Thirst plays a vital role in the regulation of body fluid homeostasis and if deregulated can be life-threatening. Interoceptive neurons in the subfornical organ (SFO) are intrinsically osmosensitive and their activation by hyperosmolarity is necessary and sufficient for generating thirst.
