Osteometric data of Avian Fauna of Armenia: A baseline for zoologists and archaeozoologists.

ABSTRACT: Modern bird skeletons stored in the faunal collections of the Institute of Zoology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology NAS Armenia constitute a source material for this dataset. The osteological material in the scientific collections has been accumulated in the course of faunal studies in Armenia over the span of 60 years. The osteometric dataset sheds light on the country's species diversity and includes cranial and postcranial measurements (carpometacarpus, humerus, tibia, femur, tarsometatarsus, radius and ulna) of 141 bird skeletons which belong to 81 bird species, 34 families and 17 orders. Bird skeletons have been collected by means of specimen collection from the wild for scientific study prior to 1990s when the practice was common and recovered opportunistically after 1990s from birds found dead through natural causes and incidents. Recent bird skeletons (bones) serve as a unique comparative resource for zoological research and for identifying bird bones recovered from archaeological and natural deposits.

Project description:Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe a number of anatomical reference points which can be used to measure mandibular morphology and assess the degree of mandibular symmetry in a group of normal cats. Comparisons were then made between cats to evaluate correlations between morphological measurements and degree of inter-cat variation. This will provide data valuable evaluating and developing techniques for caudal mandibular fracture repair. Methods: Twenty-seven mixed breed cats (26 Domestic Shorthaired and 1 Domestic Longhaired) with no history of head trauma, intact undamaged mandibles, both mandibular fourth premolars and first molars present which had a full skull CT scan were included in this study. Anatomical reference points were defined on maximum intensity projections of multiplanar reconstruction of the mandibles and measurements taken. The ratios between paired right and left measurements, and the ratio of jaw widths at the coronoid process and mandibular foramen were calculated. All analyses were performed using R version 3.3.3 and the multcomp library. Results: None of the right:left ratios were detected as being significantly different from 1 and the coefficient of variation values were all very small showing that when cats deviate from the mean ratio they do so by only a small amount. Measurements analyzed to determine how consistent individual measurements were between cats showed that the most consistent measurement was the lateral ramus inclination angle. The least consistent measurements were ramus height and jaw width at the mental foramen. The correlation between pairs of measurements of the right and left ramus was analyzed and demonstrated a strong correlation between the height, width and length of the ramus. Conclusions: This study has demonstrated a low level of asymmetry between contralateral mandibles in cats, a high level of consistency in the dimensions of mandibles between cats and a strong correlation between the height, width and length of the ramus.

Project description:Orthoptera are capable of threat of agriculture, human health and resists to all pesticides used. This problem is become an objectif of many research's. Pesticide resistance is the adaptation of insects to this materials resulting in decreased susceptibility to that chemical. In other hand, insects develop a resistance through natural selection such chemically transformation, physiological phenomena and genetic. In our study, natural chitin was extracted from cuticle of orthoptera insect (southern of Algeria) using a chemical strategy consists on hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. The average yield of extracted chitin (96.95% w) indicates that the cuticles of orthoptera are a rich source of chitin. Cuticle exhibit a heterogeneous morphology characterized by a compact structure with well-defined fibrous. For extracted chitin and after demineralization, we can appreciate important changes in the surface of material. We observed round shaped black spots indicated that they are composed almost exclusively by K2O and CaO (cuticle) in the other hand we observed several white taches behind black spots, here we suggest that white taches present chitin extracted. The most resistant orthoptera are the ones to survive and transform their properties by chemical process such as transformation of chitin to chitosan and physiological development such as age. In this study, we have found that the first generation has a great resistance to insecticides. After insecticide application we observed a descendant's resistance decreased a larger because sensitive insects have been selectively killed. After repeated applications resistant insects may comprise the minority. Finally we can said, insecticide resistance can be found in many types and we can conclude that physiological resistance and chemical resistance coexist together and cannot separate. In the physiological resistance, the insect populations may develop the ability to avoid or reduce lethal insecticide exposure. In contrast, chemical resistance refers to modification mechanisms, including reduced cuticle penetration and decreased or increased target site sensitivity. The extracted chitin sample and chitosan were characterized by several characterizations such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy SEM, FTIR and 1HRMN spectroscopy.
