Project description:New organophilic montmorillonites with oligomers of lactic acid and other compounds such as citric acid, stearic acid, maleic anhydride, pentaerythritol and ε-caprolactone were synthesized. They were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis and swelling capacity in water. In all tested composites, an increase in the montmorillonite interlayer distance resulting from intercalation of the modifying substance in the montmorillonite was found by means of XRD. Elemental analysis and FTIR showed that all of the tested samples contained an organic segment in the montmorillonite structure. TGA studies revealed that composites modified with lactic acid oligomers, stearic acid or ε-caprolactone had the highest thermal stability. They also exhibited the lowest swelling capacity which was 2-3 times lower than that for unmodified sodium montmorillonite. Some preliminary studies on the mechanical properties of PLA/modified montmorillonite are also presented and discussed.

Project description:Superabsorbents starches (SASs) were synthesized and characterized starting from native corn starch, bitter cassava and sweet cassava by graft copolymerization with itaconic acid. Additionally, their swelling behavior was studied both in water and in buffer solutions with different pHs and saline solutions. Their applicability was tested as environmentally friendly fertilizers in the absorption and release of urea, potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate at different concentrations of fertilizers. The values of swelling at the equilibrium (H∞) in water and different media of the graft copolymers demonstrated their superabsorbent capacity, polyelectrolyte behavior, and smart response to environmental stimuli. The percentage of fertilizer absorbed and released from the SASs was a function of the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium. The loading and release of SASs were depended on the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium as well as the nature, structure, and morphology of the starch used.

Project description:Concerning new polylactide (PLA) applications, the study investigates the toughening of PLA-CaSO4 β-anhydrite II (AII) composites with bio-sourced tributyl citrate (TBC). The effects of 5-20 wt.% TBC were evaluated in terms of morphology, mechanical and thermal properties, focusing on the enhancement of PLA crystallization and modification of glass transition temperature (Tg). Due to the strong plasticizing effects of TBC (even at 10%), the plasticized composites are characterized by significant decrease of Tg and rigidity, increase of ductility and impact resistance. Correlated with the amounts of plasticizer, a dramatic drop in melt viscosity is also revealed. Therefore, for applications requiring increased viscosity and enhanced melt strength (extrusion, thermoforming), the reactive modification, with up to 1% epoxy functional styrene-acrylic oligomers, was explored to enhance their rheology. Moreover, larger quantities of products were obtained by reactive extrusion (REX) and characterized to evidence their lower stiffness, enhanced ductility, and toughness. In current prospects, selected samples were tested for the extrusion of tubes (straws) and films. The migration of plasticizer was not noted (at 10% TBC), whereas the mechanical and thermal characterizations of films after two years of aging evidenced a surprising preservation of properties.

Project description:Desalination of seawater using solar energy is a promising solution to the global freshwater shortage. Ultrahigh surface area (up to 1740 m2 g-1) hierarchical porous carbons (HPC) have been prepared by the carbonization of precursors derived from the room temperature dehalogenation of low cost, widely available polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with simple, low cost, environmentally friendly processes. The broad hierarchical pores (from 2 nm to 20 μm) facilitate and ensure fast water and vapor transportation. Flexible photothermal steam generation devices were successfully fabricated with these hierarchical porous carbons on hydrophilic ultrathin (200 μm) paper. An evaporation rate record of 7.87 kg m-2 h-1 and high energy conversion of 95.8% have been obtained under the concentrated solar intensity of 5 kW m-2. Our research leads to a new approach to converting halogenated plastics into environmentally friendly and useful porous carbon materials by simple, low-cost processes. It establishes and validates the concept of creating a sustainable and economic pathway to simultaneously recycle halogenated polymers, harvest solar energy and produce clean freshwater.

Project description:Pervasive environmental contamination due to the uncontrolled dispersal of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) represents a substantial global health risk, demanding urgent intervention for the removal of this detrimental compound from affected sites and the promotion of ecological restoration. Conventional methodologies, however, are energy-intensive, susceptible to secondary pollution, and may inadvertently increase carbon emissions. In this study, a 2,4-DNT degradation module is designed, assembled, and validated in rice plants. Consequently, the modified rice plants acquire the ability to counteract the phytotoxicity of 2,4-DNT. The most significant finding of this study is that these modified rice plants can completely degrade 2,4-DNT into innocuous substances and subsequently introduce them into the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Further, research reveals that the modified rice plants enable the rapid phytoremediation of 2,4-DNT-contaminated soil. This innovative, eco-friendly phytoremediation approach for dinitrotoluene-contaminated soil and water demonstrates significant potential across diverse regions, substantially contributing to carbon neutrality and sustainable development objectives by repurposing carbon and energy from organic contaminants.

Project description:The overall performance of plasticizers on common mechanical and physical properties, as well as on the processability of polylactic acid (PLA) films, is well-explored. However, the influence of plasticizers on biodegradation is still in its infancy. In this study, the influence of natural-based dicarboxylic acid-based ester plasticizers (MC2178 and MC2192), acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC Citroflex A4), and polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) on the biodegradation of extruded PLA films was evaluated. Furthermore, the influence of accelerated ageing on the performance properties and biodegradation of films was further investigated. The biodegradation of films was determined under controlled thermophilic composting conditions (ISO 14855-1). Apart from respirometry, an evaluation of the degree of disintegration, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of film surfaces was conducted. The influence of melt-processing with plasticizers has a significant effect on structural changes. Especially, the degree of crystallinity has been found to be a major factor which affects the biodegradation rate. The lowest biodegradation rates have been evaluated for films plasticized with PEG 400. These lower molecular weight plasticizers enhanced the crystallinity degrees of the PLA phase due to an increase in chain mobility. On the contrary, the highest biodegradation rate was found for films plasticized with MC2192, which has a higher molecular weight and evoked minimal structural changes of the PLA. From the evaluated results, it could also be stated that migration of plasticizers, physical ageing, and chain scission of films prompted by ageing significantly influenced both the mechanical and thermal properties, as well as the biodegradation rate. Therefore, the ageing of parts has to be taken into consideration for the proper evolution of the biodegradation of plasticized PLA and their applications.

Project description:Environmentally friendly nanoporous gels are tailor-designed and employed in the adsorption of toxic organic pollutants in wastewater. To ensure the maximum adsorption of the contaminant molecules by the gels, molecular modeling techniques were used to evaluate the binding affinity between the toxic organic contaminants such as methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) and various biopolymers. To generate nanopores in the matrix of the polymeric gels, salt crystals were used as porogen. The pores were then used to accommodate catalytic nickel (Ni0) nanoparticles. Under UV irradiation, the nanoparticles demonstrated the effective adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of both the methylene blue and Congo red dyes, achieving removal efficiencies of up to 90% for MB and 80% for CR. The thermodynamic analysis suggested a spontaneous endothermic dissociative adsorption mechanism, which implies the oxidative catalytic degradation of the dyes. The kinetic modeling suggested a pseudo-second-order model, while the model for intra-particle diffusion revealed that Congo red diffuses faster than methylene blue. MB adsorption followed a Langmuir isotherm, while CR adsorption followed a linear isotherm. The results confirm that dye molecules initially undergo physisorption and subsequent dissociative adsorption. The products of the catalytic degradation of methylene blue continue to be absorbed on the surface of the nanoparticles, while those of Congo red switch to preferential desorption.

Project description:Carbon fiber-synthetic foam core sandwich composites are widely used for many structural applications due to their superior mechanical performance and low weight. Unfortunately these structures typically have very poor acoustic performance. There is increasingly growing demand in mitigating this noise issue in sandwich composite structures. This study shows that marrying carbon fiber composites with natural cork in a sandwich structure provides a synergistic effect yielding a noise-free sandwich composite structure without the sacrifice of mechanical performance or weight. Moreover the cork-core sandwich composites boast a 250% improvement in damping performance, providing increased durability and lifetime operation. Additionally as the world seeks environmentally friendly materials, the harvesting of cork is a natural, renewable process which reduces subsequent carbon footprints. Such a transition from synthetic foam cores to natural cork cores could provide unprecedented improvements in acoustic and vibrational performance in applications such as aircraft cabins or wind turbine blades.

Project description:An electrostatic power generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy by utilising the principle of variable capacitance. This change in capacitance is usually achieved by varying the gap or overlap between two parallel metallic plates. This paper proposes a novel electrostatic micro power generator where the change in capacitance is achieved by the movement of an aqueous solution of NaCl. A significant change in capacitance is achieved due to the higher than air dielectric constant of water and the Helmholtz double layer capacitor formed by ion separation at the electrode interfaces. The proposed device has significant advantages over traditional electrostatic devices which include low bias voltage and low mechanical frequency of operation. This is critical if the proposed device is to have utility in harvesting power from the environment. A figure of merit exceeding 10000(10(8)μW)/(mm(2)HzV(2)) which is two orders of magnitude greater than previous devices, is demonstrated for a prototype operating at a bias voltage of 1.2 V and a droplet frequency of 6 Hz. Concepts are presented for large scale power harvesting.

Project description:Studies on the oxidation of α-olefins via the two-stage method are presented. The new method consisted of oxidizing C30+ α-olefins with hydrogen peroxide (2 equiv.) and subsequent oxidation with oxygen. Products with high acid numbers (29-82 mgKOH/g) and saponification numbers (64-140 mgKOH/g) were obtained and compared with products obtained using only hydrogen peroxide or oxygen. It was demonstrated that H2O2 can be partially replaced by oxygen in the oxidative cleavage reaction of α-olefins. N-hydroxyphthalimide in combination with Co(acac)2 demonstrated high activity in the oxidation stage using oxygen.
