Surface Oxygen Deficiency Enabled Spontaneous Antiprotein Fouling in WO₃ Nanosheets for Biosensing in Biological Fluids.

ABSTRACT: Biofouling deteriorates the performance of sensors operated in biofluids. Protein adsorption is believed to be the first step of biofouling, which also reduces biocompatibility by further inducing cell adhesion, platelet activation, and even inflammation. Current studies of antifouling coatings are focused on polymers and hydrogels, which have succeeded in remaining resistant to protein adsorption, but their application on sensor electrodes is limited due to low conductivity and biocompatibility. Here, we report a spontaneous antibiofouling strategy for sensor electrodes by controlling oxygen vacancies in WO₃ nanosheets. Irreversible adsorption of proteins was reduced by 76% in unprocessed human plasma when electrodes were coated with WO₃ rich in surface oxygen vacancy. These electrodes maintained 91% of the initial current density after 1 month of incubation in human plasma.

Microwave Synthesized 2D WO3 Nanosheets for VOCs Gas Sensors.

Project description:As an n-type semiconductor material, tungsten oxide (WO3) has good application prospects in the field of gas sensing. Herein, using oxalic acid (OA), citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA) as auxiliary agents, three homogeneous tungsten oxide nanosheets were prepared by the rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The potential exhaled gases of various diseases were screened for the gas sensitivity test. Compared with WO3-OA and WO3-TA, WO3-CA exhibits significant sensitivity to formaldehyde, acetone and various alkanes. Photoluminescence (PL) chromatography and photoelectric properties show that its excellent gas sensitivity is due to its abundant oxygen vacancies and high surface charge migration rate, which can provide more preferential reaction sites with gas molecules. The experiment is of great significance for the sensor selection of the large disease exhaled gas sensor array.

Effect of oxygen deficiency on the excited state kinetics of WO3 and implications for photocatalysis.

Project description:Oxygen vacancies are widely used to tune the light absorption of semiconducting metal oxides, but a photophysical framework describing the impact of such point defects on the dynamics of photogenerated charges, and ultimately on catalysis, is still missing. We herein use WO3 as a model material and investigate the impact of significantly different degrees of oxygen deficiency on its excited state kinetics. For highly oxygen-deficient films, photoelectron spectroscopy shows an over 2 eV broad distribution of oxygen vacancy states within the bandgap which gives rise to extended visible light absorption. We examine the nature of this distribution using first-principles defect calculations and find that defects aggregate to form clusters rather than isolated vacancy sites. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we observe trapping of photogenerated holes within 200 fs after excitation at high degrees of oxygen deficiency, which increases their lifetime at the expense of oxidative driving force. This loss in driving force limits the use of metal oxides with significant degrees of sub-stoichiometry to photocatalytic reactions that require low oxidation power such as pollutant degradation, and highlights the need to fine-tune vacancy state distributions for specific target reactions.

Acetone Sensing Properties and Mechanism of Rh-Loaded WO3 Nanosheets.

Project description:WO3 nanosheets was prepared by an acidification method and the Rh catalyst was dispersed on the surface of the nanosheets with a wet impregnation method. The morphology of pristine WO3 and Rh modified WO3 nanosheets and their responses to acetone gas were studied. According to oxygen adsorption combined with TPR results, the sensing and sensitization mechanism of acetone were discussed. It was found that no visible changes in nanostructures or morphologies were observed in WO3 nanosheets with Rh, however, the sensor resistance and sensor response were greatly promoted. The basic sensitization mechanism could be caused by the electronic interaction between oxidized Rh and WO3 surface.

Two-Dimensional Bi2WO6 Nanosheets as a Robust Catalyst toward Photocyclization.

Project description:The present work describes the improved photocatalytic activity of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted Bi2WO6 (CBTH) toward the synthesis of bioactive benzazoles. X-ray diffraction analysis of CBTH suggests that crystal growth has occurred along the (200) plane, whereas field-emission scanning electron microscopy images confirm two-dimensional rose bud morphology and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis suggests the formation of thin nanosheets possessing an orthorhombic structure. Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and Py-IR measurements indicate substantial acidity with the generation of Brønsted acid sites on the surface of CBTH. Raman spectra of CBTH also corroborate these observations with the formation of defects within [Bi2O2]2+ layers, resulting in decreased thickness and shapes of nanoplates. These beneficial properties are explored toward the photochemical synthesis of benzazoles using a 35 W tungsten lamp and a CBTH photocatalyst, resulting in better yields at lesser exposure time. It is observed that the catalytic activity is retained up to five consecutive cycles with marginal decrease in % yield. Such a feature can be ascribed to the photostability of the photocatalyst even after continuous exposure to light, implying that the surface active sites remained unaltered as evident from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of pre- and post-characterization of CBTH. Moreover, decrease in the surface hydroxyl groups after five catalytic cycles also accounts for the generation of enhanced Brønsted sites owing to the presence of Bi-O on the surface of CBTH. It exhibits better catalytic activity as compared to other photocatalysts employed for the synthesis of benzazoles. Thus, CBTH serves as a robust photocatalyst for the facile synthesis of these heterocycles in a sustainable manner.

Formation Pathways of Lath-Shaped WO3 Nanosheets and Elemental W Nanoparticles from Heating of WO3 Nanocrystals Studied via In Situ TEM.

Project description:WO3 is a versatile material occurring in many polymorphs, and is used in nanostructured form in many applications, including photocatalysis, gas sensing, and energy storage. We investigated the thermal evolution of cubic-phase nanocrystals with a size range of 5-25 nm by means of in situ heating in the transmission electron microscope (TEM), and found distinct pathways for the formation of either 2D WO3 nanosheets or elemental W nanoparticles, depending on the initial concentration of deposited WO3 nanoparticles. These pristine particles were stable up to 600 °C, after which coalescence and fusion of the nanocrystals were observed. Typically, the nanocrystals transformed into faceted nanocrystals of elemental body-centered-cubic W after annealing to 900 °C. However, in areas where the concentration of dropcast WO3 nanoparticles was high, at a temperature of 900 °C, considerably larger lath-shaped nanosheets (extending for hundreds of nanometers in length and up to 100 nm in width) were formed that are concluded to be in monoclinic WO3 or WO2.7 phases. These lath-shaped 2D particles, which often curled up from their sides into folded 2D nanosheets, are most likely formed from the smaller nanoparticles through a solid-vapor-solid growth mechanism. The findings of the in situ experiments were confirmed by ex situ experiments performed in a high-vacuum chamber.

PVP-Modified Multifunctional Bi2WO6 Nanosheets for Enhanced CT Imaging and Cancer Radiotherapy.

Project description:Malignant tumors are one of the main causes of human death. The clinical treatment of malignant tumors is usually surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and so forth. Radiotherapy, as a traditional and effective treatment method for cancer, is widely used in clinical practice, but the radiation resistance of tumor cells and the toxic side effects to normal cells are still the Achilles heel of radiotherapy. Multifunctional inorganic high-atom nanomaterials are expected to enhance the effect of tumor radiotherapy. Tungsten and bismuth, which contain elements with high atomic coefficients, have strong X-ray energy attenuation capability. We synthesized Bi2WO6 nanosheets (NSs) using a hydrothermal synthesis method and modified polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on their surface to make them more stable. PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs have a variety of effects after absorbing X-rays (such as the photoelectric effect and Compton effect) and release a variety of particles such as photoelectrons, Compton electrons, auger electrons, and so forth, which can react with organic molecules or water in cells, generate a large number of free radicals, and promote cell apoptosis, thereby improving the effect of radiotherapy. We show through γ-H2AX and DCFH-DA probe analysis experiments that PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can effectively increase cell DNA damage and reactive oxygen species formation under X-ray irradiation. Clone formation analysis showed that PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can effectively suppress cell colony formation under X-ray irradiation. These versatile functions endow PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs with enhanced radiotherapy efficacy in animal models. In addition, PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can also be used as contrast agents for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging with obvious effects. Therefore, PVP-Bi2WO6 NSs can be used as CT imaging contrast agents and tumor radiotherapy sensitizers and have potential medical applications.

Electrochemical Detection of Ethanol in Air Using Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Combined with Au-WO3.

Project description:Detection, monitoring, and analysis of ethanol are important in various fields such as health care, food industries, and safety control. In this study, we report that a solid electrolyte gas sensor based on a proton-conducting membrane is promising for detecting ethanol in air. We focused on graphene oxide (GO) as a new solid electrolyte because it shows a high proton conductivity at room temperature. GO nanosheets are synthesized by oxidation and exfoliation of expanded graphite via the Tour's method. GO membranes are fabricated by stacking GO nanosheets by vacuum filtration. To detect ethanol, Au-loaded WO3 is used as the sensing electrode due to the excellent activity of gold nanoparticles for the catalysis of organic molecules. Au-WO3 is coupled with rGO (reduced graphene oxide) to facilitate the electron transport in the electrode. Ce ions are intercalated into the GO membrane to facilitate proton transport. The sensor based on the Ce doped-GO membrane combined with Au-WO3/rGO as a sensing electrode shows good electric potential difference (ΔV) responses to ethanol in the air at room temperature. The sensor signal reaches more than 600 mV in response to ethanol at 40 ppm in air, making it possible to detect ethanol at a few ppb (parts per billion) level. The ethanol sensing mechanism was discussed in terms of the mixed-potential theory and catalysis of ethanol on Au-WO3.

Fast response-recovery time toward acetone by a sensor prepared with Pd doped WO3 nanosheets.

Project description:Pd-WO3 nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method using Na2PdCl4 solution as the palladium source and sodium tungstate as the tungsten source, and were used to detect acetone. After being characterized by TEM, XRD, BET and XPS, it was found that Pd doped on the surface of WO3 nanosheets was mainly present as metal palladium, and the specific surface area increased after doping. In addition, the effect of Pd doping on gas sensing properties was studied. When the Pd-doped amount was 2 at%, sensors fabricated with the composites had the best gas sensing performance. Under a 100 ppm acetone atmosphere, the response time was 1 s and the recovery time was 9 s. The detection limit for acetone was 50 ppb at the optimum working temperature of 300 °C, and the selectivity for acetone was excellent under 100 ppm atmosphere (S acetone/S ethanol = 5.06). The excellent gas sensing properties of this material are mainly attributed to the high catalytic activity and the catalytic spill-over effect of the Pd nanoparticles, which provided additional active sites for the sensitive materials.

Oxygen Vacancy in WO3 Film-based FET with Ionic Liquid Gating.

Project description:Ionic liquid gating is a versatile method for inducing a metal-insulator transition in field-effect transistor device structures. The mechanism of carrier doping in metal oxide films is under debate. Ionic liquid gating of a WO3 film-based field effect transistor is discussed in this report. Flat and relatively smooth WO3 films were deposited on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Swept and constant gate voltage characteristics are measured in both argon and oxygen atmospheres. The results show a clear dependence on the oxygen pressure of the experimental chamber. Metallic behavior in the films is attributed to oxygen vacancy formation in the WO3 layer induced by the high electric field at the oxide-ionic liquid interface. The density of states of a monoclinic supercell of oxygen deficient WO3 was studied by density functional theory (DFT). Calculated W and O partial densities of states verify metallic behavior even at dilute oxygen vacancy concentrations and show the role of W and O orbitals in the conductivity.
