Project description:Extraction of commercial essential oil from several aromatic species belonging to the genus Cymbopogon results in the accumulation of huge spent aromatic waste which does not have high value application; instead, the majority is burned or disposed of to vacate fields. Open burning of spent aromatic biomass causes deterioration of the surrounding air quality. Therefore, a new protocol has been developed for chemical processing of spent biomass to obtain 5-(chloromethyl)furfural (CMF) with high selectivity (∼80%) and yields (∼26 wt% or ∼76 mol% with respect to pre-treated biomass) via refluxing in aqueous HCl in the presence of NaCl as a cheap catalyst. No black tar formation and gasification were observed in the processing of the spent aromatic biomass. Spent aromatic waste-derived CMF was further converted to 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) in good yields by a novel one pot method using iodosylbenzene (PhIO) as a reagent under mild reaction conditions.

Project description:There are two major problems in the world, fuel deficiency and environmental pollution by fossil fuels. Microalgae are regarded as one of the most feasible feedstocks for the manufacturing of biofuels and are used in the degradation of fossil fuel spills. The present study was possessed to investigate the ability of green alga Chlorella vulgaris, blue-green alga Synechococcus sp, and its consortium to grow and degrade hydrocarbon such as kerosene (k) with different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, and 1,5%), and also using algal biomasses to produce biofuel. The algal growth was estimated by optical density (O.D) at 600 nm, pigment contents such as Chlorophyll a,b carotenoid, and dry weight. The kerosene degradation was estimated by FT-IR analysis after and before the cultivation of algae and its consortium. The components of the methanol extract were determined by GC-MS spectroscopy. The results denote the best growth was determined by O.D, algae consortium with 1.5% Kerosene after ten days, meanwhile, the highest dry weight was with C. vulgaris after ten days of cultivation. The FT-IR demonstrated the algae and consortium possessed high efficacy to degrade kerosene. After 15 days of algae cultivation with 1% K, C.vulgaris produced the maximum amount of lipids (32%). The GC-MS profile of methanol extract of two algae and consortium demonstrated that Undecane was presented in high amounts, C.vulgaris (19.9%), Synechococcussp (82.16%), algae consortium (79.51%), and also were presented moderate amounts of fatty acid methyl ester in Synechococcus sp. Overall, our results indicate that a consortium of algae can absorb and remove kerosene from water, and at the same time produce biofuels like biodiesel and petroleum-based fuels.

Project description:A total of 265 fungal individuals were isolated from soils exposed to heavy oil spills in the Yadavaran oil field in Iran to discover indigenous fungal species with a high potential to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants. Morphological and molecular identification of obtained fungal species led to their assignment into 16 genera and 25 species. Alternaria spp. (78%), Fusarium spp. (5%), and Cladosporium spp. (4%) were the most common genera, along with Penicillium spp., Neocamarosporium spp., Epicoccum sp., Kotlabaea sp., Aspergillus sp., Mortierella sp., and Pleurotus sp. A preliminary screening using the DCPIP indicator revealed that approximately 35% of isolates from Alternaria, Epicoccum, Neocamarosporium, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Stachybotrys, Penicillium, and Stemphylium demonstrated promising tolerance to crude oil. The best-performing isolates (12 fungal individuals) were further investigated for their capacity to mineralize a mixture of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) for 47 days, quantified by GC-MS. Eventually, two top-performing isolates, namely 5c-12 (Alternaria tenuissima) and 3b-1 (Epicoccum nigrum), were applied to petroleum-contaminated soil. The GC-MS analysis showed that 60 days after inoculation, these isolates successfully degraded more than 70% of the long-chain hydrocarbons in the soil, including C8-C16 n-alkanes, C36 n-alkane, and Pristane. This study introduces two fungal species (5c-12 and 3b-1) with high potential for biodegrading petroleum compounds and PAHs, offering promising prospects for the decontamination of oil-contaminated soil.

Project description:This work describes the preparation of an analytical microextraction sorbent using a simple and versatile sol-gel hybrid composite, i.e., aramid oligomers wrapping multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) covalently bonded to a porous silica network. To overcome the inherent shortcomings of the CNTs' solubility and dispersion in both organic phases and in the sol-gel solution, the outer surface of the CNTs was initially functionalized with carboxylic acid groups and then reacted with both aramid oligomers and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). The obtained sorbent was characterized by FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Using sol-gel chemistry, the functionalized CNTs were coated onto SPME fibers and used in conjunction with GC-MS for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and soil samples. Excellent repeatability (run-to-run RSD% ∼ 8) and reproducibility (fiber-to-fiber RSD% ∼ 6) were achieved in addition to low LODs (0.10-0.30 ng mL-1) and noticeable recovery%. The present method of sorbent preparation led to enhanced thermal and chemical stabilities, a long sorbent lifetime and good affinity towards PAHs. Moreover, the present sorbent enhanced the extraction capability by more than 30% compared to that of commercially available PDMS counterparts.

Project description:Creosote, a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was and is a wood impregnate of widespread use. Over the years the accumulation of creosote PAHs in soils and freshwaters has increased, causing a threat to ecosystems. The combined ozonation-biodegradation process is proposed to improve the slow and inefficient biodegradation of creosote hydrocarbons. The impact of different ozonation methods on the biodegradation of model wastewater was evaluated. The biodegradation rate, the changes in chemical oxygen demand, and the total organic carbon concentration were measured in order to provide insight into the process. Moreover, the bacteria consortium activity was monitored during the biodegradation step of the process. The collected data confirmed the research hypothesis, which was that the hybrid method can improve biodegradation. The pre-ozonation followed by inoculation with a bacteria consortium resulted in a significant increase in the biodegradation rate. It allows for the shortening of the time required for the consortium to reach maximum degradation effectiveness and cell activity. Hence, the study gives an important and useful perspective for the decontamination of creosote-polluted ecosystems.

Project description:Assessing the potential carcinogenicity of human toxins represents an ongoing challenge. Chronic rodent bioassays predict human cancer risk with limited reliability, and are expensive and time-consuming. To identify alternative prediction methods, we evaluated a transcriptomics-based human in vitro model to classify carcinogens by their modes of action. The aim of this study was to determine the transcriptomic response and identify specific molecular signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be used as predictors of carcinogenicity of environmental toxins in human in vitro systems. We found that characteristic molecular signatures facilitate identification and prediction of carcinogens.

Project description:5-Acetoxymethyl-2-furfural (AMF) was prepared from D-fructose via 1,6-diacetylfructose (DAF) through a simple two-step reaction pathway. Immobilized enzyme (Novozym 435) was found to be the best enzymatic catalyst for the trans-esterification step (yielding 94.6% DAF). In the dehydration step, while soluble H2SO4 was found to be the best acidic catalyst (yielding 86.6% AMF), we opted to utilize heterogeneous cation exchange resin (Amberlyst 15) together with recyclable industrial solvents (1,4-dioxane) for a more sustainable AMF synthesis procedure. Although the total yield of AMF was a little lower, both the enzyme and the solid acid catalyst could be recycled for five cycles without a significant loss of activity, which has a major contribution to the cost-efficient aspect of the entire process.

Project description:This study measures polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compositions in particulate matter emissions from residential cookstoves. A variety of fuel and cookstove combinations are investigated, including: (i) liquid petroleum gas (LPG), (ii) kerosene in a wick stove, (iii) wood (10 and 30% moisture content on a wet basis) in a forced-draft fan stove, and (iv) wood in a natural-draft rocket cookstove. The wood burning in the natural-draft stove had the highest PAH emissions followed by the wood combustion in the forced-draft stove and kerosene burning. LPG combustion has the highest thermal efficiency (∼57%) and the lowest PAH emissions per unit fuel energy, resulting in the lowest PAH emissions per useful energy delivered (in the unit of megajoule delivered, MJd). Compared with the wood combustion emissions, LPG burning also emits a lower fraction of higher molecular weight PAHs. In rural regions where LPG and kerosene are unavailable or unaffordable, the forced-draft fan stove is expected to be an alternative because its benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) emission factor (5.17-8.24 μg B[a]P/MJd) and emission rate (0.522-0.583 μg B[a]P/min) are similar to those of kerosene burning (5.36 μg B[a]P/MJd and 0.452 μg B[a]P/min). Relatively large PAH emission variability for LPG suggests a need for additional future tests to identify the major factors influencing these combustion emissions. These future tests should also account for different LPG fuel formulations and stove burner types.
