the dynamic signal in the biological tissue. Our work presents an optical implementation and analysis techniques from a former microscope design.

Project description:Mineral identification using machine learning requires a significant amount of training data. We built a library of 2D hyperspectral images of minerals. The library contains reflectance images of 130 samples, of 76 distinct minerals, with more than 3.9 million data points. In order to produce this dataset, various well-characterized mineral samples were scanned, using a SPECIM Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) camera, which captures wavelengths from 900 to 2500 nm. Minerals were selected to represent all the mineral classes and the most common mineral occurrences. For each sample, the following data are provided: (a) At least one hyperspectral image of the sample, consisting of 256 wavelengths between 900 and 2500 nm. The raw data, the high dynamic range (HDR) image, and the masked HDR image are provided for each scan (each of them in HDF5 format). (b) A text file describing the sample, providing supplementary information for the subsequent analysis (c) RGB images (JPEG files) and automated 3D reconstructions (Stanford Triangle PLY files). These data help the user to visualize and understand specific sample characteristics. 2D hyperspectral images were produced for each mineral, which consist of many different spectra with high diversity. The scans feature similar spectra than the ones in other available spectral libraries. An artificial neural network was trained to demonstrate the high quality of the dataset. This spectral library is mainly aimed at training machine learning algorithms, such as neural networks, but can be also used as validation data for other types of classification algorithms.

Project description:Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is recognized as a global mortality challenge, and digital strategies could contribute to increase the chance of survival. In this paper, we investigate if cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) quality measurement using smartphone video analysis in real-time is feasible for a range of conditions. With the use of a web-connected smartphone application which utilizes the smartphone camera, we detect inactivity and chest compressions and measure chest compression rate with real-time feedback to both the caller who performs chest compressions and over the web to the dispatcher who coaches the caller on chest compressions. The application estimates compression rate with 0.5 s update interval, time to first stable compression rate (TFSCR), active compression time (TC), hands-off time (TWC), average compression rate (ACR), and total number of compressions (NC). Four experiments were performed to test the accuracy of the calculated chest compression rate under different conditions, and a fifth experiment was done to test the accuracy of the CPR summary parameters TFSCR, TC, TWC, ACR, and NC. Average compression rate detection error was 2.7 compressions per minute (±5.0 cpm), the calculated chest compression rate was within ±10 cpm in 98% (±5.5) of the time, and the average error of the summary CPR parameters was 4.5% (±3.6). The results show that real-time chest compression quality measurement by smartphone camera in simulated cardiac arrest is feasible under the conditions tested.

Project description:The absolute radiometric accuracy of earth-observing camera is crucial for the applications of natural resources, environment, agriculture and other industries. To continue the progress in this filed, a lunar surface reflectance based radiometric calibration approach is given in this paper. We chose IIM, M3, SP lunar models as references and GF-4 VNIR camera as sensor under calibrating. The lunar calibration sites were MS-2 site, Apollo-16 site and CE-3 site. The equivalent reflectance models of lunar were retrieved by Multiplying and integrating with the spectral response function of VNIR camera. Absolute radiometric calibrations with the equivalent reflectance models of lunar were carried out for 520-590nm, 630-690nm and 770-890nm spectral bands. The ground-based validation experiments were conducted with low, medium and high reflectance targets. The calibration accuracy was evaluated by comparing the relative errors of derived radiance after radiometric calibration with the benchmarks of TOA radiance transferred by in-situ measured reflectance. Lunar-based calibration models, lab and on-orbit filed-based models were used to compare the relative errors between proposed method and traditional way. The results showed that using IIM lunar model had better radiometric accuracy than other models, and SP model had the similar performance with traditional on-orbit filed-based model. The results indicated that using lunar to calibrate the earth-observing camera had the capability to improve the radiometric calibration accuracy.

Project description:Low-cost phenotyping using proximal sensors is increasingly becoming popular in plant breeding. As these techniques generate a large amount of data, analysis pipelines that do not require expertise in computer programming can benefit a broader user base. In this work, a new online tool Specalyzer is presented that allows interactive analysis of the spectral reflectance data generated by proximal spectroradiometers. Specalyzer can be operated from any web browser allowing data uploading, analysis, interactive plots and exporting by point and click using a simple graphical user interface. Specalyzer is evaluated with case study data from a winter wheat fertilizer trial with two fertilizer treatments. Specalyzer can be accessed online at http://www.specalyzer.org.

Project description:The paper presents a diagnostic complex for plankton studies using the miniDHC (digital holographic camera). Its capabilities to study the rhythmic processes in plankton ecosystems were demonstrated using the natural testing in Lake Baikal in summer. The results of in situ measurements of plankton to detect the synchronization of collective biological rhythms with medium parameters are presented and interpreted. The most significant rhythms in terms of the correlation of their parameters with medium factors are identified. The study shows that the correlation with water temperature at the mooring site has the greatest significance and reliability. The results are verified with biodiversity data obtained by the traditional mesh method. The experience and results of the study can be used for the construction of a stationary station to monitor the ecological state of the water area through the digitalization of plankton behavior.

Project description:The knowledge of optical properties of biological cells is essential to interpret their interaction with light and to derive morphological information and parameters associated with cell function like the oxygen transport capacity of human red blood cells (RBCs). We present a method to determine the dependence between the refractive index (RI) of human RBCs and their intracellular hemoglobin (Hb) concentration from spectral extinction measurements of a cell suspension. The procedure is based on the analysis of the corresponding ensemble averaged extinction cross section [Formula: see text]. Thus far two complementary approaches have been taken to derive RIs of RBCs. The first one uses homogeneous macroscopic samples prepared by hemolysis for the destruction of the RBCs' membranes and subsequent centrifugation. A second approach is the determination of RIs of single intact cells by microscopic investigation. These techniques are limited to a few discrete wavelengths or a rather narrow wavelength range. In addition most of these techniques require additional information about the concentration dependence. In contrast, our approach yields the RI increment with Hb concentration of intact, reversibly isovolumetrically sphered, oxygenated RBCs over a wide wavelength range from 290 nm to 1100 nm from macroscopic measurements.
