Project description:One-dimensional (1D) yarn or fiber-based supercapacitors that have small diameter, volume and high mechanical strength are needed due to the demands on power source for wearable electronics, micro-devices, and implantable medical devices. The composite sheath is fabricated on a commercially available CNT yarn substrate by alternating depositions of MnO2 and Ag layers. Synergistic effect of high loading level of pseudocapacitive MnO2 and reasonably improved rate-capability are achieved. In the composite sheath, the interconnected networks provide electrical contact between MnO2 aggregates and adjacent Ag layer. The conductive Ag inter layers shorten the solid-state charge diffusion length in the MnO2. Moreover, generated electrons during the charge/discharge process can be collected rapidly by the adjacent Ag layer, therefore, the great extents of MnO2 could be loaded onto the surface of CNT core fiber electrode without a significant rate-capability degradation. Due to the high MnO2 loading level, the composite sheath-core yarn supercapacitor showed excellent specific areal capacitance (322.2 mF/cm2) and according energy density (18.3 µWh/cm2).

Project description:Core/shell-like nanostructured xLi2MnO3·(1-x)LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn) composite cathode materials are successfully synthesized through a simple solid-state reaction using a mechanochemical ball-milling process. The LiMO2 core is designed to have a high-content of Ni, which increases the specific capacity. The detrimental surface effects arising from the high Ni-content are countered by the Li2MnO3 shell, which stabilizes the nanoparticles. The electrochemical performances and thermal stabilities of the synthesized nanocomposites are compared with those of bare LiMO2. In particular, the results of time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TR-XRD) analyses of xLi2MnO3·(1-x)LiMO2 nanocomposites as well as their differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) profiles demonstrate that the Li2MnO3 shell is effective in stabilizing the LiMO2 core at high temperatures, making the nanocomposites highly suitable from a safety viewpoint.

Project description:α-Na0.5Mn0.93O2@Na0.91MnO2 (NaMnO) and K0.48Mn1.94O5@Na0.91MnO2 (KNaMnO) nanocomposites have been synthesized using solid-state reaction method. FESEM results convey the formation of column-shaped morphology. FTIR exhibited a shift in the vibration frequency upon potassium loading. Cyclic voltammetric curves are scanned (0 V-0.8 V) at different scan rates (5 mV/s to 100 mV/s) in 1M KOH electrolyte. Galvanostatic charge-discharge characteristics, for different current densities, have shown non-linear or pseudocapacitive characteristics of the prepared electrodes. High specific capacitance of ∼361 F/g and ∼143 F/g, at a current density of 1A/g, has been achieved for KNaMnO and NaMnO samples, respectively. KNaMnO sample exhibited higher capacitive retention (116 %), up to 2000 cycles, and obeys lower series resistance, charge transfer resistance, and Warburg impedance parameters, thus, convey higher efficiency of this compound for supercapacitor applications.

Project description:In this work, a novel wire-shaped supercapacitor based on nylon yarn with a high specific capacitance and energy density was developed by designing an asymmetric configuration and integrating pseudocapacitive materials for both electrodes. The nylon/Ag/MnO2 yarn was prepared as a positive electrode by electrochemically depositing MnO2 on a silver-paste-coated nylon yarn. Additionally, PPy was prepared on nylon/Ag yarn by chemical polymerization firstly to enlarge the surface roughness of nylon/Ag, and then the PPy could be easily coated on the chemically polymerized nylon/Ag/PPy by electrochemical polymerization to obtain a nylon/Ag/PPy yarn-shaped negative electrode. The wire-shaped asymmetric supercapacitor (WASC) was fabricated by assembling the nylon/Ag/MnO2 electrode, nylon/Ag/PPy electrode and PAANa/Na2SO4 gel electrolyte. This WASC showed a wide potential window of 1.6 V and a high energy density varying from 13.9 to 4.2 μWh cm-2 with the corresponding power density changing from 290 to 2902 μW cm-2. Meanwhile, because of the high flexibility of the nylon substrate and superior adhesion of active materials, the WASC showed a good electrochemical performance stability under different bending conditions, suggesting its good flexibility. The promising performance of this novel WASC is of great potential for wearable/portable devices in the future.

Project description:We present an environment-friendly and highly efficient method for the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to carboxylic acids or ketones in air via light irradiation under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. The photoreaction system exhibits a wide substrate scope and the potential for large-scale applications. Most of the desired products are easily obtained via recrystallization and separation from low-boiling reaction medium acetone in good yields, and the products can be subsequent directly transformed without further purification.

Project description:Lack of visible light response and low quantum yield hinder the practical application of TiO2 as a high-performance photocatalyst. Herein, we present a rational design of TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) decorated with Ag/Ag2S nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and covered by graphene oxide (GO) at room temperature. Ag/Ag2S NPs with uniform sizes are well-dispersed on the TiO2 nanorods (NRs) as evidenced by electron microscopic analyses. The photocatalyst GO/Ag/Ag2S decorated TiO2 NRAs shows much higher visible light absorption response, which leads to remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activities on both dye degradation and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Its photocatalytic reaction efficiency is 600% higher than that of pure TiO2 sample under visible light. This remarkable enhancement can be attributed to a synergy of electron-sink function and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPs, band matching of Ag2S NPs, and rapid charge carrier transport by GO, which significantly improves charge separation of the photoexcited TiO2. The photocurrent density of GO/Ag/Ag2S-TiO2 NRAs reached to maximum (i.e. 6.77 mA cm-2 vs. 0 V). Our study proves that the rational design of composite nanostructures enhances the photocatalytic activity under visible light, and efficiently utilizes the complete solar spectrum for pollutant degradation.

Project description:Nanocomposites SnO2/MnOx with various manganese content (up to [Mn]/[Sn] = 10 mol. %) and different manganese distribution were prepared by wet chemical technique and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and mapping, IR and Raman spectroscopy, total reflection X-ray fluorescence, mass-spectrometry with inductive-coupled plasma (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A different distribution of manganese between the volume and the surface of the SnO2 crystallites was revealed depending on the total Mn concentration. Furthermore, the identification of surface MnO2 segregation was performed via Raman spectroscopy. There is a strong dependence of the sensor signal toward CO and, especially, NO) on the presence of MnO2 surface segregation. However, manganese ions intruding the SnO2 crystal structure were shown to not almost effect on sensor properties of the material.

Project description:The oxidation of primary alcohols under mechanochemical conditions in a Spex8000M Mixer/Mill was investigated. To facilitate ease of separation and recyclability, a polystyrene-bound version of a TEMPO catalyst was employed. When paired with Oxone® in a stainless-steel vial with a stainless-steel ball, several primary alcohols were successfully oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acids. The product was isolated using gravity filtration, which also allowed for the polystyrene-bound TEMPO catalyst to be recovered and reused in subsequent oxidation reactions. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the size and steric hindrance of the primary alcohol does not hinder the rate of the reaction. Finally, the aldehyde was selectively obtained from a primary alcohol under ball milling conditions by using a combination of non-supported TEMPO with a copper vial and copper ball.

Project description:UV light promoted selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols has been demonstrated under 'metal-free' and 'additive-free' conditions. Under the optimized conditions, a variety of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and alicyclic alcohols have been examined for their transformations to the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The mechanistic studies emphasize the important role of substrate (alcohol) and solvent (DMSO) in the generation of superoxide radical which is a vital intermediate for the transformation. This study also highlights the role of air as the oxidant in the oxidation process. Further, the practical application of the strategy has also been demonstrated for the oxidation of the alcoholic moiety in cholesterol.

Project description:Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is emerging as a promising therapeutic approach for clinical treatment against various cancers. However, ICB based monotherapies still suffer from low immune response rate due to the limited and exhausted tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes as well as tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment. In this work, the cell membrane with surface displaying PD-1 proteins (PD1-CM) was prepared for immune checkpoint blockade, which was further combined with multifunctional and biodegradable MnO2 for systematic and robust antitumor therapy. The MnO2-based gene-engineered nanocomposites can catalyze the decomposition of abundant H2O2 in TME to generate O2, which can promote the intratumoral infiltration of T cells, and thus improve the effect of immune checkpoint blockade by PD-1 proteins on PD1-CM. Furthermore, MnO2 in the nanocomposites can be completely degraded into Mn2+, which can catalyze the generation of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals for chemodynamic therapy, thereby further enhancing the therapeutic effect. In addition, the prepared nanocomposites possess the advantages of low cost, easy preparation and good biocompatibility, which are expected to become promising agents for combination immunotherapy.
