Acaricidal and insecticidal activity of essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of three Mexican Bursera species.

ABSTRACT: In search of new sustainable biopesticides, we determined the phytochemical profiles, acaricidal and insecticidal properties of EOs distilled from the aerial parts of three Mexican Bursera species. Results were obtained by GC-MS analysis and three different bioassays, indicating that the EO of Bursera glabrifolia exhibited high relative abundancies of α-pinene, β-myrcene, and α-phellandrene, as well as promising pesticidal activity against Spodoptera littoralis larvae (LD_50,90 = 32.4, 107.2 µg/larva), and Musca domestica (LD_50,90 = 23.2, 103.2, and 13.5, 77.4 µg/female or male adult, respectively) and Tetranychus urticae adults (LD_50,90 = 7.4, 30.3 µg/cm²). The Bursera lancifolia and Bursera linanoe samples contained mainly D-limonene or linalyl acetate and linalool, respectively, and showed generally less potent pesticidal properties (S. littoralis larva, LD_50,90 = 45.4, 154.4 and 52.2, 158.7 µg/larva, respectively; female M. domestica adult, LD_50,90 = 69.2, 210.9 and 45.1, 243.8 µg/female adult, respectively; T. urticae adults, LD_50,90 = 20.7, 90.5 and 17.5, 71.4 µg/cm², respectively). However, the EO of B. linanoe exhibited an especially pronounced activity against male M. domestica adults (LD_50,90 = 10.6, 77.2 µg/male adult). Our findings prove the pesticidal potential of Mexican Bursera species in the context of integrated pest management (IPM) and highlight the importance of conducting further research to elucidate both the active principles and possibly existing synergistic effects.

Project description:Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and affect a great number of people worldwide. Essential oils, take effects through inhalation or topical application, are believed to enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Although clinical studies suggest that the use of essential oils may have therapeutic potential, evidence for the efficacy of essential oils in treating medical conditions remains poor, with a particular lack of studies employing rigorous analytical methods that capture its identifiable impact on human biology. Here, we report a comprehensive gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) based metabonomics study that reveals the aromas-induced metabolic changes and the anxiolytic effect of aromas in elevated plus maze (EPM) induced anxiety model rats. The significant alteration of metabolites in the EPM group was attenuated by aromas treatment, concurrent with the behavioral improvement with significantly increased open arms time and open arms entries. Brain tissue and urinary metabonomic analysis identified a number of altered metabolites in response to aromas intervention. These metabolic changes included the increased carbohydrates and lowered levels of neurotransmitters (tryptophan, serine, glycine, aspartate, tyrosine, cysteine, phenylalanine, hypotaurine, histidine, and asparagine), amino acids, and fatty acids in the brain. Elevated aspartate, carbohydrates (sucrose, maltose, fructose, and glucose), nucleosides and organic acids such as lactate and pyruvate were also observed in the urine. The EPM induced metabolic differences observed in urine or brain tissue was significantly reduced after 10 days of aroma inhalation, as noted with the loss of statistical significance on many of the metabolites in the aroma-EPM group. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that the metabonomics approach can capture the subtle metabolic changes resulting from exposure to essential oils and provide the basis for pinpointing affected pathways in anxiety-related behavior, which will lead to an improved mechanistic understanding of anxiolytic effect of essential oils.

Project description:The spotted wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is an invasive polyphagous pest of soft-skinned fruit that has started to threaten small fruit production in Europe since 2008. High reproductive capacity, short generation time, and difficulties in visualizing early damage contribute to its rapid spread. Currently, the control strategy against D. suzukii mostly relies on treatment with synthetic insecticides. Keeping in mind that this pest causes the greatest damage during the harvesting period, control using chemicals is not recommended due to the increased risk of high pesticide residue levels in the fruit. With the aim of reducing the use of insecticides, there is a need for developing an environmentally safer way of control. Alternative solutions could rely on the use of essential oils (EOs), which can be used in conventional and organic production systems. Four essential oils, geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), dill (Anethum graveolens), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and bergamot (Citrus bergamia), were assessed for their insecticidal effects using four different tests (contact toxicity, fumigant-contact toxicity, repellent effect, and multiple-choice tests). The EOs applied were dissolved in acetone at three different concentrations. The most promising one was the geranium essential oil, which had the best effect in all conducted tests, even at the lowest applied concentration. Geranium oil caused very high mortality (95%), even at the lowest concentration applied, after 24 h in the fumigant-contact test, and it caused a mortality of over 85% in the contact test. It was also noticed that geranium demonstrated a deterrent effect by repelling females from laying eggs for four days after at the lowest applied concentration. Scots pine and dill EOs have moderate to strong effects in most tests. The mortality of 100% was achieved for the highest applied concentration in the fumigant-contact and contact tests. Bergamot EO did not have any significant insecticidal activity. Geranium, Scots pine, and dill have great potential to be used as an environmentally friendly way of controlling D. suzukii as they exhibit deterrent, repellent, and insecticidal effects.
