Unveiling the existence and ecological hazards of trace organic pollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents across China.

ABSTRACT: The presence of trace organic pollutants in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) poses considerable risks to aquatic organisms and human health. A large-scale survey of 302 trace organic pollutants in the effluent of 46 Chinese WWTPs was conducted to gain an improved understanding of their occurrence and ecological risks. The survey data showed that 216 compounds in 11 chemical classes had been detected in effluents. The sum concentrations of the trace contaminants in effluent ranged from 1,392 ng/L to 35,453 ng/L, with the maximum concentration of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) recorded as the highest (30,573 ng/L), which was markedly less than the reported 185,000 ng/L for the 38 American WWTPs. The concentration of bisphenol analogs (BPs) was up to 4,422 ng/L, significantly higher than those reported in France, Germany, Japan, Korea, and the U.S. PFASs and BPs were the major pollutants, accounting for 59% of the total pollution. Additionally, a total of 119 contaminants were found to have ecological risks (RQ > 0.01). Among these, 23 contaminants (RQ > 1.0) warrant higher attention and should be prioritized for removal. This study lists valuable information for controlling contaminants with higher priority in WWTP effluent in China.

Project description:Continuous exposure to low concentrations of antibiotics (sub-minimal inhibitory concentration: sub-MIC) is thought to lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environmental microbiota. However, the relationship between antibiotic exposure and resistance selection in environmental bacterial communities is still poorly understood and unproven. Therefore, we measured the concentration of twenty antibiotics, resistome quality, and analyzed the taxonomic composition of microorganisms in river biofilms collected upstream (UPS) and downstream (DWS) (at the point of discharge) from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Poitiers (France). The results of statistical analysis showed that the antibiotic content, resistome, and microbiome composition in biofilms collected UPS were statistically different from that collected DWS. According to Procrustes analysis, microbial community composition and antibiotics content may be determinants of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) composition in samples collected DWS. However, network analysis showed that the occurrence and concentration of antibiotics measured in biofilms did not correlate with the occurrence and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements. In addition, network analysis suggested patterns of co-occurrence between several ARGs and three classes of bacteria/algae: Bacteroidetes incertae sedis, Cyanobacteria/Chloroplast, and Nitrospira, in biofilm collected UPS. The absence of a direct effect of antibiotics on the selection of resistance genes in the collected samples suggests that the emergence of antibiotic resistance is probably not only due to the presence of antibiotics but is a more complex process involving the cumulative effect of the interaction between the bacterial communities (biotic) and the abiotic matrix. Nevertheless, this study confirms that WWTP is an important reservoir of various ARGs, and additional efforts and legislation with clearly defined concentration limits for antibiotics and resistance determinants in WWTP effluents are needed to prevent their spread and persistence in the environment.

Project description:To better understand the influence of land use and meteorological parameters on air pollutants, we deployed passive air samplers in 15 regions with different land use in eastern Austria. The samplers consisted of polyurethane PUF and polyester PEF filter matrices, which were analyzed for 566 substances by gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry. In a previous article, we highlighted a widespread contamination of ambient air with pesticides that depends on the surrounding land use and meteorological parameters. Here we report that, in addition to agricultural pesticides, eight other substances were frequently detected in ambient air: Nitrapyrin, a nitrification inhibitor used to increase nitrogen use efficiency of fertilizers and banned in Austria since 1993; biocides against insects (DEET and transfluthrin) used mainly outside agriculture; piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a synergist mixed into pesticide formulations; and four industrially used polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), long banned worldwide. Concentrations of the detected substances were positively related to air temperature, but only slightly related to agricultural land use in the sampler's vicinity. The city center showed the highest concentrations of biocides, PCBs and PBO, but also medium concentrations of nitrapyrin. Four sites had no air contamination with these substances; including two national parks dominated by grassland or forest, but also two sites with mixed land use. The potential human toxicity of the detected substances based on globally harmonized hazard classifications was high: seven substances had specific organ toxicity, six were cancerogenic, and two were acutely toxic; however, several substances had incomplete information of hazard profiles. Moreover, all substances were acutely and chronically toxic to aquatic life. We recommend that substances of different origins be included in the air pollution monitoring portfolio to comprehensively assess the potential hazards to humans and the environment.
