Project description:This study had two main thematic aims: first, to determine the factors that influenced the choice of international students at China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) to consider China as a study destination; second, to determine the career preferences of international students upon completion of their various programs of study. As a cross-sectional study, relevant data were collected from undergraduate pharmacy students and postgraduates using a self-administered questionnaire. On the whole, the five most important pull factors that influenced the choice of China as the study destination for the respondents were: (1) quality of education, (2) quality of academic staff, (3) security, (4) desire to obtain a certificate from a foreign country and (5) availability of scholarship opportunities. With respect to the career choices, the top three career preferences of the international students were: (1) to work in the pharmaceutical industry (i.e., pharmaceutical manufacturing companies), (2) to practice clinical pharmacy and (3) to seek employment opportunities outside their countries. This study provides additional details on why China has gradually become a study destination of choice for international students. The career preferences of students could be useful in the design of academic programs that could meet their job aspirations.

Project description:BackgroundInternational students frequently face difficulties that are specific to the typical college experience, in addition to facing other factors of acculturative stress, including cultural differences, language barriers, and comfortability in accommodation.AimThe study aims to measure the prevalence of acculturative stress among first-year international students enrolled at Faculty of Medicine in an Egyptian University and aims to reveal the factors that are associated with acculturative stress in these students.MethodologyA cross-sectional study was conducted on 422 international students in the academic year 2021-2022, using the Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students (ASSIS). The factors associated with acculturative stress were examined using the following criteria: comfort in accommodation, student adjustment to college, language proficiency, and academic pressure.ResultsThis study showed that 28.7% of the international students were "above the warning sign" of acculturative stress (above 109). The major stressors of acculturative stress among international students were the non-specific concerns, homesickness, and perceived discrimination, while the least reported stressors were fear and guilt. International students who scored in the "above the warning sign" in the (ASSIS) were mostly females (35.3%) and non-Arab students (37.8%). Having a friend or a family member living in Egypt significantly reduced the level of acculturative stress. Moreover, the ASSIS total score showed a negative correlation with the scores for overall language proficiency, comfort in accommodation, academic adjustment, and student adjustment to college.ConclusionAcculturative stress among the studied groups is influenced by several factors, including nationality, English and Arabic language proficiency, academic adjustment, and comfort of living. That being said, the most significant stressor is the country of origin, which is defined in terms of nationality or language proficiency. Consequently, resources that ensure the sustainability and growth of international students throughout their educational process must be made available to a multicultural environment in order to support and retain those students.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.

Project description:ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to identify and compare the ergonomic risk factors of year 4 and year 5 dental students attending International Medical University.MethodsThis was an exploratory, observational study evaluating ergonomic risk factors among year 4 and year 5 dental students, with a total of 89 participants. The students' ergonomic risk components were evaluated using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) worksheet. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the RULA scores, and the Mann-Whitney U test served to determine the difference of ergonomic risk between year 4 and year 5 dental students.ResultsThe descriptive analysis showed that the participants' (N = 89) median final RULA score was 6.00 (standard deviation = 0.716). One-year difference in the years of clinical practice did not produce a significant difference in the final RULA score (U = 913.0, P = 0.49). The final RULA scores showed year 4 dental students had a higher mean ranking (year 4 = 46.65, year 5 = 43.23). Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U test indicated that this was not statistically significant (U = 913.0, P = 0.49).ConclusionThe descriptive analysis showed that the final RULA score of the participants indicated that the participants were in a high-risk category for experiencing work-related musculoskeletal disorders due to poor ergonomics. Contributing physical factors included working in asymmetric, awkward, and static positions in a confined workspace, infrequent use of dental loupes, and utilization of dental chairs that were not ergonomically appropriate.

Project description:IntroductionAppropriate management of malaria demands early health seeking behaviour upon suspicion of malaria-like symptoms. This study examined malaria treatment seeking behaviour and associated factors among international students at University of Ghana.MethodsThe study used a cross-sectional and quantitative approach. Data collection was undertaken using a structured questionnaire administered on a random sample of 264 international students. Data obtained on malaria treatment and factors influencing treatment behaviors were analyzed using IBM, SPSS Statistics version 22. Associations between individual characteristics and Malaria treatment seeking behavior was assessed by Pearson Chi-square(X2) test of independence. Binary logistic regression model was built using a backwards Wald approach, with variables retained at Wald p-value <0.05.ResultsThe findings show that 35% of the respondents obtained self-prescribed antimalarial at their utmost first choice of Malaria treatment. At bivariate level, a significant relationship between Malaria health-care seeking behaviour and:- Respondents continent, X2(1, N = 264) = 7.936, p = .005; Service accessibility, X2(1, N = 264) = 7.624, p = .006; Wait time, X2(1, N = 264) = 22.514, p <0.001; Treatment cost, X2(1, N = 264) = 97.160, p <0.001; Health insurance, X2(1, N = 264) = 5.837, p = 0.016, and Perceived staff attitude, X2(1, N = 264) = 18.557, p < 0.001. At multivariable analysis, inappropriate malaria health seeking behaviours was associated with low perceived service accessibility as (≥30mins) (aOR = 6.67; p<0.001), perceived long wait time (≥30mins), (aOR = 5.94; p = 0.015), perceived treatment cost affordability (<15 GHC) (aOR = 19.88; p<0.001) and age group: -34-41years (aOR = 8.83; p<0.001).ConclusionThere were widespread inappropriate health-care seeking behavior for Malaria treatment among international students. Improving accessibility to malaria treatment services, reducing wait time at health facilities and the treatment cost will address inappropriate malaria treatment health seeking behaviours among the international students.

Project description:Objective: The following article presents OFIF, a project that has been running at the medical faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (LMU) since 2013. International students of medicine often lag behind their fellow domestic students in terms of language ability and communication skills. To compensate, OFIF offers communication skills courses with an emphasis on exam preparation. Below, we will discuss the project's success, challenges and future opportunities. Methods: In their daily academic routine, communication presents one of the greatest challenges for international students of medicine. With the aid of case scenarios and activities from clinical practice, the project courses teach strategies for effective communication. The methodical concept of the OFIF training is based on the six levels of learning of the revised edition of Bloom's taxonomy. Results: Since 2013, more than 40 trainings and classes for international medical students have been offered. In the winter term of 2017/18, 49 students representing all clinical semesters participated in the OFIF activities. An evaluation of the training classes consistently yielded positive results (95 % of the items were given a score between 9 and 10, on a scale from 1 to 10.) Conclusions: Both the amount of interest (as expressed by the number of actively participating students) and the high percentage of positive evaluations consistently demonstrate that the didactical concept underlying OFIF is useful and could serve as a best practice example for similar projects at other institutions. On the other hand, the 49 participants from all clinical semesters represented but 10 % of the total population of international students in the winter term of 2017/18. Further research examining the concrete effects of OFIF on the academic success of international students at the LMU is therefore desirable.

Project description:BackgroundIn our previous study, international university students showed a significantly higher dental caries morbidity rate than domestic students. On the other hand, the periodontal health status of international university students has not been clarified yet. In this study, we compared the periodontal health status of international and domestic university students in Japan.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of the clinical data of the university students that visited a dental clinic in the division for health service promotion at a university in Tokyo for screening between April 2017 and March 2019. Bleeding on probing (BOP), calculus deposition and probing pocket depth (PPD) were investigated.ResultsThe records of 231 university students (79 international and 152 domestic university students) were analyzed; 84.8% of international students were from Asian countries (n = 67). The international university students showed a higher percentage of BOP than domestic students (49.4% and 34.2%, respectively: p < 0.05) and they showed more extensive calculus deposition (calculus grading score [CGS]) than domestic university students (1.68 and 1.43, respectively: p < 0.01), despite no significant difference in PPD.ConclusionsThe current study shows that international university students have poorer periodontal health than domestic students in Japan, even though the result might include many uncertainties and possible biases. To prevent severe periodontitis in the future, regular checkups and thorough oral health care are essential for the university students, especially those from foreign countries.

Project description:AimThis study aims to investigate international students' perspectives on service quality and analyse factors contributing to the perceived service quality of the university health centre.BackgroundInternational students are at increased risk of experiencing poor mental health, isolation from families and cultures, language barriers, financial stress and academic pressures. It is important that universities support international students to enable them to complete their degrees and reach their desired level of achievement and performance. One of the supports required by international students is the availability of healthcare services. Therefore, improving the quality of services to meet international students' requirements, including healthcare services, is essential.MethodsA three-phase exploratory sequential mixed methods design was used. Phase 1 aims to explore international students' perceptions of primary healthcare quality by conducting in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Phase 2 is to form questionnaire items based on the results of the qualitative study. The questionnaire is subject to pilot testing to measure validity and reliability. Phase 3 analyses factors influencing international students' perceived primary healthcare service quality. Multiple regression was used to analyse factors contributing to the perceived service quality of international students.FindingsThe qualitative strand revealed five major themes representing the study participants' thoughts about the quality of services in the university healthcare context. Perceived quality attributes identified in this study were primarily empathy, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and safety. The quantitative strand found that 35.57% of participants consider the perceived quality of the centre as good. The highest and lowest service quality attributes were related to safety and efficiency, with a score of 21.12 ± 3.58 and 19.57 ± 4.34, respectively. The multiple linear regression analyses showed that PhD students from Health Faculty and Scholarship awardees were significantly associated with the perceived quality of healthcare services. Thus, the university management needs to improve service quality considering the diversity of international students' socio-demographic characteristics.

Project description:Since the end of 2019, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered widespread fear and anxiety across China. Nearly half a million international students pursuing their studies in Chinese universities have also been exposed to the psychological distress triggered by the unfolding crisis. In addition to government and medical institutions' efforts, universities have also endeavored to mitigate concerns among these students under quarantine on campus by providing reliable information as well as medical, monetary, and emotional support. In this study, international students' trust in university management teams and its role in remediating their anxieties were evaluated using an online survey conducted after 10 days of the lockdown of Wuhan, China. The empirical analysis incorporates quantitative data from 180 international students. Ordinary least squares regression and probit regression were used in the analysis with the non-robust and robust models. The study found students' perception of trust in university management to be negatively associated with their anxiety levels. Additionally, having trust in university management was found to positively influence students' commitment to the self-quarantine guidelines. These results reinforce the important role of universities and their relationship with international students during public health emergencies.

Project description:The global COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the mental well-being of university students, but little attention has been given to international students, who may have a unique experience and perspective. The aim of this study was to explore the views of international students and university staff towards COVID-19 restrictions, self-isolation, their well-being, and support needs, through eight online focus groups with international students (n = 29) and semi-structured interviews with university staff (n = 17) at a higher education institution in England. Data were analysed using an inductive thematic approach, revealing three key themes and six subthemes: (1) practical, academic, and psychological challenges faced during self-isolation and the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) coping strategies to self-isolation and life during the pandemic; and (3) views on further support needed for international students. International students faced practical, academic, and psychological challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly relating to the rapid transition to online learning and the impact of social restrictions on integration with peers and well-being. Online social connections with peers, family, or new acquaintances reduced feelings of isolation and encouraged involvement in university life. Despite raising mental health concerns, most international students did not access mental health support services. Staff related this to perceived stigma around mental health in certain cultural groups. In conclusion, international students experienced specific practical and emotional challenges during the pandemic, and are at risk of mental ill-health, but may not actively seek out support from university services. Proactive and personalised approaches to student support will be important for positive student experiences and the retention of students who are studying abroad in the UK higher education system.

Project description:The aim of the present study was two-fold: Firstly, to estimate the prevalence of psychological distress among international students at a Hungarian university two years after the COVID-19 outbreak; and secondly, to identify its demographic and socioeconomic factors, with special regard to the students' food-security status. A cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire was carried out from 27 March to 3 July 2022 among international students at the University of Debrecen. The questionnaire included information on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, food-security status (six-item United States Department of Agriculture Food Security Survey Module (USDA-FSSM)), and psychological distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21)). Bivariate analysis was conducted to examine the potential associations between demographic/socioeconomic factors and psychological distress. Additionally, multiple logistic regression was employed to further analyze these associations. Of 398 participants, 42.2%, 48.7%, and 29.4% reported mild to extremely severe depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively. The ages 18-24 (AOR = 2.619; 95% CI: 1.206-5.689) and 25-29 (AOR = 2.663; 95% CI: 1.159-6.119), reporting a low perception of health status (AOR = 1.726; 95% CI: 1.081-2.755), and being food insecure (AOR = 1.984; 95% CI: 1.274-3.090) were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Being female (AOR = 1.674; 95% CI: 1.090-2.571), reporting a low perception of health status (AOR = 1.736; 95% CI: 1.098-2.744), and being food insecure (AOR = 2.047; 95% CI: 1.327-3.157) were significantly associated with anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, being female (AOR = 1.702; 95% CI: 1.026-2.824)), living with roommates (AOR = 1.977; 95% CI: 1.075-3.635), reporting a low perception of health status (AOR = 2.840; 95% CI: 1.678-4.807), and being food insecure (AOR = 2.295; 95% CI:1.398-3.767) were significantly associated with symptoms of stress. Psychosocial programs combined with strategies to alleviate food insecurity are required to enhance international students' mental health and well-being.
