Project description:CO2, as a cheap and abundant renewable C1 resource, can be used to synthesize high value-added chemicals. In this paper, a series of bifunctional metallic niobium complexes were synthesized and their structures were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. All of these complexes have been proved to be efficient catalysts for the coupling reaction of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates under solvent- and co-catalyst-free conditions. By using CO2 and propylene oxide as a model reaction, the optimal reaction conditions were systematically screened as: 100 °C, 1 MPa, 2 h, ratio of catalyst to alkylene oxide 1:100. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the bifunctional niobium catalysts can efficiently catalyze the coupling reaction with high yield and excellent selectivity (maximum yield of >99% at high pressure and 96.8% at atmospheric pressure). Moreover, this series of catalysts can also catalyze the coupling reaction at atmospheric pressure and most of them showed high conversion of epoxide. The catalysts have good substrate suitability and are also applicable to a variety of epoxides including diepoxides and good catalytic performances were achieved for producing the corresponding cyclic carbonates in most cases. Furthermore, the catalysts can be easily recovered by simple filtration and reused for at least five times without obvious loss of catalytic activity and selectivity. Kinetic studies were carried out preliminarily for the bifunctional niobium complexes with different halogen ions (3a(Cl-), 3b(Br-), 3c(I-)) and the formation activation energies (Ea) of cyclic carbonates were obtained. The order of apparent activation energy Ea is 3a (96.2 kJ/mol) > 3b (68.2 kJ/mol) > 3c (37.4 kJ/mol). Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

Project description:Chromium and aluminum complexes bearing salalen ligands were explored as catalysts for the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of succinic (SA), maleic (MA), and phthalic (PA) anhydrides with several epoxides: cyclohexene oxide (CHO), propylene oxide (PO), and limonene oxide (LO). Their behavior was compared with that of traditional salen chromium complexes. A completely alternating enchainment of monomers to provide pure polyesters was achieved with all the catalysts when used in combination with 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as the cocatalyst. Poly(propylene maleate-block-polyglycolide), a diblock polyester with a precise composition, was obtained by switch catalysis, in which the same catalyst was able to combine the ROCOP of propylene oxide and maleic anhydride with the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of glycolide (GA) through a one-pot procedure, starting from an initial mixture of the three different monomers.

Project description:A series of bifunctional Schiff base metal catalysts (Zn-NPClR, Zn-NPXH, and M-NPClH) with two quaternary ammonium groups were prepared for carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide coupling reactions. The effects of the reaction variables on the catalytic activity were systematically investigated, and the optimal reaction conditions (120 °C, 1 MPa CO2, 3 h) were screened. The performances of different metal-centered catalysts were evaluated, and Co-NPClH showed excellent activity. This kind of bifunctional catalyst has a wide range of substrate applicability, excellent stability, and can be reused for more than five runs. A relatively high TOF could reach up to 1416 h-1 with Zn-NPClH as catalyst by adjusting reaction factors. In addition, the kinetic study of the coupling reaction catalyzed by three catalysts (Zn, Co, and Ni) was carried out to obtain the activation energy (Ea) for the formation of cyclic carbonates. Finally, a possible mechanism for this cyclization reaction was proposed.

Project description:The effect of ligand structure on the catalytic activity of amine-bis(phenolate) chromium(III) complexes in the ring-opening copolymerization of phthalic anhydride and a series epoxides was studied. Eight complexes differing in the donor-pendant group (R1) and substituents (R2) in phenolate units were examined as catalysts of the model reaction between phthalic anhydride and cyclohexane oxide in toluene. They were used individually or as a part of the binary catalytic systems with nucleophilic co-catalysts. The co-catalyst was selected from the following organic bases: PPh3, DMAP, 1-butylimidazole, or DBU. The binary catalytic systems turned out to be more active than the complexes used individually, and DMAP proved to be the best choice as a co-catalyst. When the molar ratio of [PA]:[epoxide]:[Cr]:[DMAP] = 250:250:1:1 was applied, the most active complex (R1-X = CH2NMe2, R2 = F) allowed to copolymerize phthalic anhydride with differently substituted epoxides (cyclohexene oxide, 4-vinylcyclohexene oxide, styrene oxide, phenyl glycidyl ether, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, and epichlorohydrin) within 240 min at 110 °C. The resulting polyesters were characterized by Mn up to 20.6 kg mol-1 and narrow dispersity, and they did not contain polyether units.

Project description:We report silicon carbide (SiC) based epoxidation catalysts constituted of a silicon carbide core and a silica/titania (SiO2/TiO2) shell. The catalysts were obtained via surface modification of SiC microparticles and were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclohexene using tert-butyl hydroperoxide or cumyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. Conversions up to 83% and selectivities of more than 90% were obtained.

Project description:A bifunctional imidazolium functionalized zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF), (I-)Meim-UiO-66 (2), was successfully prepared from the imidazole-containing Zr-MOF Im-UiO-66 (1) by a post-synthetic modification (PSM) method. It was found that the crystal size and pore features of the imidazole-containing 1 could be tuned at the nanoscale. The bifunctional MOF 2, containing Brønsted acid sites and iodide ions, was shown to be an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides, without the use of any co-catalyst, at ambient pressure. The solvent-free synthesis of the cyclic carbonate from CO2 and an epoxide was monitored by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and an acid/base synergistic catalysis mechanism was proposed. We hope that our strategy provides an effective approach for the introduction of functional N-heterocyclic groups into MOFs for potential applications.

Project description:The [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of 1,5-bisallenes and alkynes under the catalysis of Rh(I) with hemilabile thioether-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands is described. This protocol effectively provides an entry to different trans-5,6-fused bicyclic systems with two exocyclic double bonds in the cyclohexene ring. The process is totally chemoselective with the two internal double bonds of the 1,5-bisallenes being involved in the cycloaddition. The complete mechanism of this transformation as well as the preference for the trans-fusion over the cis-fusion has been rationalized by density functional theory calculations. The reaction follows a typical [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition mechanism. The oxidative addition takes place between the alkyne and one of the allenes and it is when the second allene is inserted into the rhodacyclopentene that the trans-fusion is generated. Remarkably, the hemilabile character of the sulfur atom in the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand modulates the electron density in key intermediates, facilitating the overall transformation.

Project description:Seaweed powder has been found to act as an effective catalyst for the fixation of CO₂ into epoxides to generate cyclic carbonates under solvent free conditions. Model background reactions were performed using metal halides and amino acids typically found in common seaweeds which showed potassium iodide (KI) to be the most active. The efficacy of the seaweed catalysts kelp (Laminaria digitata) and dulse (Palmaria palmata) was probed based on particle size, showing that kelp possessed greater catalytic ability, achieving a maximum conversion and selectivity of 63.7% to styrene carbonate using a kelp loading of 80% by weight with respect to epoxide, 40 bar of CO₂, 120 °C for 3 h. Maximizing selectivity was difficult due to the generation of diol side product from residual H₂O found in kelp, along with a chlorinated by-product thought to form due to a high quantity of chloride salts in the seaweeds. Data showed there was loss of organic matter upon use of the kelp catalyst, likely due to the breakdown of organic compounds and their subsequent removal during product extraction. This was highlighted as the likely cause of loss of catalytic activity upon reuse of the Kelp catalyst.

Project description:We aimed to develop new effective catalysts for the synthesis of propylene carbonate from propylene oxide and carbon dioxide. A kind of Mx+LClx coordination complex was fabricated based on the chelating tridentate ligand 2,6-bis[1-(phenylimino)ethyl] pyridine (L). The obtained products were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was found that the catalytic activity of the complexes with different metal ions, the same ligand differed and co-catalyst, where the order of greatest to least catalytic activity was 2 > 3 > 1. The catalytic system composed of complex 2 and DMAP proved to have the better catalytic performance. The yields for complex 2 systems was 86.7% under the reaction conditions of 100 °C, 2.5 MPa, and 4 h. The TOF was 1026 h-¹ under the reaction conditions of 200 °C, 2.5 MPa, and 1 h. We also explored the influence of time, pressure, temperature, and reaction substrate concentration on the catalytic reactions. A hypothetical catalytic reaction mechanism is proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the catalytic reaction results.

Project description:The paradigm of supramolecular chemistry relies on the delicate balance of noncovalent forces. Here we present a systematic approach for controlling the structural versatility of halide salts by the nature of hydrogen bonding interactions. We synthesized halide salts with hydroxy-functionalized pyridinium cations [HOCn Py]+ (n=2, 3, 4) and chloride, bromide and iodide anions, which are typically used as precursor material for synthesizing ionic liquids by anion metathesis reaction. The X-ray structures of these omnium halides show two types of hydrogen bonding: 'intra-ionic' H-bonds, wherein the anion interacts with the hydroxy group and the positively charged ring at the same cation, and 'inter-ionic' H-bonds, wherein the anion also interacts with the hydroxy group and the ring system but of different cations. We show that hydrogen bonding is controllable by the length of the hydroxyalkyl chain and the interaction strength of the anion. Some molten halide salts exhibit a third type of hydrogen bonding. IR spectra reveal elusive H-bonds between the OH groups of cations, showing interaction between ions of like charge. They are formed despite the repulsive interaction between the like-charged ions and compete with the favored cation-anion H-bonds. All types of H-bonding are analyzed by quantum chemical methods and the natural bond orbital approach, emphasizing the importance of charge transfer in these interactions. For simple omnium salts, we evidenced three distinct types of hydrogen bonds: Three in one!
