Project description:Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with promising applications in low-temperature fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we developed a synthesis procedure that used spinach as a source of carbon, iron, and nitrogen for preparing porous carbon nanosheets and studied their ORR catalytic performance. These carbon sheets showed a very high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of +0.88 V in 0.1 M KOH, which is 20 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. In addition, they showed a much better long-term stability than Pt/C and were insensitive to methanol. The remarkable ORR performance was attributed to the accessible high-density active sites that are primarily from Fe-N x moieties. This work paves the way toward the use of metal-enriching plants as a source for preparing porous carbon materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Project description:Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has been extensively studied as a precursor for nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) materials due to its high surface area, tunable porosity, and adjustable nitrogen content. However, the intrinsic microporous structure of the ZIF-8 limits mass transport and accessibility of reactants to active sites, reducing its effectiveness in electrochemical applications. In this study, a soft templating approach using a triblock copolymer was used to prepare mesoporous ZIF-8-derived NC (Meso-ZIF-NC) samples. The hierarchical porous structure was investigated by varying the ratios of Pluronic F-127, NaClO4, and toluene. The resulting Meso-ZIF-NC exhibited widespread pore size distribution with an enhanced mesopore (2-50 nm) volume according to the composition of the reaction mixtures. Pt nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the Meso-ZIF-NC to form Pt/Meso-ZIF-NC catalysts, which presented a high electrochemical surface area and improved oxygen reduction reaction activity. The study highlights the important role of mesopore structure and nitrogen doping in enhancing catalytic performance, providing a pathway for advanced fuel cell catalyst design.

Project description:Single-atom Fe-N-C catalysts has attracted widespread attentions in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the origin of ORR activity on Fe-N-C catalysts is still unclear, which hinder the further improvement of Fe-N-C catalysts. Herein, we provide a model to understand the ORR activity of Fe-N4 site from the spatial structure and energy level of the frontier orbitals by density functional theory calculations. Taking the regulation of divacancy defects on Fe-N4 site ORR activity as examples, we demonstrate that the hybridization between Fe 3dz2, 3dyz (3dxz) and O2 π* orbitals is the origin of Fe-N4 ORR activity. We found that the Fe-O bond length, the d-band center gap of spin states, the magnetic moment of Fe site and *O2 as descriptors can accurately predict the ORR activity of Fe-N4 site. Furthermore, these descriptors and ORR activity of Fe-N4 site are mainly distributed in two regions with obvious difference, which greatly relate to the height of Fe 3d projected orbital in the Z direction. This work provides a new insight into the ORR activity of single-atom M-N-C catalysts.

Project description:The development of non-noble metal catalysts with high-performance, long stability and low-cost is of great importance for fuel cells, to promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, Fe/Co/N-C/graphene composites were easily prepared by using Fe/ZIF-67 loaded on graphene oxide (GO). The Fe/Co/porous carbon nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on graphene with high specific surface area and large porosity, which endow high nitrogen doping and many more active sites with better ORR performance than the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Therefore, Fe/Co/N-C/graphene composites exhibited excellent ORR activity in alkaline media, with higher initial potential (0.91 V) and four electron process. They also showed remarkable long-term catalytic stability with 96.5% current retention after 12 000 s, and outstanding methanol resistance, compared with that of 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts. This work provides an effective strategy for the preparation of non-noble metal-based catalysts, which could have significant potential applications, such as in lithium-air batteries and water-splitting devices.

Project description:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with nitrogen-coordinated nonprecious metal sites have exhibited inimitable advantages in electrocatalysis. However, a large room for improving their activity and durability remains. Herein, we construct atomically dispersed Fe sites in N-doped carbon supports by secondary-atom-doped strategy. Upon the secondary doping, the density and coordination environment of active sites can be efficiently tuned, enabling the simultaneous improvement in the number and reactivity of the active site. Besides, structure optimizations in terms of the enlarged surface area and improved hydrophilicity can be achieved simultaneously. Due to the beneficial microstructure and abundant highly active FeN5 moieties resulting from the secondary doping, the resultant catalyst exhibits an admirable half-wave potential of 0.81 V versus 0.83 V for Pt/C and much better stability than Pt/C in acidic media. This work would offer a general strategy for the design and preparation of highly active SACs for electrochemical energy devices.

Project description:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to solar production of fuels, but the reaction mechanism underlying the performance for a best OER catalyst, Fe-doped NiOOH [(Ni,Fe)OOH], remains highly controversial. We used grand canonical quantum mechanics to predict the OER mechanisms including kinetics and thus overpotentials as a function of Fe content in (Ni,Fe)OOH catalysts. We find that density functional theory (DFT) without exact exchange predicts that addition of Fe does not reduce the overpotential much. However, DFT with exact exchange predicts dramatic improvement in performance for (Ni,Fe)OOH, leading to an overpotential of 0.42 V and a Tafel slope of 23 mV/decade (dec), in good agreement with experiments, 0.3-0.4 V and 30 mV/dec. We reveal that the high spin [Formula: see text] Fe(IV) leads to efficient formation of an active O radical intermediate, while the closed shell [Formula: see text] Ni(IV) catalyzes the subsequent O-O coupling, and thus it is the synergy between Fe and Ni that delivers the optimal performance for OER.

Project description:Removing the blocked molecular groups and fully exposing the intrinsic active sites of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could give full play to their advantages of multi-active sites and multi-channel mass transfer, which will benefit the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Here, the partial diligandation-activated ZIF-67 (named as ZIF-67-400) with excellent ORR performance was obtained by simple low-temperature pyrolysis. The ORR electrocatalytic activity exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.82 V and the stability of maintaining 96% activity after 10 h of operation, which is comparable to commercial Pt/C. Further research studies reveal that the morphology, special dodecahedron configuration, and crystal structure of ZIF-67-400 are maintained well during the pyrolysis, but some hydrocarbon groups in the ligands are eliminated, resulting in the active sites being exposed and coordinated with the intrinsic porosity, improving the catalytic performance. This work may provide an alternative path for activating the electrocatalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks by low-temperature annealing.

Project description:Exploring non-precious metal-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) as a substitute for precious metal catalysts has attracted great attention in recent times. In this paper, we report a general methodology for preparing nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO)-supported, FeCo alloy (FeCo@N-rGO)-based catalysts for ORR. The structure of the FeCo@N-rGO based catalysts is investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transition electron microscopy, etc. Results show that the FeCo alloy is supported by the rGO and carbon that derives from the organic ligand of Fe and Co ions. The eletrocatalytic performance is examined by cyclic voltammetry, linear scanning voltammetry, Tafel, electrochemical spectroscopy impedance, rotate disc electrode, and rotate ring disc electrode, etc. Results show that FeCo@N-rGO based catalysts exhibit an onset potential of 0.98 V (vs. RHE) and a half-wave potential of 0.93 V (vs. RHE). The excellent catalytic performance of FeCo@N-rGO is ascribed to its large surface area and the synergistic effect between FeCo alloy and N-rGO, which provides a large number of active sites and a sufficient surface area.

Project description:One of the most challenging targets in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts based on N-doped carbon materials is the control of the pore structure and obtaining nanostructured thin films that can easily be incorporated on the current collector. The carbonization of nitrogen-containing polymers and the heat treatment of a mixture of carbon materials and nitrogen precursor are the most common methods for obtaining N-doped carbon materials. However, in this synthetic protocols, the surface area and pore distribution are not controlled. This work enables the preparation of 2D-ordered N-doped carbon materials through the carbonization of 2D polyaniline. For that purpose, aniline has been electropolymerized within the porous structure of two different templates (ordered mesoporous Silica and ordered mesoporous Titania thin films). Thus, aniline has been impregnated into the porous structure and subsequently electropolymerized by means of chronoamperometry at constant potential. The resultant samples were heat-treated at 900 °C with the aim of obtaining 2D N-doped carbon materials within the template structures. Polyaniline and polyaniline-derived carbon materials have been analyzed via XPS and TEM and characterized by electrochemical measurements. It is worth noting that the obtained 2D-ordered mesoporous N-doped carbon materials have proved to be highly active electrocatalysts for the ORR because of the formation of quaternary nitrogen species during the heat treatment.

Project description:Designing appropriate methods to effectively enhance nitrogen-doping efficiency and active-site density is essential to boost the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of non-platinum Fe/N/C-type electrocatalysts. Here, we propose a facile and effective strategy to design a mesopore-structured Fe/N/C catalyst for the ORR with ultrahigh BET surface area and outstanding conductivity via nanochannels of molecular sieve-confined pyrolysis of Fe2+ ions coordinated with 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine complexes as a novel precursor with the stable coordination effect. Combining the nanochannel-confined effect with the stable coordination effect can synergistically improve the thermal stability and stabilize the nitrogen-enriched active sites, and help to control the loss of active N atoms during pyrolysis process and to further obtain a high active-site density for enhancing the ORR activity. The as-prepared Fe/N/C electrocatalyst has exhibited excellent catalytic activity with an onset potential of ~ 0.841 V (versus RHE) closely approaching the Pt/C catalyst and high long-term stability in alkaline electrolyte. Besides, low-hydrogen peroxide yield (< 6.5%) and high electron transfer number (3.88-3.94) can be found on this catalyst, indicating that it is a valuable substitute for traditional Pt/C catalysts. This work paves a new way to design high-performance Fe/N/C electrocatalysts and deepens the understanding of active site and ORR catalysis mechanism.
