Effects of Season, Habitat, and Host Characteristics on Ectoparasites of Wild Rodents in a Mosaic Rural Landscape.

ABSTRACT: Despite the large number of studies on rodent ectoparasites-most of them vectors of epidemiologically important pathogens-infestation patterns remain poorly understood in various ecological contexts, such as the highly patchy agricultural landscapes. We aimed to relate the infestation of rodents to temporal, habitat, and host variables. We assessed the difference in parasite prevalence and mean abundance depending on host sex, age, and body weight, season, and land use intensity. Furthermore, we analysed the effect of host species abundance and the differential responses of parasites in main and minor host species. The field survey was conducted in a rural landscape in southern Transylvania (Romania) between June and September 2010-2011. We live-trapped small mammals, collected the ticks and fleas, and recorded the presence of lice and mites. Overall, we found the same infestation patterns largely reported in the literature: higher prevalence and mean abundance in heavier adult males, significant seasonality and differences among host species, and evidence of the dilution effect. The uniqueness of our study system was the negative effect of the land use intensity on the prevalence and mean abundance of parasites, explained by the highly patchy mosaic landscape.

Project description:BackgroundWild rodents and shrews serve as vital sentinel species for monitoring zoonotic viruses due to their close interaction with human environments and role as natural reservoirs for diverse viral pathogens. Although several studies have explored viral diversity and assessed pathogenic risks in wild rodents and shrews, the full extent of this diversity remains insufficiently understood.ResultsWe conducted high-throughput sequencing on 1113 small mammals collected from 97 townships across seven cities in Hubei Province during 2021, supplemented by publicly available data from 2014 and 2016-2017. This analysis revealed a diverse array of novel viruses spanning several viral families, including Arenaviridae, Hepeviridae, Chuviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Arteriviridae, Nodaviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Dicistroviridae, Astroviridae, and Picornaviridae. Phylogenetic analysis and genome structure characterization highlighted the discovery of these novel viruses, enhancing our understanding of viral diversity and evolution. Key host species such as Chodsigoa smithii, Anourosorex squamipes, Niviventer niviventer, and Apodemus agrarius were identified as significant contributors to viral circulation, making them crucial targets for future surveillance. Additionally, the central Plain of Hubei Province was recognized as a critical geographic hub for viral transmission, underscoring its importance in monitoring and controlling viral spread. Machine learning models were employed to assess the zoonotic potential of the identified viruses, revealing that families such as Arenaviridae, Coronaviridae, Hantaviridae, Arteriviridae, Astroviridae, Hepeviridae, Lispiviridae, Nairoviridae, Nodaviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Picornaviridae, and Picobirnaviridae possess a high likelihood of infecting humans. Notably, rodent-derived Rotavirus A, HTNV, and SEOV displayed almost complete amino acid identity with their human-derived counterparts, indicating a significant risk for human outbreaks.ConclusionThis study provides a comprehensive virome landscape for wild rodents and shrews in Central China, highlighting novel viruses and the critical roles of specific host species and regions in viral transmission. By identifying key species and hotspots for viral spread and assessing the zoonotic potential of the discovered viruses, this research enhances our understanding of virus ecology and the factors driving zoonotic disease emergence. The findings emphasize the need for targeted surveillance and proactive strategies to mitigate the risks of zoonotic spillovers, contributing to global public health preparedness. Video Abstract.

Project description:Parasites are important component of communities in a forest ecosystem with profound effects on trophic interactions such as food web. Modification of the forest structure (e.g. changes in species composition and abundance of key species) can have a strong impact on the occurrence, diversity, and abundance of parasites, with subsequent repercussions for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we compared the occurrence and abundance of wild rodents' ectoparasites from forest sites invaded and uninvaded by an invasive tree, Maesopsis eminii in Amani Nature Forest Reserve, Tanzania. Three large plots (40 m × 100 m) were randomly established in each forest sites invaded and uninvaded by M. eminii. In each plot, 50 Sherman traps were systematically placed at 10 m interval for capturing wild rodents through a capture-mark-recapture technique. Wilcox rank sum test was used to compare for differences in the abundance of infested rodents and ectoparasites between the invaded and uninvaded forest sites. A total of 297 individual rodents were captured and screened for ectoparasites, including 174 rodents from uninvaded forest site and 123 rodents from invaded forest site. The number of infested rodents were significantly (W = 8592, P < 0.001) greater in uninvaded forest site (66.27%) than in the invaded forest site (36.2%). Furthermore, a significant greater number of Echinolaelaps echidninus (W = 1849, P < 0.01) and Dinopsyllus ellobius (W = 2800.5, P < 0.05) ectoparasites were found in uninvaded as compared to the invaded forest sites. The results of this study suggest that the invasion and dominance by, M. eminii in Amani Nature Reserve has created unfavorable conditions for rodents and ectoparasites and therefore impacting the diversity and function of the forest ecosystem. We recommend prevention of further introduction of the M. eminii outside their natural range and mitigating the impact of the established M. eminii in Amani Forest Nature Reserve.

Project description:Effective landscape-scale management of source-sink deer populations will be strengthened by understanding whether local variation in habitat quality drives heterogeneity in productivity. We related female roe deer Capreolus capreolus fecundity and body mass to habitat composition and landscape context, separately for adults and yearlings, using multi-model inference (MMI) applied to a large sample of individuals (yearlings: fecundity = 202, body mass = 395; adults: fecundity = 908, body mass = 1669) culled during 2002-2015 from an extensive (195 km2) heterogeneous forest landscape. Adults were heavier (inter-quartile, IQ, effect size = +0.5kg) when culled in buffers comprising more arable lands while contrary to our prediction no effects on body mass of grassland, young forest or access to vegetation on calcareous soil were found. Heavier adults were more fertile (IQ effect size, +12% probability of having two embryos instead of one or zero). Counter-intuitively, adults with greater access to arable lands were less fecund (IQ effect of arable: -7% probability of having two embryos, instead of one or zero), and even accounting for greater body mass of adults with access to arable, their modelled fecundity was similar to or lower than that of adults in the forest interior. In contrast, effects of grassland, young forest and calcareous soil did not receive support. Yearling body mass had an effect on fecundity twice that found in adults (+23% probability of having one additional embryo), but yearling body mass and fecundity were not affected by any candidate habitat or landscape variables. Effect of arable lands on body mass and fecundity were small, with little variance explained (Coefficient of Variation of predicted fecundity across forest sub-regions = 0.03 for adults). More variance in fecundity was attributed to other differences between forest management sub-regions (modelled as random effects), suggesting other factors might be important. When analysing source-sink population dynamics to support management, an average value of fecundity can be appropriate across a heterogeneous forest landscape.
