Anisotropic functionalized platelets: percolation, porosity and network properties.

ABSTRACT: Anisotropic functionalized platelets are able to model the assembly behaviour of molecular systems in two dimensions thanks to the unique combination of steric and bonding constraints. The assembly scenarios can vary from open to close-packed crystals, finite clusters and chains, according to the features of the imposed constraints. In this work, we focus on the assembly of equilibrium networks. These networks can be seen as disordered, porous monolayers and can be of interest for instance in nano-filtration and optical applications. We investigate the formation and properties of two dimensional networks from shape anisotropic colloids functionalized with four patches. We characterize the connectivity properties, the typical local bonding motives, as well as the geometric features of the emerging networks for a large variety of different systems. Our results show that networks of shape anisotropic colloids assemble into highly versatile network topologies, that may be utilized for applications at the nanoscale.

Terpyridine-Induced Folding of Anisotropic Polyphosphoester Platelets.

Project description:The folding of macromolecules is of great importance in nature. Also in synthetic polymer chemistry, single-chain nanoparticles, i.e. folding synthetic macromolecules, are a current research topic to mimic protein folding and to generate well-defined structures. Here, we present the "folding" of anisotropic polymer platelets to further mimic natural folding processes on the (sub)micrometer scale. We report on the synthesis of terpyridine-functionalized long-chain polyphosphoesters by acyclic diene metathesis polymerization that can crystallize in dilute solution into anisotropic polymer crystal platelets. As the terpyridine units are expelled to the platelet surface, terpyridine-metal interactions could be induced by adding nickel(II) bis(acetylacetonate) (Ni(acac)2) to the platelet dispersion in ethyl acetate. These polymer crystals were "folded" to homogeneous nanoparticles with a wrinkled structure, which were visualized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The size and size distribution of the obtained assemblies could be altered by varying the concentration of Ni(acac)2. In contrast, no wrinkled structures but rather intrachain cross-linking was observed, when Ni(acac)2 was added to the homogeneous polymer solution before crystallization. We believe that this concept of "folding" anisotropic polymer platelets will further enhance the control of morphologies on (sub)micrometer particles and might be useful for catalysis or separation.

The upper percolation threshold and porosity-permeability relationship in sandstone reservoirs using digital image analysis.

Project description:Subsurface sandstone deposits represent globally ubiquitous reservoirs which can potentially provide the characteristics necessary for the effective geological storage of CO2. Geological carbon storage is widely agreed to be a key asset in tackling anthropogenic emissions and climate change to reach a sustainable 'net zero', despite the present financial challenges associated with it. Therefore, improved understanding of the characteristics of the materials in which we plan to store many gigatons of CO2 is critical. Developing cheaper characterisation techniques is therefore crucial to support the global push for net zero. In this work we use digital analysis of 3D microscale X-ray images of a range of sandstone samples to constrain the porosity-permeability relationship and the upper percolation threshold; the point at which near full pore structure connectivity is achieved. This is one of the most significant controls on the viability of carbon storage as a practical solution to achieving net zero. We find that the upper percolation threshold in sandstone occurs at ca. 14% total porosity whilst the relationship between porosity ([Formula: see text]) and permeability ([Formula: see text]) can be defined as [Formula: see text]. The investigation of the upper percolation threshold may allow a target criterion to be designated when assessing potential carbon storage reservoirs, whilst investigation of the porosity-permeability relationship allows for a greater understanding of the fluid flow regimes in the subsurface. By using a digital technique to assess carbon storage reservoir potentiality we show that initial characterisation of reservoirs can be carried out rapidly and relatively economically, prior to further full reservoir characterisation studies. This approach is also non-destructive, allowing samples to be reused and multiple analytical phases performed on the same materials.

Chemical structure, network topology, and porosity effects on the mechanical properties of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks.

Project description:The mechanical properties of seven zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) based on five unique network topologies have been systematically characterized by single-crystal nanoindentation studies. We demonstrate that the elastic properties of ZIF crystal structures are strongly correlated to the framework density and the underlying porosity. For the systems considered here, the elastic modulus was found to range from 3 to 10 GPa, whereas the hardness property lies between 300 MPa and 1.1 GPa. Notably, these properties are superior to those of other metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as MOF-5. In substituted imidazolate frameworks, our results show that their mechanical properties are mainly governed by the rigidity and bulkiness of the substituted organic linkages. The framework topology and the intricate pore morphology can also influence the degree of mechanical anisotropy. Our findings present the previously undescribed structure-mechanical property relationships pertaining to hybrid open frameworks that are important for the design and application of new MOF materials.

Network Anatomy Controlling Abrupt-like Percolation Transition.

Project description:We virtually dissect complex networks in order to understand their internal structure, just as doctors do with the bodies of animals. Our novel method classifies network links into four categories: bone, fat, cartilage, and muscle, based on network connectivity. We derive an efficient percolation strategy from this new viewpoint of network anatomy, which enables abrupt-like percolation transition through removal of a small amount of cartilage links, which play a crucial role in network connectivity. Furthermore, we find nontrivial scaling laws in the relationships between four types of links in each cluster and evaluate power exponents, which characterize network structures as seen in the real large-scale network of trading business firms and in the Erdős-Rényi network. Finally, we observe changes in the transition point for random bond percolation process, demonstrating that the addition of muscle links enhances network robustness, while fat links are irrelevant. These findings aid in controlling the percolation transition for an arbitrary network.

Anisotropic Porosity and Interface Synergy Enhanced Gas Permselectivity in Heterolayer Metal-Organic Framework Membrane.

Project description:The pursuit of sustainable, carbon-free separation technology hinges on the efficient separation of gas mixtures with high separation factors and flow rates, i. e. high permselectivity. However, achieving this objective is arduous due to the meticulous engineering at the angstrom scale and intricate chemical manipulation required to design the pores within membranes. To address this challenge, a proof-of-concept for an anisotropic porous membrane has been devised. Employing a meticulous step-by-step methodology, two distinct porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are integrated to form a monolithic anisotropic membrane. By harnessing pore anisotropy (3.4 to 6 Å) aligned with the gas permeation direction and a unique interface characterized by cross-linked pores derived from the two distinct MOFs, this membrane transcends the performance limitations inherent in the individual MOF membranes (~45 % enhanced selectivity). This approach not only sheds light on the heterolayer membrane design strategy but also elucidates the intricate CO2/N2 permselectivity relationship inherent in the interface structure.

RGDfK-functionalized gold nanorods bind only to activated platelets.

Project description:Integrin-targeting peptide RGDfK-labeled gold nanorods (GNR) seek to improve hyperthermia targeted to solid tumors by exploiting the known up-regulation of integrin αvβ3 cell membrane proteins on solid tumor vasculature surfaces. Tumor binding specificity might be expected since surrounding tissues and endothelial cells have limited numbers of these receptors. However, RGD peptide binding to many proteins is promiscuous, with known affinity to several families of cell integrin receptors, and also possible binding to platelets after intravenous infusion via a different integrin receptor, αIIbβ3, on platelets. Binding of RGDfK-targeted GNR could considerably impact platelet function, ultimately leading to increased risk of bleeding or thrombosis depending on the degree of interaction. We sought to determine if RGDfK-labeled GNR could interact with platelets and alter platelet function. Targeted and untargeted nanorods exhibited little interaction with resting platelets in platelet rich plasma (PRP) preparations. However, upon platelet activation, peptide-targeted nanorods bound actively to platelets. Addition of RGDfK-GNR to unactivated platelets had little effect on markers of platelet activation, indicating that RGDfK-nanorods were incapable of inducing platelet activation. We next tested whether activated platelet function was altered in the presence of peptide-targeted nanorods. Platelet aggregation in whole blood and PRP in the presence of targeted nanorods had no significant effect on platelet aggregation. These data suggest that RGDfK-GNR alone have little impact on platelet function in plasma. However, nonspecific nanorod binding may occur in vascular beds where activated platelets are normally cleared, such as the spleen and liver, producing a possible toxicity risk for these nanomaterials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Modulating pentenoate-functionalized hyaluronic acid hydrogel network properties for meniscal fibrochondrocyte mechanotransduction.

Project description:Knee meniscus tears are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries. While meniscus replacements using allografts or biomaterial-based scaffolds are available, these treatments rarely result in integrated, functional tissue. Understanding mechanotransducive signaling cues that promote a meniscal cell regenerative phenotype is critical to developing therapies that promote tissue regeneration rather than fibrosis after injury. The purpose of this study was to develop a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel system with tunable crosslinked network properties by modulating the degree of substitution (DoS) of reactive-ene groups to investigate mechanotransducive cues received by meniscal fibrochondrocytes (MFCs) from their microenvironment. A thiol-ene step-growth polymerization crosslinking mechanism was employed using pentenoate-functionalized hyaluronic acid (PHA) and dithiothreitol to achieve tunability of the chemical crosslinks and resulting network properties. Increased crosslink density, reduced swelling, and increased compressive modulus (60-1020 kPa) were observed with increasing DoS. Osmotic deswelling effects were apparent in PBS and DMEM+ compared to water; swelling ratios and compressive moduli were decreased in the ionic buffers. Frequency sweep studies showed storage and loss moduli of hydrogels at 1 Hz approach reported meniscus values and showed increasing viscous response with increasing DoS. The degradation rate increased with decreasing DoS. Lastly, modulating PHA hydrogel surface modulus resulted in control of MFC morphology, suggesting relatively soft hydrogels (E = 60 ± 35 kPa) promote more inner meniscus phenotype compared to rigid hydrogels (E = 610 ± 66 kPa). Overall, these results highlight the use of -ene DoS modulation in PHA hydrogels to tune crosslink density and physical properties to understand mechanotransduction mechanisms required to promote meniscus regeneration.

Mapping temporal-network percolation to weighted, static event graphs.

Project description:The dynamics of diffusion-like processes on temporal networks are influenced by correlations in the times of contacts. This influence is particularly strong for processes where the spreading agent has a limited lifetime at nodes: disease spreading (recovery time), diffusion of rumors (lifetime of information), and passenger routing (maximum acceptable time between transfers). We introduce weighted event graphs as a powerful and fast framework for studying connectivity determined by time-respecting paths where the allowed waiting times between contacts have an upper limit. We study percolation on the weighted event graphs and in the underlying temporal networks, with simulated and real-world networks. We show that this type of temporal-network percolation is analogous to directed percolation, and that it can be characterized by multiple order parameters.

Network percolation reveals adaptive bridges of the mobility network response to COVID-19.

Project description:Human mobility is crucial to understand the transmission pattern of COVID-19 on spatially embedded geographic networks. This pattern seems unpredictable, and the propagation appears unstoppable, resulting in over 350,000 death tolls in the U.S. by the end of 2020. Here, we create the spatiotemporal inter-county mobility network using 10 TB (Terabytes) trajectory data of 30 million smart devices in the U.S. in the first six months of 2020. We investigate the bond percolation process by removing the weakly connected edges. As we increase the threshold, the mobility network nodes become less interconnected and thus experience surprisingly abrupt phase transitions. Despite the complex behaviors of the mobility network, we devised a novel approach to identify a small, manageable set of recurrent critical bridges, connecting the giant component and the second-largest component. These adaptive links, located across the United States, played a key role as valves connecting components in divisions and regions during the pandemic. Beyond, our numerical results unveil that network characteristics determine the critical thresholds and the bridge locations. The findings provide new insights into managing and controlling the connectivity of mobility networks during unprecedented disruptions. The work can also potentially offer practical future infectious diseases both globally and locally.

Temporal percolation of the susceptible network in an epidemic spreading.

Project description:In this work, we study the evolution of the susceptible individuals during the spread of an epidemic modeled by the susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) process spreading on the top of complex networks. Using an edge-based compartmental approach and percolation tools, we find that a time-dependent quantity ?S(t), namely, the probability that a given neighbor of a node is susceptible at time t, is the control parameter of a node void percolation process involving those nodes on the network not-reached by the disease. We show that there exists a critical time t(c) above which the giant susceptible component is destroyed. As a consequence, in order to preserve a macroscopic connected fraction of the network composed by healthy individuals which guarantee its functionality, any mitigation strategy should be implemented before this critical time t(c). Our theoretical results are confirmed by extensive simulations of the SIR process.
