CO₂ -Induced Spin-Lattice Coupling for Strong Magnetoelectric Materials.

ABSTRACT: The preparation of 2D magnetoelectric (ME) nanomaterials with strong ME coupling is crucial for the fast reading and writing processes in the next generation of storage devices. Herein, 2D BaTiO₃ (BTO)-CoFe₂ O₄ (CFO) ME nanocomposites are prepared through a substrate-free coupling strategy using supercritical CO₂ . Such 2D BTO-CFO with strong coupling is built through alternating in-plane and out-of-plane epitaxy stacking, leading to remarkable mutual biaxial strain effects for spin-lattice coupling. As a results, such strain effect significantly enhances the ferroelectricity of BTO and the ferrimagnetism of CFO, where an unexceptionally high ME coupling coefficient of (325.8 mV cm^-1 Oe^-1 ) is obtained for the BTO-CFO nanocomposites.

Tunable inverted gap in monolayer quasi-metallic MoS2 induced by strong charge-lattice coupling.

Project description:Polymorphism of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) exhibit fascinating optical and transport properties. Here, we observe a tunable inverted gap (~0.50 eV) and a fundamental gap (~0.10 eV) in quasimetallic monolayer MoS2. Using spectral-weight transfer analysis, we find that the inverted gap is attributed to the strong charge-lattice coupling in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs). A comprehensive experimental study, supported by theoretical calculations, is conducted to understand the transition of monolayer MoS2 on gold film from trigonal semiconducting 1H phase to the distorted octahedral quasimetallic 1T' phase. We clarify that electron doping from gold, facilitated by interfacial tensile strain, is the key mechanism leading to its 1H-1T' phase transition, thus resulting in the formation of the inverted gap. Our result shows the importance of charge-lattice coupling to the intrinsic properties of the inverted gap and polymorphism of MoS2, thereby unlocking new possibilities for 2D-TMD-based device fabrication.MoS2 exhibits multiple electronic properties associated with different crystal structures. Here, the authors observe inverted and fundamental gaps through a designed annealing-based strategy, to induce a semiconductor-to-metal phase transition in monolayer-MoS2 on Au, facilitated by interfacial strain and electron transfer from Au to MoS2.

Spin-charge-lattice coupling in YBaCuFeO5: Optical properties and first-principles calculations.

Project description:We combined spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman scattering spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to explore the optical properties of YBaCuFeO5 single crystals. Measuring the optical absorption spectrum of YBaCuFeO5 at room temperature revealed a direct optical band gap at approximately 1.41 eV and five bands near 1.69, 2.47, 3.16, 4.26, and 5.54 eV. Based on first-principles calculations, the observed optical excitations were appropriately assigned. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the band gap indicated anomalies in antiferromagnetic phase transition at 455 and 175 K. Additionally, a hardening in the frequency of the Eg phonon mode was observed at 175 K. The value of the spin-phonon coupling constant was 15.7 mRy/Å2. These results suggest a complex nature of spin-charge-lattice interactions in YBaCuFeO5.

Pressure induced superconductivity bordering a charge-density-wave state in NbTe4 with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Project description:Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe4, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure p = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature T c = 2.2 K and an upper critical field μ0Hc2 = 2 T. We also find large magnetoresistance (MR) up to 102% at low temperatures, which is a distinct feature differentiating NbTe4 from other conventional CDW materials.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of spin-lattice coupling.

Project description:Quantifying the dynamics of normal modes and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance in condensed matter. Spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-Tc superconductivity, and topological materials. However, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete. Here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to directly access the ultrafast motion of atoms and spins following the coherent excitation of an electromagnon in a multiferroic hexaferrite. One striking outcome is the different phase shifts relative to the driving field of the two different components. This phase shift provides insight into the excitation process of such a coupled mode. This direct observation of combined lattice and magnetization dynamics paves the way to access the mode-selective spin-lattice coupling strength, which remains a missing fundamental parameter for ultrafast control of magnetism and is relevant to a wide variety of materials.

Ultra-strong spin-orbit coupling and topological moire engineering in twisted ZrS2 bilayers.

Project description:We predict that twisted bilayers of 1T-ZrS2 realize a novel and tunable platform to engineer two-dimensional topological quantum phases dominated by strong spin-orbit interactions. At small twist angles, ZrS2 heterostructures give rise to an emergent and twist-controlled moiré Kagome lattice, combining geometric frustration and strong spin-orbit coupling to give rise to a moiré quantum spin Hall insulator with highly controllable and nearly-dispersionless bands. We devise a generic pseudo-spin theory for group-IV transition metal dichalcogenides that relies on the two-component character of the valence band maximum of the 1T structure at Γ, and study the emergence of a robust quantum anomalous Hall phase as well as possible fractional Chern insulating states from strong Coulomb repulsion at fractional fillings of the topological moiré Kagome bands. Our results establish group-IV transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers as a novel moiré platform to realize strongly-correlated topological phases in a twist-tunable setting.

Emergent multiferroism with magnetodielectric coupling in EuTiO3 created by a negative pressure control of strong spin-phonon coupling.

Project description:Negative pressure has emerged as a powerful tool to tailor the physical properties of functional materials. However, a negative pressure control of spin-phonon coupling for engineering magnetism and multiferroicity has not been explored to date. Here, using uniform three-dimensional strain-induced negative pressure in nanocomposite films of (EuTiO3)0.5:(MgO)0.5, we demonstrate an emergent multiferroicity with magnetodielectric coupling in EuTiO3, matching exactly with density functional theory calculations. Density functional theory calculations are further used to explore the underlying physics of antiferromagnetic-paraelectric to ferromagnetic-ferroelectric phase transitions, the spin-phonon coupling, and its correlation with negative pressures. The observation of magnetodielectric coupling in the EuTiO3 reveals that an enhanced spin-phonon coupling originates from a negative pressure induced by uniform three-dimensional strain. Our work provides a route to creating multiferroicity and magnetoelectric coupling in single-phase oxides using a negative pressure approach.

Two-Dimensional Asymmetric Multiferroics: Unique Way toward Strong Magnetoelectric Coupling and Multistate Memory.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided a fascinating platform for exploring novel multiferroics and emergent magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. Here, a novel 2D asymmetric multiferroic based on Janus 2D multiferroic MXene-analogous oxynitrides (InTlNO2) is presented by using first-principles calculations. We find three inequivalent phases for InTlNO2, including two metallic phases (p1 and p2) and one semiconducting phase (p3) with a band gap of 0.88 eV. All phases are room-temperature multiferroics with different Curie temperatures, leading to tunability by phase transitions. We show that there is a 90° rotation of the magnetic anisotropy easy axis between p1 and p2, where p1 favors the in-plane and p2 the out-of-plane easy axis. Therefore, the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned by reversing the out-of-plane polarization. Our strategy provides a unique way toward strong magnetoelectric coupling and multistate memory.

Near-Room-Temperature Magnetoelectric Coupling via Spin Crossover in an Iron(II) Complex.

Project description:Magnetoelectric coupling is achieved near room temperature in a spin crossover FeII molecule-based compound, [Fe(1bpp)2 ](BF4 )2 . Large atomic displacements resulting from Jahn-Teller distortions induce a change in the molecule dipole moment when switching between high-spin and low-spin states leading to a step-wise change in the electric polarization and dielectric constant. For temperatures in the region of bistability, the changes in magnetic and electrical properties are induced with a remarkably low magnetic field of 3 T. This result represents a successful expansion of magnetoelectric spin crossovers towards ambient conditions. Moreover, the observed 0.3-0.4 mC m-2 changes in the H-induced electric polarization suggest that the high strength of the coupling obtained via this route is accessible not just at cryogenic temperatures but also near room temperature, a feature that is especially appealing in the light of practical applications.

Domain Wall Dynamics in a Ferroelastic Spin Crossover Complex with Giant Magnetoelectric Coupling.

Project description:Pinned and mobile ferroelastic domain walls are detected in response to mechanical stress in a Mn3+ complex with two-step thermal switching between the spin triplet and spin quintet forms. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy on [MnIII(3,5-diCl-sal2(323))]BPh4 reveal three distinct symmetry-breaking phase transitions in the polar space group series Cc → Pc → P1 → P1(1/2). The transition mechanisms involve coupling between structural and spin state order parameters, and the three transitions are Landau tricritical, first order, and first order, respectively. The two first-order phase transitions also show changes in magnetic properties and spin state ordering in the Jahn-Teller-active Mn3+ complex. On the basis of the change in symmetry from that of the parent structure, Cc, the triclinic phases are also ferroelastic, which has been confirmed by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Measurements of magnetoelectric coupling revealed significant changes in electric polarization at both the Pc → P1 and P1 → P1(1/2) transitions, with opposite signs. All these phases are polar, while P1 is also chiral. Remanent electric polarization was detected when applying a pulsed magnetic field of 60 T in the P1→ P1(1/2) region of bistability at 90 K. Thus, we showcase here a rare example of multifunctionality in a spin crossover material where the strain and polarization tensors and structural and spin state order parameters are strongly coupled.

Intriguing spin-lattice interactions in EuTiO3.

Project description:During the last decade the cubic perovskite oxide EuTiO3 (ETO) has attracted enormous novel research activities due to possible multiferroicity, hidden magnetism far above its Néel temperature at TN = 5.5 K, structural instability at TS = 282 K, possible application as magneto-electric optic device, and strong spin-lattice coupling. Here we address a novel highlight of this compound by showing that well below TS a further structural phase transition occurs below 210 K without the application of an external magnetic field, and by questioning the assumed tetragonal symmetry of the structure below TS where tiny deviations from true tetragonality are observed by birefringence and XRD measurements. It is suggested that the competition in the second nearest neighbor spin-spin interaction modulated by the lattice dynamics is at the origin of these new observations.
