The Effects of Suspension Training on Dynamic, Static Balance, and Stability: An Interventional Study.

ABSTRACT: Background and Objectives: While suspension training devices are increasingly gaining popularity, there is limited evidence on their effects on balance, and no comprehensive assessment has been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 9-session suspension training program on dynamic and static balance, stability, and functional performance. Materials and Methods: A total of forty-eight healthy adults, aged between 18 and 30, participated in a 9-session suspension training program. The program included exercises targeting upper and lower body muscles as well as core muscles. Balance was comprehensively assessed using various dynamic balance tests, including the Y Balance Test (YBT) as the primary outcome, single-leg Emery test, and sideways jumping test. Static balance was evaluated through the monopedal and bipedal Romberg tests. Changes from baseline were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test. Results: Thirty-nine participants (mean age: 21.8 years) completed the intervention. The intervention resulted in significant improvements in YBT, jumping sideways, Emery, and 30s-SST scores (p < 0.001). Platform measures indicated enhanced monopedal stability (p < 0.001) but did not show a significant effect on bipedal stability (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Suspension training is a safe and feasible method for improving dynamic balance and functional performance in healthy, untrained young adults. However, it does not appear to significantly impact the ability to maintain a static posture while standing.

Project description:Badminton is a racket sport that requires a wide variety of proficient postural changes and moves including jumps, lunges, quick changes in direction, and rapid arm movements. Efficient movement in badminton court entails reaching the shuttlecock in as few steps as possible while maintaining good balance. Balance training is an unexplored component in badminton training protocol, though balance is important in injury prevention and performance enhancement. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of balance training on sport-specific footwork performance of school-level competitive badminton players. We conducted a controlled trial involving 20 male badminton players (age 12.85±0.67 years). Participants were stratified according to their level of performance in the game, and payers from each stratum were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. The control group (n = 8) engaged in 2 hours of ordinary badminton training, whereas the intervention group (n = 12) underwent 30 minutes of balance training followed by 1 hour and 30 minutes of ordinary badminton training, 2 days per week for 8 weeks. We tested the participants at baseline and after 8 weeks for static balance (Unipedal Stance Test), dynamic balance (Star Excursion Balance Test) and sport-specific footwork performance (shuttle run time and push-off times during stroke-play). On pre- vs. post-intervention comparisons, both groups improved in static balance (eyes opened) (p<0.05), but only the intervention group improved in dynamic balance (p = 0.036) and shuttle-run time (p = 0.020). The intervention group also improved push-off times for front forehand (p = 0.045), side forehand (p = 0.029) and rear around-the-head shots (p = 0.041). These improvements in push-off times varied between 19-36% of the baseline. None of the footwork performance measures significantly improved in the control group. Our findings indicate that incorporating a 30-minute balance training program into a regular training schedule improves dynamic balance, and on-court sport-specific footwork performance in adolescent competitive badminton players, after 8 weeks of training.

Project description:Falls are the second most frequent cause of injury in the elderly. Physiological processes associated with aging affect the elderly's ability to respond to unexpected balance perturbations, leading to increased fall risk. Every year, approximately 30% of adults, 65 years and older, experiences at least one fall. Investigating the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the control of static and dynamic balance in the elderly is an emerging research area. The study aimed to identify cortical and muscular correlates during static and dynamic balance tests in a cohort of young and old healthy adults. We recorded cortical and muscular activity in nine elderly and eight younger healthy participants during an upright stance task in static and dynamic (core board) conditions. To simulate real-life dual-task postural control conditions, the second set of experiments incorporated an oddball visual task. We observed higher electroencephalographic (EEG) delta rhythm over the anterior cortex in the elderly and more diffused fast rhythms (i.e., alpha, beta, gamma) in younger participants during the static balance tests. When adding a visual oddball, the elderly displayed an increase in theta activation over the sensorimotor and occipital cortices. During the dynamic balance tests, the elderly showed the recruitment of sensorimotor areas and increased muscle activity level, suggesting a preferential motor strategy for postural control. This strategy was even more prominent during the oddball task. Younger participants showed reduced cortical and muscular activity compared to the elderly, with the noteworthy difference of a preferential activation of occipital areas that increased during the oddball task. These results support the hypothesis that different strategies are used by the elderly compared to younger adults during postural tasks, particularly when postural and cognitive tasks are combined. The knowledge gained in this study could inform the development of age-specific rehabilitative and assistive interventions.

Project description:The primary inquiry of this study was to determine if exergaming is more effective than balance training in improving dynamic postural control during jump-landing movements among athletes with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Additionally, the study aimed to compare the effectiveness of these interventions on clinical and psychological outcomes. This study was a randomized, single-blinded, controlled trial in which participants were assigned to either an exergaming group or a balance training group. Outcome measures were assessed before, after, and one month following the intervention. Primary outcomes included the stability index (SI) and time to stabilization (TTS) in the anteroposterior (AP), mediolateral (ML), and vertical (V) directions, the dynamic postural stability index (DPSI), and the resultant vector time to stabilization (RVTTS). Secondary outcomes included performance, fear of movement, and perceived ankle instability, measured using the side-hop test, the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), respectively. Results indicated a significant decrease in ML SI in both groups one month after treatment compared to before and after treatment (P = 0.013 and P<0.001, respectively). Additionally, one-way ANCOVA revealed a significant difference between the groups post-treatment (F(1,31) = 6.011, P = 0.020, η2 = 0.162) and one month post-treatment (F(1,31) = 4.889, P = 0.035, η2 = 0.136), with ML SI being significantly lower in the exergaming group than the balance training group at both time points. In both group, the DPSI also decreased significantly one month post-treatment compared to before and after treatment (P = 0.040 and P = 0.018, respectively). Both groups showed improvements in performance, severity of perceived ankle instability, and fear of movement. Thus, the study concluded that both exergaming and balance training effectively improved postural control during jump-landing, with exergaming showing superior performance in the ML direction both after and one month post-treatment. In terms of clinical and psychological outcomes, both interventions were effective, with neither showing superiority over the other.
