Computational fluid dynamics dataset of secondary air modification in a circulating fluidized bed boiler.

ABSTRACT: Computer simulation has been proven to provide a good understanding of engineering phenomenon. This work presents numerical simulation results on secondary air jet penetration into a dense phase of a three-dimensional fluidized bed at a commercial scale. Initial model as a reference and four modified models which are called as case A, B, C, and D were created by modifying the angle of secondary air. Evaluation of combustion process is based on mass fraction distribution of H₂O and CO₂ at center line of the furnace. Generally, modified geometry improves the performance of furnace compared to reference. We also present data of total energy and temperature to get a comprehensive insight of the furnace performance. The simulation results can be used as a consideration to improve the efficiency of steam power plants by adjusting the direction of secondary air flow.

Project description:Transient Eulerian simulations of multiphase flow inside a laboratory-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser were performed with air, bed material, and a secondary solid phase to evaluate the mixing of the secondary solid phase. This simulation data can be applied in model development or for computing terms that are commonly used when modeling mixing with simplified models (pseudo-steady state, non-convective models, etc.). The data was produced with transient Eulerian modeling using Ansys Fluent 19.2. The simulations were done with one fluidization velocity and bed material, while the density, particle size, and inlet velocity of the secondary solid phase was varied and 10 simulations per each secondary solid phase case were simulated for 1 s, each simulation having different starting conditions (flow state of the air and bed material) inside the riser. These 10 cases were then averaged to provide an average mixing profile for each secondary solid phase. Both the averaged and un-average data are included. The details of the modeling, averaging, geometry, materials, and cases are described in the open-access publication by Nikku et al. (Chem. Eng. Sci. 269, 118503).

Bubbling behavior of a fluidized bed of fine particles caused by vibration-induced air inflow.

Project description:We demonstrate that a vibration-induced air inflow can cause vigorous bubbling in a bed of fine particles and report the mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs. When convective flow occurs in a powder bed as a result of vibrations, the upper powder layer with a high void ratio moves downward and is compressed. This process forces the air in the powder layer out, which leads to the formation of bubbles that rise and eventually burst at the top surface of the powder bed. A negative pressure is created below the rising bubbles. A narrow opening at the bottom allows the outside air to flow into the powder bed, which produces a vigorously bubbling fluidized bed that does not require the use of an external air supply system.

Calcination of Clay Raw Materials in a Fluidized Bed.

Project description:Clay raw materials are diverse in terms of their mineral composition, as well as the content of colouring oxides and their physical properties. Determining the suitability of raw materials for various purposes requires comprehensive studies on their properties, as well as their appropriate correction, which is possible through the use of appropriate modification techniques. One of the most commonly used technologies for the enrichment of clay raw materials is to subject them to high temperatures, which, depending on the temperature regime used in the technological process, may cause the decomposition and removal of some addditional components (e.g., carbonates), as well as the removal of water and dehydroxylation of clay minerals, reversible structural changes, and the complete and permanent reconstruction of the mineral phases. This paper presents a new application for fluidization technology in the calcination of clay raw materials. The results of the experiment show that the fluidization method is competitive compared to the technologies that have been used so far, as a result of, inter alia, the much shorter time period required to carry out the calcination process and, consequently, the much lower energy expenditure, the high efficiency of burning coal, and the lower CO2 emissions resulting from the mixing taking place in the reactor.

Life Cycle Assessment of Advanced Circulating Fluidized Bed Municipal Solid Waste Incineration System from an Environmental and Exergetic Perspective.

Project description:The production of clean and efficient energy from municipal solid waste (MSW) is extremely urgent matter due to an increasing energy demand and environmental concerns. In this study, a high steam parameter (520 °C, 7.9 MPa) circulating fluidized bed (CFB) MSW incineration system, equipped with a mechanical, biological treatment and external heat exchanger systems, was introduced and a comparative study with a typical mechanical grate (450 °C, 5.3 MPa) incineration system and conventional CFB (485 °C, 5.3 MPa) incineration system was carried out from a life-cycle, environmental and exergetic perspective which could assess different energy and material outputs based on real operating data. Moreover, the potential system optimization of this advanced CFB system was proposed. The results showed that the advanced CFB system was more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient than conventional MSW incineration systems. The recovery of material should be given priority over energy recovery. According to the assessment of the environment, and energy and material recovery, a process improvement with an incinerated refuse-derived fuel and a semi-compost produced by MBT as a soil conditioner was highly recommended.

Computational fluid dynamics benchmark dataset of airflow in tracheas.

Project description:Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is fast becoming a useful tool to aid clinicians in pre-surgical planning through the ability to provide information that could otherwise be extremely difficult if not impossible to obtain. However, in order to provide clinically relevant metrics, the accuracy of the computational method must be sufficiently high. There are many alternative methods employed in the process of performing CFD simulations within the airways, including different segmentation and meshing strategies, as well as alternative approaches to solving the Navier-Stokes equations. However, as in vivo validation of the simulated flow patterns within the airways is not possible, little exists in the way of validation of the various simulation techniques. The data presented here consists of very highly resolved flow data. The degree of resolution is compared to the highest necessary resolutions of the Kolmogorov length and time scales. Therefore this data is ideally suited to act as a benchmark case to which cheaper computational methods may be compared. A dataset and solution setup for one such more efficient method, large eddy simulation (LES), is also presented.

Factorial design analysis of parameters for the sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol in a circulating fluidized bed riser using CFD.

Project description:The sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol (SESRE) has recently been reported as a novel process for hydrogen (H2) production. SESRE can operate well on a Ni-based catalyst with dolomite as a sorbent in packed-bed reactors. In this study, the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) concept was proposed to obtain higher productivity and continuous operation of SESRE. Particular focus was directed to the design and selection of suitable operating conditions of the CFB riser. Two-dimensional transient models using the Euler-Euler approach and the kinetic theory of granular flows were applied to investigate the H2 production performance from a pilot-scale riser. The 2 k full factorial design method was utilized to examine the significances of five specific parameters, namely, the riser diameter, inlet temperature, catalyst-to-sorbent ratio, solid flux, and inlet gas velocity on two response variables, namely, H2 purity and H2 flux. From the ANOVA results, either the main effect or the interactions of each parameter were shown to be significant on both the H2 purity and the H2 flux, particularly the riser diameter and the solid flux. For optimizing the operation and reaction parameters, the best case was the system with riser diameter of 0.2 m, inlet temperature of 600 °C, catalyst-to-sorbent ratio of 2.54 kg kg-1, solid flux of 200 kg m-2 s-1, and gas velocity of 3 m s-1, obtaining H2 purity of 91.30% on a dry basis with a significantly high H2 flux of 0.147 kg m-2 s-1. The hydrodynamics showed that SESRE reached breakthrough within the bottom dense zone. However, incomplete conversion occurred in the core of the riser because of the very dilute bed.

Antioxidant Activity of the Lignins Derived from Fluidized-Bed Fast Pyrolysis.

Project description:A challenge in recent years has been the rational use of forest and agriculture residues for the production of bio-fuel, biochemical, and other bioproducts. In this study, potentially useful compounds from pyrolytic lignins were identified by HPLC-MS/MS and untargeted metabolomics. The metabolites identified were 2-(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-propanol, benzyl benzoate, fisetinidol, phenyllactic acid, 2-phenylpropionic acid, 6,3'-dimethoxyflavone, and vanillin. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (DPPH), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and total phenolics content (TPC) per gram of pyrolytic lignin ranged from 14 to 503 mg ascorbic acid equivalents, 35 to 277 mg trolox equivalents, and 0.42 to 50 mg gallic acid equivalents, respectively. A very significant correlation was observed between the DPPH and TPC (r = 0.8663, p ? 0.0001), TEAC and TPC (r = 0.8044, p ? 0.0001), and DPPH and TEAC (r = 0.8851, p ? 0.0001). The polyphenolic compounds in the pyrolytic lignins which are responsible for radical scavenging activity and antioxidant properties can be readily profiled with HPLC-MS/MS combined with untargeted metabolomics. The results also suggest that DPPH, TEAC, and TPC assays are suitable methods for the measurement of antioxidant activity in a variety of pyrolytic lignins. These data show that the pyrolytic lignins can be considered as promising sources of natural antioxidants and value-added chemicals.

Integrated Purification and Formulation of an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient via Agitated Bed Crystallization and Fluidized Bed Processing.

Project description:Integrated API and drug product processing enable molecules with high clinical efficacy but poor physicochemical characteristics to be commercialized by direct co-processing with excipients to produce advanced multicomponent intermediates. Furthermore, developing isolation-free frameworks would enable end-to-end continuous processing of drugs. The aim of this work was to purify a model API (sodium ibuprofen) and impurity (ibuprofen ethyl ester) system and then directly process it into a solid-state formulation without isolating a solid API phase. Confined agitated bed crystallization is proposed to purify a liquid stream of impure API from 4% to 0.2% w/w impurity content through periodic or parallelized operations. This stream is combined with a polymer solution in an intermediary tank, enabling the API to be spray coated directly onto microcrystalline cellulose beads. The spray coating process was developed using a Design of Experiments approach, allowing control over the drug loading efficiency and the crystallinity of the API on the beads by altering the process parameters. The DoE study indicated that the solvent volume was the dominant factor controlling the drug loading efficiency, while a combination of factors influenced the crystallinity. The products from the fluidized bed are ideal for processing into final drug products and can subsequently be coated to control drug release.

Effect of bed characters on the direct synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane in fluidized bed reactor.

Project description:This paper presents the numerical investigation of the effects of the general bed characteristics such as superficial gas velocities, bed temperature, bed heights and particle size, on the direct synthesis in a 3D fluidized bed reactor. A 3D model for the gas flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer was coupled to the direct synthesis reaction mechanism verified in the literature. The model was verified by comparing the simulated reaction rate and dimethyldichlorosilane (M2) selectivity with the experimental data in the open literature and real production data. Computed results indicate that superficial gas velocities, bed temperature, bed heights, and particle size have vital effect on the reaction rates and/or M2 selectivity.
