Influence of Anatomy, Microstructure, and Composition of Natural Fibers on the Performance of Thermal Insulation Panels.

ABSTRACT: The growing interest in environmentally friendly materials is leading to a re-evaluation of natural fibers for industrial applications in order to meet sustainability and low-cost objectives, especially for thermal insulation of buildings. This paper deals with the chemical and physical characterization of fibers extracted from seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) and alfa grass (Stipa tenacissima) for a possible substitution of synthetic materials for thermal insulation. Hemp (Cannabis sativa), a fiber broadly used, was also studied for comparison. The parameters characterized include porosity, thermal degradation, elemental composition, skeletal and particle density of the fibers as well as investigation of the thermal conductivity of fiber-based panels.
