Project description:Biochar-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) was prepared by a sol-gel method in this study to improve the photocatalytic capacity for ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) removal from aqueous solutions. The results showed that biochar was successfully modified on TiO2 and helped improve its photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation. The removal capacity of ammonia-nitrogen on the synthesized photocatalyst performed well at pH 10 with 1 g L-1 C/TiO2 under both 60 (12.25 mg g-1) and 120 min (16.31 mg g-1) irradiation (xenon lamp, AM1.5, 25 A). Characterization of C/TiO2 through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) analyses showed the successful introduction of biochar on TiO2. SEM-EDS and BET analyses displayed that C/TiO2 had a larger surface area and more pores than the raw materials. XRD spectroscopy illustrated that C/TiO2 had typical characteristic peaks of anatase-TiO2 and presented a good photocatalytic degradation performance. It was confirmed from XPS and FT-IR analyses that -COOH groups were present in C/TiO2 and originated from biochar modification, and these enhanced the photocatalytic performance. Through radical quenching experiments, it was found that superoxide radicals (˙O2-) played a dominant role in NH3-N photocatalytic reactions with hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and valence band holes (h+) playing a synergistic role. N2 was the main degradation product after 6 h NH3-N photocatalytic degradation, which was much larger than NO3-/NO2- (both almost undetected) and NH3 (ca. 2 times lower than N2). The new composite C/TiO2 has potential for ammonia-nitrogen degradation in wastewater treatment and favorable for treating sewage sludge.

Project description:Herein, a new strategy to efficiently harvest photons in solar cells is presented. A solar cell heterostructure is put forward, based on a 1D conical TiO2 nanotubular scaffold of high aspect ratio, homogenously coated with a thin few nm layer of CdS light absorber using atomic layer deposition (ALD). For the first time, a large variety of conical nanotube layers with a huge span of aspect ratios was utilized and ALD was used for the preparation of a uniform CdS coating within the entire high surface area of the TiO2 nanotubes. The resulting 1D conical CdS/TiO2 tubular heterostructure acts as a sink for photons. Due to the multiple light scattering and absorption events within this nanotubular sink, a large portion of photons (nearly 80%) is converted into electrons. It is the combination of the scaffold architecture and the light absorber present on the high surface area as a very thin layer, the optimized charge transport and multiple optical effects that make this heterostructure very promising for the next generation of highly performing solar cells.

Project description:In this work, we investigated the photocatalytic removal of NOx using 3D-printed supports. Monolithic supports with internal channels were fabricated by Fused Modelling Deposition (FDM) using PET as the filament feedstock. The printing parameters of the supports were optimized to maximize the exposure of the photocatalyst to UV light throughout the monolithic PET printed supports. The removal experiments were carried out in a continuous gas phase flow reactor, which was custom designed in-house incorporating a 3D printed PET support impregnated with TiO2 as photocatalyst. The impregnated and non-impregnated supports were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectrometry, SEM and AFM. The effect of several key-factors on the NOx removal capacity was investigated, including the type of PET filament (native recycled, BPET vs. glycol-modified, PETG), the type of TiO2 (P25 vs. Hombikat UV-100), the UV light source (LED vs. tubular lamps), and the number of deposited TiO2 layers. The highest NO and NOx removal were achieved by using PETG supports coated with a single layer of Hombikat UV-100 and irradiating the flat reactor from both sides using two sets of black light lamps. However, the highest selectivity toward nitrate formation was obtained when using P25 under the same experimental conditions. This work demonstrates that 3D printing is a reliable and powerful technique for fabricating photocatalytic reactive supports that can serve as a versatile platform for evaluating photocatalytic performance.

Project description:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a typical perfluorinated carboxylic acid, is an emerging type of permanent organic pollutants that are regulated by the Stockholm Convention. The degradation of PFOA, however, is quite challenging largely due to the ultra-high stability of C-F bonds. Compared with other techniques, photocatalytic degradation offers the potential advantages of simple operation under mild conditions as well as exceptional decomposition and defluorination efficiency. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most frequently used photocatalysts, but so far, the pristine nanosized TiO2 (e.g., the commercial P25) has been considered inefficient for PFOA degradation, since the photo-generated hydroxyl radicals from TiO2 are not able to directly attack C-F bonds. Mesoporous Sb2O3/TiO2 heterojunctions were therefore rationally designed in this work, of which the confined Sb2O3 nanoparticles in mesoporous TiO2 framework could not only tune the band structure and also increase the number of active sites for PFOA degradation. It was found that, after loading Sb2O3, the absorption of UV light was enhanced, indicating a higher efficiency of light utilization; while the band gap was reduced, which accelerated the separation of photo-generated charge carriers; and most importantly, the valence band edge of the Sb2O3/TiO2 heterojunction was significantly lifted so as to prevent the occurrence of hydroxyl radical pathway. Under the optimal ratio of Sb2O3-TiO2, the resulting catalysts managed to remove 81.7% PFOA in 2 h, with a degradation kinetics 4.2 times faster than the commercial P25. Scavenger tests and electron spin resonance spectra further revealed that such improvement was mainly attributed to the formation of superoxide radicals and photo-generated holes, in which the former drove the decarboxylation from C7F15COOH-C7F15 •, and the latter promoted the direct electron transfer for the conversion of C7F15COO--C7F15COO•. The Sb2O3/TiO2 photocatalysts were highly recyclable, with nearly 90% of the initial activity being retained after five consecutive cycles, guaranteeing the feasibility of long-term operation.

Project description:Dye degradation via photocatalysis technology has been investigated intensively to tackle environmental issues and energy crisis concerns. In this study, a newly designed ternary photocatalyst was facilely prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal process by directly mixing TiO2 nanoparticles with carbon dots (C-dots) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The optimized precursor treatments and heterostructure components show significantly enhanced photodegradation activity towards organic dyes Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB). Excellent photocatalytic activities were achieved owing to the better attachment of anatase-type TiO2 nanoparticle-aggregations to the C-dots/g-C3N4 (CC) nanocomposite, which impressively displays superhydrophilicity by employing the hydrothermal activation process. FT-IR spectra revealed that the hydrothermal treatment could remarkably increase the coupling interactions between TiO2 nanoparticles and the CC nanosheets within the ternary catalyst, enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Thus, it was concluded that this ternary photocatalyst is highly suitable for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater.

Project description:The photo-reduction of bromate (BrO3 -) has attracted much attention due to the carcinogenesis and genotoxicity of BrO3 - in drinking water. In this study, a heterojunction photocatalyst was developed by depositing Au nanoparticles (NPs) onto P25 TiO2 NPs through a one-pot, solvent-thermal process. Due to the unique properties of Au, the Au NPs deposited on the TiO2 surface created a Schottky barrier between the metal and the semiconductor, leading to an effective separation of photo-generated charge carriers as the Au nanoparticles served as electron sinks. The Au/TiO2 photocatalyst demonstrated efficient reduction of BrO3 - under UV light illumination without the need for sacrificial agents. The effect of different Au loading of Au/TiO2 was systematically investigated for its influence on the generation of electrons and the reduction ability of BrO3 -. The results indicate that the 1% Au/TiO2 catalyst exhibited a higher concentration of localized electrons, rendering it more effective in BrO3 - removal. The photocatalytic efficiency for BrO3 - reduction decreased upon the addition of K2S2O8 as an electron quencher, suggesting that the primary factor in this photo-reduction process was the availability of electrons. These findings hold promise for the potential application of the Au/TiO2 catalyst in the removal of BrO3 - from drinking water through photo-reduction.

Project description:Photocatalysis heterogeneous is an essential method for water treatment. In this study, a novel photocatalytic erbium-doped hydroxyapatite-decorated titanium dioxide (TiO2@Er-Hap) was obtained using the sol-gel method and applied to remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) drug and methylene blue (MB) dye contaminants. The sample's structural, physical, morphological, and photocatalytic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the presence of the anatase phase in TiO2@Er-Hap. The oxide nanoparticles were deposited on the Hap surface, and the proposed material presented a band gap energy of 3.33 eV. Furthermore, TiO2@Er-Hap presented a larger surface area when compared with the material not decorated with the oxide. Photocatalysis tests performed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation showed that TiO2@Er-Hap removed MB dye (100%) and CIP (71.16%), despite low mineralization evidenced in TOC analysis. The irradiated pollutant solution after the photocatalysis process was nontoxic, as observed in the ecotoxic test, indicating that the photocatalytic worked. Inhibitor tests showed that the •OH radicals were the main species involved in the tests performed. The material demonstrated activity even after five consecutive cycles of use. Finally, the results suggest that TiO2@Er-Hap is a suitable candidate for water decontamination via photocatalytic processes.

Project description:Using sunlight as the driving force for photocatalytic processes holds great promise for sustainability. As a starting point for developing a material capable of degrading aquatic pollutants using solar energy as a stimulus, this work focuses on synthesizing Au-TiO2 nanocomposites using the deposition-precipitation method. Characterization of Au-TiO2 nanoparticles was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A model pollutant, paracetamol, was used to test the synergetic effect of Au (0.05 wt%) nanoparticles (NPs) with TiO2 on photocatalytic activity. The influence of the parameters pH, loading (0.4, 0.8, and 1 g/L), pollutant concentration (20, 30, 40 ppm), and contact time (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 min) was studied by exposing the NPs to solar radiation. The photocatalytic degradation was most effective at a contact time of 3 h, an initial concentration of 20 ppm, and a pH of 6.8. Under these conditions, paracetamol in 1 g/L of Au-TiO2 nanocomposites can be degraded by more than 99.17% under solar irradiation. As a result of the Au-TiO2 composite's ability to successfully serve as a photocatalyst using sun radiation, water purification processes can be more widespread, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

Project description:Flexible fiber membranes for pollutant removal have received increasing attention due to their high adsorption performance and easy recycling characteristics. However, due to the lack of environmentally friendly regeneration, some adsorption membranes have low regeneration efficiency, especially in terms of chemical adsorption, so they lack reusability. This study prepares a series of conducting polymer [PAn (polyaniline) or PPy (polypyrrole) or PTh (polythiophene)] graphene quantum dots (GQDs, the size of GQDs is about 20 nm)/TiO2 ternary fiber membranes via a facile electrospinning method with chemical deposition. Remarkably, this creates an anatase TiO2 and π-conjugated system. The combination is beneficial to the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, showing synergistic promotion in both the degradation rate and the degree of decomposition. The UV-vis test shows that the combination of GQDs broadens the optical response threshold of TiO2, from near ultraviolet region excitation to visible region excitation. At the same time, the conductive polymer load further reduces the energy required for photogenerated electron transfer, which theoretically improves the degradation effect. Photocatalytic degradation tests showed that the PTh/GQDs/TiO2 fiber membrane exhibited significant high photocatalytic activity of visible-light in the methylene blue (MB) and TC degradation. The degradation rate level is 92.90% and 80.58%, respectively and the MB removal is more than 4 times that of bare TiO2 membrane. After photocatalytic regeneration four times, the regeneration efficiency can be maintained above 95%. Notably, various experimental results show that the interface charge transfer mechanism between GQDs/TiO2 and PTh follows the Z-scheme heterojunction, which maximizes the retention of strong reducing electrons and oxidation holes. In the degradation, the active species of ·O2 - and ·OH, make different contributions in the photocatalysts, which oxidize and break down the pollutant molecules into small molecules and then to harmless substances. According to the electronegativity difference of the material itself, PTh acts as electron acceptor in the degradation system, and TiO2 fiber membrane doped with GQDs acts as electron donor. The present research, not only offers feasibility of the PTh/GQDs/TiO2 flexible fiber membrane as an environment-friendly catalyst, but also motivates researchers to develop flexible fiber materials for future photocatalytic technology.

Project description:Outdoor and indoor air pollution has become a global concern in modern society. Although many policies and regulations on air quality have been promulgated worldwide over the past decades, airborne pollution still negatively affects health and therefore the life-style of human beings. One of the strategies to challenge this problem might be reducing the amount of airborne pollutant by mineralising them via photoinduced reactions. Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous pollutants via titanium dioxide is one of the most promising solar photochemical reactions. In this research work, by means of a green sol-gel procedure, we have coupled titania to graphene (0.5 and 1.0 wt%) aiming to increase the solar photocatalytic activity of the produced hybrid materials. Transient paramagnetic species formed upon UV-A irradiation were detected by means of EPR spectroscopy. The photocatalytic reactions were assessed by monitoring the removal of nitrogen oxides and two different volatile organic compounds (benzene and isopropanol), which has never been assessed before. Our results highlight the exceptional characteristics of the TiO2/graphene hybrid material synthesised with 1.0 wt% graphene, and its excellent suitability for multi-purpose applications in the field of environmental remediation. Compared to unmodified titania, it shows a clear enhancement in the photocatalytic removal of those hazardous pollutants, having a photocatalytic degradation rate twice higher. In addition, the same material is highly stable and shows fully recyclability over repeated tests. Hybrid titania-graphene materials could thus be exploited to grant safer outdoor and indoor environments, having thus a beneficial impact on public health and on the quality of our lives.
