Virtually all bacterial species synthesize (p)ppGpp (guanosine penta- or tetraphosphate), a pleiotropic regulator of the so-called stringent response, which controls many aspects of cellular physiology and metabolism. In Escherichia coli, (p)ppGpp levels are controlled by two homologous enzymes: the (p)ppGpp synthetase RelA and the bifunctional synthetase/hydrolase SpoT.
