ABSTRACT: Recent studies have indicated that many challenges exist in implementing open user innovation in SMEs. As a more advanced paradigm of traditional innovation, open user innovations are developed by users and other stakeholders who share tasks and costs of innovation development and then freely unwrap results. The work presented in this article examines the main factors driving open user innovation in SMEs, operating in industries with low investment in R&D. The work accounts for differences in the economics categorisation of the countries in which the organisations operate in (developing vs developed), and how that impacts various factors related to open user innovation adoption. The findings of this study indicate that differences between Australian and Kuwaiti SMEs exist, in terms of perceptions of success, benefits, challenges, and ease of implementation related to open user innovation. In addition, some differences are observed in the drivers for sensing open user innovation opportunities between the two countries examined.

Project description:In contemporary times, women have gained recognition as accomplished entrepreneurs who make substantial contributions to economic development by virtue of their perseverance, excellence, and expertise. The concept of women's entrepreneurship encompasses the undertaking of creating novel enterprises, with the individual's intention to assume the role of an entrepreneur serving as a pivotal factor in this developmental trajectory. The underperformance of female entrepreneurs is alarming for developing nations. Purposefully, exploring the factors correlating female entrepreneurship intention is highly regarded, and a timely research is needed, thus this study explores the context of Pakistan considered a developing country. Hence, we collected data from listed small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating in the country by means of structured questionnaires. Using SPSS and Smart-PLS software, we developed a conceptual model and performed analysis. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constitutes a robust psychological framework applicable to understanding and anticipating various human behaviors, first and foremost, entrepreneurial intention. When applying the TPB to the area of women's entrepreneurial intentions, several crucial factors come into play, including motivation, self-confidence, personality traits, and adaptability. The results indicate that factors such as the will to start a business, willingness, personality traits, adaptability, and background factors, including education and experience, impact entrepreneurial intention. Also, their professional careers make them able to launch a business. Based on our findings, we recommend that the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA), policymakers, and practitioners may provide various incentives and support systems related to these factors to encourage their own company launches. Prior research has examined various factors that impact the entrepreneurial mindsets of women. However, our study focuses specifically on closely associated aspects that have received limited attention, particularly in the context of Pakistan. This study makes a valuable contribution to the extant body of literature by providing empirical evidence in the aforementioned domains.

Project description:ObjectiveFor leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grappling with diverse tasks and stressors, personality functioning can play a key role on stress perception and building and managing professional relationships. We investigated the relationship between SME leaders' personality functioning on the dimensions of self-perception and self-regulation on perceived stress reactivity (PSR), and symptoms of anxiety and depression.MethodsA cross-sectional sub analysis of a multi-centre RCT project was performed. A sample of N = 174 SME leaders from various sectors in southern Germany were examined on their self-rated levels of personality functioning (OPD-SQ), involving self-perception (facets: self-reflection, affect differentiation, sense of identity) and self-reflection (facets: impulse control, affect tolerance, regulation of self-esteem), with higher scores indicating lower levels of personality functioning. The outcome variables were perceived stress reactivity (PSRS) and symptoms of depression and anxiety (HADS).ResultsThe mean score for symptoms of anxiety was M = 6.13 (SD = 3.34), depression M = 4.40 (SD = 3.35), and for PSRS M = 21.39 (SD = 8.04). The mean sum score for self-perception was M = 7.71 (SD = 7.19) and for self-regulation M = 10.50 (SD = 7.09). The results of three regression models showed that higher scores for affect differentiation (rsp = .13), impulse control (rsp = .14) and regulation of self-esteem (rsp = .29) were associated with higher scores for PSR. Higher scores for affect differentiation (rsp = .17) and affect tolerance (rsp = .20) were significantly associated with higher scores for anxiety. A higher score for regulation of self-esteem (rsp = .17) was associated with higher depression scores.ConclusionThis study highlights the association between core dimensions of SME leaders' personality functioning and mental distress. The findings can be applied on interventions and health promotion and the establishment of high-quality professional relationships and leadership skills.

Project description:Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) significantly contribute to national economic development worldwide. However, numerous factors affect the growth of SMEs, particularly in developing economies. Due to the complexity of these variables, it is challenging to determine where to begin improving SMEs. This study aims to identify and analyse the factors that hinder the overall performance of (SMEs) to gain insights into the principal variables constituting problems. A literature survey identified and abstracted 36 variables that influence SME growth. A structured questionnaire was created using the variables and administered to the respondents in the SME sector. We collated and converted the respondents' scores into primary data. The data was analysed using Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance (W) and Principal Component Analytics (PCA) tools, and the results were presented. The result of Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance analysis was (W) = 0.52, indicating that the judges strongly agree that the 36 variables affect SME growth. The PCA analysis identified the critical variables affecting SME growth. These variables, along with their corresponding factor loading, include Marketing information = 0.80, Cost of transportation = 0.81, Information technology = 0.83, Economic initiatives = -0.83, Financial constraints = -0.80, Cultural change = 0.80, Technical know-how = 0.822, Economic factors = -0.80, and Business information system = 0.813. The implication of the study's findings for management is that SMEs should begin process improvement for effective overall performance by addressing the problems associated with the critical variables. The perceived limitation of the study is that the respondents' opinions may not reflect 100 % of the opinions of the unsampled population in the SME sector. This study's originality includes (i) holistic documentation of the myriad of variables influencing SMEs, which are fragmented in the literature, and (ii) pinpointing the critical variables affecting SME development with measurable evidence not found in the literature.
