Well-Separated Photoinduced Charge Carriers on Hydrogen Production Using NiS₂/TiO₂ Nanocomposites.

ABSTRACT: Photocatalytic hydrogen production is a sustainable and greenhouse-gas-free method that requires an efficient and abundant photocatalyst, which minimizes energy consumption. Currently, interests in transition metal chalcogenide materials have been utilized in different applications due to their quantum confinement effect and low band gaps. In this study, different wt % of NiS₂-embedded TiO₂ nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and utilized for photocatalytic hydrogen production under extended solar irradiation. Among the materials studied, the highest amount (4.185 mmol g^-1) of hydrogen production was observed with 15 wt % of the NiS₂/TiO₂ nanocomposite. The highest photocatalytic activity may be due to the well separation of photoinduced charge carriers on the catalyst, which was confirmed by the electrochemical studies. Thus, we believe that these photocatalysts are promising candidates for future applications.

Project description:Covalently linked photosensitizer-polyoxometalate (PS-POM) dyads are promising molecular systems for light-induced energy conversion processes, such as "solar" hydrogen generation. To date, very little is known of their fundamental photophysical properties which affect the catalytic reactivity and stability of the systems. PS-POM dyads often feature short-lived photoinduced charge-separated states, and the lifetimes of these states are considered crucial for the function of PS-POM dyads in molecular photocatalysis. Hence, strategies have been developed to extend the lifetimes of the photoinduced charge-separated states, either by tuning the PS photophysics or by tuning the POM redox properties. Recently, some of us reported PS-POM dyads based on cyclometalated IrIII complexes covalently linked to Anderson-type polyoxometalate. Distinct hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of the dyads was observed, which was tuned by varying the central metal ion M of the POMM (M=Mn3+ , Co3+ , Fe3+ ). In this manuscript, the photoinduced electron-transfer processes in the three Ir-POMM dyads are investigated to rationalize the underlying reasons for the differences in HER activity observed. We report that upon excitation of the IrIII complex, ultrafast (sub-ps) charge separation occurs, leading to different amounts of the charge-separated states (Ir.+ -POMM .- ) generated in the different dyads. However, in all dyads studied, the resulting Ir.+ -POMM .- species are short-lived (sub-ns) when compared to reference electron acceptors (e.g. porphyrins or fullerenes) reported in the literature. The reductive quenching of Ir.+ -POMM .- by a sacrificial donor, triethyl amine (1 m), to generate the intermediate Ir-POMM .- is estimated to be very efficient (70-80 %) for all dyads studied. Based on this analyses, we conclude that the yield instead of the lifetime of the Ir.+ -POMM .- charge-separated state determines the catalytic capacity of the dyads investigated. This new feature in the PS-POM photophysics could lead to new design criteria for the development of novel PS-POM dyads.

Project description:Electro- and photochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is the quintessence of modern-day sustainable research. We report our studies on the electro- and photoinduced interfacial charge transfer occurring in a nanocrystalline mesoporous TiO2 film and two TiO2/iron porphyrin hybrid films (meso-aryl- and β-pyrrole-substituted porphyrins, respectively) under CO2R conditions. We used transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) to demonstrate that, under 355 nm laser excitation and an applied voltage bias (0 to -0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl), the TiO2 film exhibited a diminution in the transient absorption (at -0.5 V by 35%), as well as a reduction of the lifetime of the photogenerated electrons (at -0.5 V by 50%) when the experiments were conducted under a CO2 atmosphere changing from inert N2. The TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed faster charge recombination kinetics, featuring 100-fold faster transient signal decays than that of the TiO2 film. The electro-, photo-, and photoelectrochemical CO2R performance of the TiO2 and TiO2/iron porphyrin films are evaluated within the bias range of -0.5 to -1.8 V vs Ag/AgCl. The bare TiO2 film produced CO and CH4 as well as H2, depending on the applied voltage bias. In contrast, the TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed the exclusive formation of CO (100% selectivity) under identical conditions. During the CO2R, a gain in the overpotential values is obtained under light irradiation conditions. This finding was indicative of a direct transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the film to absorbed CO2 molecules and an observed decrease in the decay of the TAS signals. In the TiO2/iron porphyrin films, we identified the interfacial charge recombination processes between the oxidized iron porphyrin and the electrons of the TiO2 conduction band. These competitive processes are considered to be responsible for the diminution of direct charge transfer between the film and the adsorbed CO2 molecules, explaining the moderate performances of the hybrid films for the CO2R.
