Association between vitamin D and endometriosis among American women: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

ABSTRACT: Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease associated with inflammation. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anti-oxidative, and immunomodulatory effects. Whether vitamin D levels are correlated with endometriosis is a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to examine the association between endometriosis and serum vitamin D levels. From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study examined the cross-sectional data of American women aged 20-54 years from 2001 to 2006. After adjusting for covariates, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess correlations. A total of 3,232 women were included in this study. The multiple linear regression model demonstrated a negative correlation between the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) concentration and the risk of endometriosis after controlling for all confounding variables. The odds ratio was 0.73 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.54-0.97 in the adequate vitamin D level group compared with the insufficient vitamin D level group. Our results showed that endometriosis was inversely correlated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels. Further research is needed to establish a causal relationship and determine the potential benefits of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels for endometriosis prevention.

Project description:BackgroundThe relationship between serum levels of carotenoids and endometriosis remains largely unknown. The aim of this study is to assess the association between serum levels of major carotenoids (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and trans-lycopene) and the risk of endometriosis in US women.MethodsThe data were obtained from the 2001-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), which included a total of 3,636 women aged 20 to 54. Serum levels of α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and trans-lycopene were measured using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array detection. Endometriosis was defined as self-report. Weighted multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the associations of the serum levels of the major carotenoids with endometriosis risk. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) was employed to assess the possibility of nonlinear associations. Finally, subgroup analyses were utilized to estimate the influence of several covariates on the associations.ResultsWeighted multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that, after adjusting for all covariates taken into account, there was a significant association between serum lutein/zeaxanthin levels and reduced risk of endometriosis (Quartile 3 vs. Quartile 1: odds ratio [OR] = 0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.42-0.90; Quartile 4 vs. Quartile 1: OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.36-0.81, P for trend = 0.001). However, no significant associations of serum levels of other carotenoids with endometriosis were found in multivariable-adjusted models that included all covariates. RCS analysis did not reveal any non-linear relationships. Subgroup analyses indicated that the inverse association between serum lutein/zeaxanthin levels and reduced endometriosis risk was significant only in individuals under 40 years of age, in both White and non-White populations, in smokers, and among those who had ever used oral contraceptives.ConclusionSerum lutein/zeaxanthin levels may offer protective effects against endometriosis in specific subpopulations. Further prospective research is necessary to validate these findings.

Project description:ObjectiveOversampling of Asian American individuals in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) provides a unique opportunity to assess the population-level cardiovascular health (CVH) in the fastest-growing racial group in the US.MethodsThe Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and its components were calculated in self-reported Asian American individuals ≥20 years of age and free of cardiovascular disease in the NHANES cycles from 2011-March 2020. Multivariable adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used for analysis.ResultsAmong 2,059 Asian American individuals, the weighted mean LE8 score was 69.1 (0.4) with US-born [69.0 (0.8)] and foreign-born individuals [69.1 (0.4)] having similar CVH. From 2011 to March 2020, CVH in the overall population [69.7 (0.8) to 68.1 (0.8); Ptrend: 0.009] and foreign-born individuals [69.7 (0.8) to 67.7 (0.8); Ptrend: 0.005] declined. Decreasing trends were noted in the body mass index score irrespective of stratification and in the blood pressure scores in the overall population and foreign-born Asian American individuals. Compared with US-born individuals, the odds of ideal levels of smoking [ORadj:<5 years: 2.23 (95%CI: 1.45-3.44); 5-15 years: 1.97 (95%CI: 1.27-3.05); 15-30 years: 1.61 (95%CI: 1.11-2.34); ≥30 years: 1.69(95%CI:1.20-2.36)] and diet [ORadj: <5 years: 1.87 (95%CI: 1.26-2.79); 5-15 years: 2.00 (95%CI: 1.38-2.89); 15-30 years: 1.74 (95%CI: 1.14-2.68)] were higher in foreign-born individuals. Foreign-born individuals had lower odds of ideal physical activity levels [ORadj: 5-15 years: 0.55 (95%CI: 0.39-0.79); 15-30 years: 0.68 (95%CI: 0.49-0.95)] and ideal cholesterol levels [ORadj: 5-15 years: 0.59 (95%CI: 0.42-0.82); 15-30 years: 0.54 (95%CI :0.38-0.76); ≥30 years: 0.52 (95%CI: 0.38-0.76)].ConclusionThe CVH in Asian American individuals declined from 2011 to March 2020. The odds of ideal CVH decreased with increasing duration of stay in the US, with foreign-born individuals residing in the US for ≥30 years having ∼28% lower odds of ideal CVH compared with US-born individuals.

Project description:BackgroundBisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF) are widely used in various consumer products. They are environmental contaminants with estrogenic properties that have been linked to various health outcomes. Understanding their impact on body composition is crucial for identifying potential health risks and developing preventive strategies. However, most current studies have only focused on their relationship with BMI.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the association between urinary levels of BPA, BPS, and BPF and body composition, including BMI, lean mass, and fat mass, in a large population-based sample.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2016. Body composition data were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which provided precise measurements of lean mass, fat mass, and other indicators. We used multivariate linear regression models to estimate the associations, adjusting for potential confounders such as age, gender, race, socioeconomic factors, and lifestyle variables.ResultsThe results revealed significant associations between bisphenol exposure and body composition. After adjusting for covariates, BPS showed a positive association with BMI, with quartiles 3 and 4 having 0.91 (95% CI 0.34-1.48) and 1.15 (95% CI 0.55-1.74) higher BMI, respectively, compared with quartile 1 (P<.001). BPA was negatively associated with total lean mass (TLM) and appendicular lean mass, with quartiles 2, 3, and 4 having -7.85 (95% CI -11.44 to -4.25), -12.33 (95% CI -16.12 to -8.54), and -11.08 (95% CI -15.16 to -7.01) lower TLM, respectively, compared with quartile 1 (P<.001). BPS was negatively associated with TLM, with quartiles 3 (β=-10.53, 95% CI -16.98 to -4.08) and 4 (β=-11.14, 95% CI -17.83 to -4.45) having significantly lower TLM (P=.005). Both BPA and BPS showed a positive dose-response relationship with trunk fat (BPA: P=.002; BPS: P<.001) and total fat (BPA: P<.001; BPS: P=.01). No significant association was found between BPF and any body composition parameter.ConclusionsThis large-sample study highlights the associations between urinary levels of BPA and BPS and alterations in body composition, including changes in lean mass, fat mass, and regional fat distribution. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the potential health risks associated with bisphenol exposure and emphasize the need for targeted interventions to mitigate adverse effects on body composition.
