Lewis acid catalysed polymerisation of cyclopentenone.

ABSTRACT: A modest structural change of a β-diketiminate-supported aluminium complex leads to dramatic differences in the reactivity towards cyclopentenone. While the bulkier complex efficiently executes Diels Alder transformations the smaller analogue performs unique polymerisation of this substrate. This observation appears to be unprecedented in the chemistry of Lewis acids and cyclic dienophiles as it represents a unique way to polymerise a functionalised olefin.

Project description:An efficient and mild reaction protocol for the decarbonylation of isocyanates has been developed using catalytic amounts of Lewis acidic boranes. The electronic nature (electron withdrawing, electron neutral, and electron donating) and the position of the substituents (ortho/meta/para) bound to isocyanate controls the chain length and composition of the products formed in the reaction. Detailed DFT studies were undertaken to account for the formation of the mono/di-carboxamidation products and benzoxazolone compounds.

Origin of enantioselectivity reversal in Lewis acid-catalysed Michael additions relying on the same chiral source.

Project description:Enantiodivergence is an important concept in asymmetric catalysis that enables access to both enantiomers of a product relying on the same chiral source as reagent. This strategy is particularly appealing as an alternate approach when only one enantiomer of the required chiral ligand is readily accessible but both enantiomers of the product are desired. Despite the potential significance, general catalytic methods to effectively reverse enantioselectivity by changing an achiral reaction parameter remain underdeveloped. Herein we report our studies focused on elucidating the origin of metal-controlled enantioselectivity reversal in Lewis acid-catalysed Michael additions. Rigorous experimental and computational investigations reveal that specific Lewis and Brønsted acid interactions between the substrate and ligand change depending on the ionic radius of the metal catalyst, and are key factors responsible for the observed enantiodivergence. This holds potential to further our understanding of and facilitate the design of future enantiodivergent transformations.

Synthesis of water-soluble surfactants using catalysed condensation polymerisation in green reaction media.

Project description:Sustainable and biobased surfactants are required for a wide range of everyday applications. Key drivers are cost, activity and efficiency of production. Polycondensation is an excellent route to build surfactant chains from bio-sourced monomers, but this typically requires high processing temperatures (≥200 °C) to remove the condensate and to lower viscosity of the polymer melt. In addition, high temperatures also increase the degree of branching and cause discolouration through the degradation of sensitive co-initiators and monomers. Here we report the synthesis of novel surface-active polymers from temperature sensitive renewable building blocks such as dicarboxylic acids, polyols (d-sorbitol) and fatty acids. We demonstrate that the products have the potential to be key components in renewable surfactant design, but only if the syntheses are optimised to ensure linear chains with hydrophilic character. The choice of catalyst is key to this control and we have assessed three different approaches. Additionally, we also demonstrate that use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) can dramatically improve conversion by reducing reaction viscosity, lowering reaction temperature, and driving condensate removal. We also evaluate the performance of the new biobased surfactants, focussing upon surface tension, and critical micelle concentration.

Chiral Lewis Base-Catalysed Asymmetric Syntheses of Benzo-fused ϵ-Lactones.

Project description:We herein report a two-step protocol for the asymmetric synthesis of novel chiral benzofused ϵ-lactones starting from O-protected hydroxymethyl-para-quinone methides and activated aryl esters. By using chiral isothiourea Lewis base catalysts a broad variety of differently substituted products could be obtained in yields of around 50 % over both steps with high levels of enantioselectivities, albeit low diastereoselectivities only.

Lewis Base Activation of Lewis Acid: A Detailed Bond Analysis.

Project description:The effect of a Lewis base (LB) on the nucleophilic attack on chalcogeniranium (chalcogen = sulfur and selenium) cations, the so-called LB activation of a Lewis acid, has been studied coupling natural orbital for chemical valence decomposition of the orbital interaction energy with charge displacement analysis. This methodology provides a detailed and accurate description of all the interactions (LB···chalcogen, chalcogen···olefin and olefin···ammonia) present in the system and leads to a deeper understanding of how they influence each other at all stages of the reaction: reactant complex, transition state, and product complex. In particular, the bond between the chalcogen and the olefin has been decomposed in terms of σ donation/π back-donation and the bond components quantified. This allowed determination of a linear relationship between the activation barrier of the nucleophilic attack and the net amount of charge donated by the olefin to the chalcogen.

Trifluoromethylthiolation of Arenes Using Lewis Acid and Lewis Base Dual Catalysis.

Project description:Incorporation of the highly lipophilic trifluoromethanesulfenyl group into bioactive molecules facilitates transport through lipid membranes, and thus, CF3S-containing compounds are important for drug discovery. Although reagents and procedures have been reported for arene trifluoromethylthiolation, methods are still required that are applicable to a diverse substrate scope and can be performed under mild conditions. Here, we describe a rapid and efficient approach for the trifluoromethylthiolation of arenes by catalytic activation of N-trifluoromethylthiosaccharin using a combination of iron(III) chloride and diphenyl selenide. This dual catalytic process allowed regioselective functionalization of a wide range of arenes and N-heterocycles under mild conditions and was used for the trifluoromethylthiolation of bioactive compounds such as tyrosine and estradiol.

A Lewis acid-promoted Pinner reaction.

Project description:Carbonitriles and alcohols react in a Lewis acid-promoted Pinner reaction to carboxylic esters. Best results are obtained with two equivalents of trimethylsilyl triflate as Lewis acid. Good yields are achieved with primary alcohols and aliphatic or benzylic carbonitriles, but the straightforward synthesis of acrylates and benzoates starting with acrylonitrile and benzonitrile, respectively, is similarly possible. Phenols are not acylated under these reaction conditions. The method has been used for the first total synthesis of the natural product monaspilosin. In the reaction of benzyl alcohols variable amounts of amides are formed in a Ritter-type side reaction.

Lewis Acid Promoted Dearomatization of Naphthols.

Project description:Two-step dearomative functionalization of naphthols promoted by Lewis acids and copper(I) catalysis was developed. Initially, Lewis acid complexation inverted the electronic properties of the ring and established an equilibrium with the dearomatized counterpart. Subsequent trapping of the dearomatized intermediate with organometallics as well as organophosphines was demonstrated and provided the corresponding dearomatized products.

Bronsted Acid-Catalysed Dehydrative Substitution Reactions of Alcohols.

Project description:The direct, catalytic dehydrative substitution of alcohols is a challenging, yet highly desirable process in the development of more sustainable approaches to organic chemistry. This review outlines recent advances in Brønsted acid-catalysed dehydrative substitution reactions for C-C, C-O, C-N and C-S bond formation. The wide range of processes that are now accessible using simple alcohols as the formal electrophile are highlighted, while current limitations and therefore possible future directions for research are also discussed.
