ABSTRACT: Background
The environmental action scale is used to measure the degree of participation in collective environmental actions and has been shown to have adequate psychometric properties in developed countries. However, there are still no studies that have evaluated its performance in the Peruvian population.Methods
In this instrumental study, the environmental action scale (EAS) was translated, adapted, and validated. The EAS was administered to 352 university students between 18 and 35 years of age (Mage = 23.37, SD = 2.57) from different cities in Peru. A validity analysis was performed using two sources of evidence: content validity and internal structure, carrying out an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).Results
The structure of the scale has been organized into three oblique factors. The findings confirmed the reliability and validity of the three dimensions of the EAS.Conclusion
Therefore, this scale is considered a valid option for assessing environmental action.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Revised Indebtedness Scale (IS-R-C) in mainland China. A total of 1057 university students participated in this study using a two-wave whole-group sampling method. Sample 1, consisting of 537 participants, was used for item analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the Revised Indebtedness Scale (IS-R). Sample 2, comprising 520 participants, was used for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability analysis and gender invariance test. To assess criterion validity, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS), the Renqing Questionnaire (RQQ) and the Subjective Well-being Scale (SWBS) were administered. The results of the item analysis and EFA indicated that the IS-R-C comprises 12 items, delineated into two dimensions: pressure to repay and requirements for interaction. CFA further substantiated this two-factor model for the IS-R-C (χ2/df = 4.24, RMSEA = 0.079, GFI = 0.94, NFI = 0.91, IFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.91, CFI = 0.93 and SRMR = 0.062). The total score of the IS-R-C exhibited a significant positive correlation with both the SADS score (r = 0.34, p < 0.001) and the RQQ score (r = 0.34, p < 0.001). Additionally, it demonstrated a negative correlation with the SWBS score (r = -0.09, p < 0.05). The Cronbach's α coefficient for the overall IS-R-C score was 0.88, indicating high internal consistency. The scale demonstrated a split-half reliability coefficient of 0.73 and a composite reliability coefficient of 0.91. The reliability coefficients for the two subscales were 0.77 and 0.87. Furthermore, the IS-R-C exhibited measurement invariance across gender identities. The IS-R-C demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties, making it a suitable measure for studying indebtedness and related research in China.

Project description:This study investigated the reliability and factorial validity of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in the context of university students in Bangladesh. The research aimed to assess whether the original one-dimensional model or a model containing both somatic and cognitive-emotional factors is appropriate in the case of a sample of university students. A repeated cross-sectional survey design based on convenience sampling was used to collect data from 677 university students from both public and private universities. The factor structure of the PHQ-9 was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Measurement invariances were assessed across gender, type of university, level of education and victim of domestic violence. Its convergent validity was determined by investigating its correlations with Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety-Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS). Results showed excellent reliability of PHQ-9 as measured by both Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω. CFA suggested that a modified one-factor model where the error variances between item-3 ('sleeping difficulties') and item-6 ('feeling as a failure'), item-6 and item-9 ('suicidal thoughts'), item-4 ('feeling tired') and item-9, item-3 and item-9 were allowed to covary is appropriate for the sample. This model provided high values of comparative fit index (CFI), goodness of fit index (GFI), and Tucker Lewis Index (TLI), low value of standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) and a non-significant root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) as well as a high Factor Determinacy Score Coefficient. Correlation between PHQ-9 and GAD-7 was 0.751 and 0.934 between PHQ-9 and PHQ-ADS. Finally, the model is strictly invariant across gender and university type. Overall, the study provided support for modified unidimensional structure for PHQ-9 and showed high internal consistency along with good convergent validity.

Project description:Background: Medical students are affected by high levels of general anxiety disorder. However, few studies have specifically focused on the applicability of universal anxiety screening tools in this sample. This study was aimed to evaluate the psychometric property of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) among Chinese medical university students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,021 medical postgraduates from six polyclinic hospitals. Internal consistency and convergent validity of the GAD-7 were evaluated. Factor analyses were used to test the construct validity of the scale. An item response theory (IRT) framework was used to estimate the parameters of each item. Multi-group confirmatory analyses and differential item function analyses were used to evaluate the measurement equivalence of the GAD-7 across age, gender, educational status, and residence. Results: Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.93 and the intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.71 to 0.87. The GAD-7 summed score was significantly correlated with measures of depression symptoms, perceived stress, sleep disorders, and life satisfaction. Parallel analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported the one-factor structure of the GAD-7. Seven items showed appropriate discrimination and difficulty parameters. The GAD-7 showed good measurement equivalence across demographic characteristics. The total test information of the scale was 22.85, but the test information within the range of mild symptoms was relatively low. Conclusions: The GAD-7 has good reliability, validity, and measurement invariance among Chinese medical postgraduate students, but its measurement precision for mild anxiety symptoms is insufficient.

Project description:Aims: Depression is prevalent among university students worldwide, and the prevalence appears to be increasing. As an intermediate stage between being healthy and having depression, students with subthreshold depression could develop worsening depression or recover with intervention to prevent depression. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is a useful tool to assess subthreshold depression. The primary purpose of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of CES-D in Chinese university students. Secondly, we aimed to describe the prevalence of subthreshold depression among the student sample and examine its demographic correlates. Methods: A total of 2,068 university students participated in the study, and they were asked to respond to the Chinese CES-D, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). The factor structure was evaluated by conducting exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using a structural equation modeling approach. The reliability was assessed by calculating Cronbach's alpha, inter-item correlation, and item-total correlation coefficients. The prevalence of subthreshold depression was calculated and demographic correlates of gender, grade, and major were examined by multiple regression. Results: The final sample included 1,920 participants. The EFA results suggested extraction of three factors (somatic symptoms, negative affect, and anhedonia) that account for 52.68% of total variance. The CFA results suggested that the newly derived model with 14 items was the best fit for our data. Six items were removed from the original scale (item 9, 10, 13, 15, 17, and 19). The Cronbach's alpha of the 14-item CES-D was 0.87. The prevalence of subthreshold depression among university students reached 32.7% for the 20-item CES-D and 31% for the 14-item CES-D, although there was no significant difference of prevalence in gender, grade, and major. Conclusions: The CES-D has good reliability and validity for assessing subthreshold depression in Chinese university students.

Project description:Although evidence of mistreatment toward university students in the academic field has been reported for several years, its study in the context of the development of undergraduate research is still emerging. For this reason, it is necessary to have valid and reliable measurement instruments that allow assessing the magnitude of this problem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Thesis Advisor Abuse Scale (EMAT, for its acronym in Spanish) in Peruvian university students. A total of 753 university students (women = 57.4%) from the 3 regions of Peru participated. The internal structure was analyzed under an analytical-factorial approach, and the discrimination and difficulty characteristics of the items were evaluated from the perspective of item response theory (IRT). The findings showed evidence supporting the original three-dimensional structure. Furthermore, all the items on the EMAT have good discriminatory power. Additionally, the EMAT proved to be strictly invariant according to sex, and the reliability coefficients reached high magnitudes. It is concluded that the EMAT is an instrument that has adequate psychometric properties to be used as a measure of mistreatment by advisors in the thesis preparation processes in Peruvian university students.

Project description:Medical professionalism is a basic competency in medical education. This study aimed to adapt the Professionalism Assessment Scale, which is used to evaluate the professionalism attitudes of medical students, into Turkish and to assess its validity and reliability. First, the scale’s translation-back-translation was performed and piloted on 30 students. Then, the final scale was applied to medical students to ensure the scale’s validity. The Penn State University College of Medicine Professionalism Questionnaire was used for external validation to assess criterion validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed for structure validity. Test-retest, item correlations, split-half analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were evaluated to determine the scale’s reliability. SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 24.0 package programs were used for statistical analysis. The statistical significance level was accepted as P<0.05. The mean age of the participants was 21±2 years, and 50.5% (n = 166) were female. Three hundred thirty-five students were invited, and 329 participated in the study. The response rate was 98%. The mean total Professionalism Assessment Scale score was 96.36±12.04. The three-factor structure of the scale, “empathy and humanism,” “professional relationship and development,” and “responsibility,” was confirmed. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.94, and both the Spearman-Brown and Guttman split-half coefficients were 0.89. The three-factor structure of the scale, consisting of 22 items, explained 59.1% of the total variance. The intraclass correlation coefficient between test-retest measurements was 0.81. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a model suitable for the original version of the scale (χ2/sd = 2.814, RMSEA = 0.074). The Turkish version of the Professionalism Assessment Scale is a valid and reliable tool to determine the professionalism attitudes of medical students in Turkey.

Project description:ObjectiveThe current study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the revised general nutrition knowledge questionnaire (GNKQ-R) for adults.DesignThe eighty-eight-item English GNKQ-R was adapted into an eighty-six-item Arabic version. Four validation studies were conducted for internal (n 805) and external (n 106) reliability, construct validity between participants with (n 84) and without (n 88) nutrition background, convergent validity for associations between nutrition knowledge and demographic characteristics (n 750) and responsiveness to online nutrition information (n 55).SettingUnited Arab Emirates University in United Arab Emirates and Hashemite University in Jordan.ParticipantsUndergraduate students aged 18 years and above, enrolled in any programme at the two universities, were recruited.ResultsOverall, internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0·91) and external reliability (P = 0·350; intra-class correlation coefficient = 0·84) were high. Significantly higher GNKQ-R scores of students with (66·0 (10·6)) v. without (38·0 (10·7), P < 0·001; d = 2·6) nutrition background indicated high construct validity. Significantly higher GNKQ-R scores among females v. males, older and senior students v. younger and junior students and students in health discipline v. non-health discipline reflected good convergent validity. Significant differences in GNKQ-R scores with nutrition information (time 1 = 37·8 (10·5) and time 2 = 47·7 (9·1), P < 0·001; d = 1·0) indicated high responsiveness to nutrition intervention.ConclusionsThe Arabic GNKQ-R showed high reliability and validity in the young adult Arab population. Besides the reliability of the overall questionnaire, each section demonstrated adequate reliability. Further studies are warranted to establish the generalisability and applicability of the Arabic GNKQ-R in older adults and in different middle-eastern Arab countries.

Project description:BackgroundThe objective of this study is to reveal on the basis of the item response theory (IRT) the validity and reliability evidence for the data obtained from the scale prepared to determine the satisfaction with distance education in students studying in medical schools.MethodsThis is a quantitative study exploring IRT and measurement invariance evidence in developing a scale. The scale whose IRT evidence was explored was the Distance Education Satisfaction Scale (DESS). The data were obtained from 1332 medical school students who were studying at various universities. The data were analysed using the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multidimensional and unidimensional IRT, and measurement invariance.ResultsA 20-item construct with 3 sub-factors was found for DESS. This construct was unable to pass the iteration limit in the multidimensional IRT analysis. A unidimensional IRT was used assuming that the 3 sub-factors were locally independent.ConclusionsThe least informative items were item 23, 24 and 25 in Factor 1, item 3 in Factor 2, and items 13 and 18 in Factor 3. The most informative items of DESS were those that had adaptive, useful expressions that had meaningful content and were able to provide educator support, which are the properties emphasized in the literature with respect to satisfaction with distance education. A measurement invariance test made based on gender revealed that DESS satisfied measurement invariance by meeting the compliance indexes required for configural, metric, scalar and strict invariance as recommended in the literature. The results showed that it is possible to make comparisons on the basis of gender using DESS.

Project description:BackgroundA constantly changing and polluted environment can negatively affect children's health. Nursing education should enable the training of future nurses who are fully equipped to protect and improve children's health. In this respect, it is necessary to evaluate the knowledge and skills of nurse candidates. To examine the psychometric properties of the "Children's Environmental Health Knowledge (ChEHK-Q) and Skills (ChEHS-Q) Questionnaire" among Turkish-speaking nursing students.MethodsThis study employed a methodological method. An online survey was administered to 300 students in a nursing department in western Türkiye in 2021. Expert opinions were obtained for content and language validity. The validity of the scales was analysed via "Rasch measurement theory", and whether the necessary preconditions for the analysis (the item function difference, local independence, reliability, and unidimensionality) were met was checked. Then, the item difficulty, person ability, and response threshold value ranking data were obtained. SPSS 25.0 software, LISREL Vrs. 8.80 program and Winsteps 3.92.1 Version program were used.ResultsThe content validity indices of both scales were above 0.80. Only item 12 of the ChEHS-Q was removed because it did not provide cultural appropriateness. Both scales met the Rasch measurement theory assumption and had model fit. The ChEHK-Q infit values ranged from 0.13 to 1.07, and the outfit values ranged from 0.88 to 1.17. The ChEHS-Q infit values ranged from 0.82 to 1.19, and the outfit values ranged from 0.86 to 1.19.ConclusionsBoth questionnaires were found to be valid and reliable instruments in the Turkish language. Scales can provide ideas for shaping the nursing education curriculum in Türkiye. In this way, by determining which subjects are deficient, education programs can be arranged to eliminate these deficiencies. Nurses' awareness of environmental health is also important in improving public health. Graduating nurses can inform families by identifying environmental risks and contribute to the creation of healthy living conditions.In addition, it can be used in clinical practice (public health nursing, etc.) and national and international research (randomized controlled trials evaluating planned educational activities).Clinical trial numberNot applicable.
