Project description:Redox-active two-dimensional polymers (RA-2DPs) are promising lithium battery organic cathode materials due to their regular porosities and high chemical stabilities. However, weak electrical conductivities inherent to the non-conjugated molecular motifs used thus far limit device performance and the practical relevance of these materials. We herein address this problem by developing a modular approach to construct π-conjugated RA-2DPs with a new polycyclic aromatic redox-active building block PDI-DA. Efficient imine-condensation between PDI-DA and two polyfunctional amine nodes followed by quantitative alkyl chain removal produced RA-2DPs TAPPy-PDI and TAPB-PDI as conjugated, porous, polycrystalline networks. In-plane conjugation and permanent porosity endow these materials with high electrical conductivity and high ion diffusion rates. As such, both RA-2DPs function as organic cathode materials with good rate performance and excellent cycling stability. Importantly, the improved design enables higher areal mass-loadings than were previously available, which drives a practical demonstration of TAPPy-PDI as the power source for a series of LED lights. Collectively, this investigation discloses viable synthetic methodologies and design principles for the realization of high-performance organic cathode materials.

Project description:Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to the high abundance and low cost of Na. It is well known that S doping can improve the electrochemical performance of carbon materials for NIBs. However, the current methods for S doping in carbons normally involve toxic precursors or rigorous conditions. In this work, we report a creative and facile strategy for preparing S-doped porous carbons (SCs) via the pyrolysis of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). Briefly, thiophene-based CMPs served as the precursors and doping sources simultaneously. Simple direct carbonization of CMPs produced S-doped carbon materials with highly porous structures. When used as an anode for NIBs, the SCs exhibited a high reversible capacity of 440 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, superior rate capability, and excellent cycling stability (297 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 500 mA g-1), outperforming most S-doped carbon materials reported thus far. The excellent performance of the SCs is attributed to the expanded lattice distance after S doping. Furthermore, we employed ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the electrochemical reaction mechanism of the SCs during sodiation-desodiation, which can highlight the role of doped S for Na-ion storage.

Project description:Redox-active porous organic polymers (POPs) demonstrate significant potential in supercapacitors. However, their intrinsic low electrical conductivity and stacking tendencies often lead to low utilization rates of redox-active sites within their structural units. Herein, polyimide POPs (donated as PMTA) are synthesized in situ on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) from tetramino-benzoquinone (TABQ) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA) monomers. The strong π-π stacking interactions drive the PMTA POPs and the MWCNTs together to form a PMTA/MWCNT composite. With the assistance of MWCNTs, the stacking issue and low conductivity of PMTA POPs are well addressed, leading to the obvious activation and enhanced utilization of the redox-active groups in the PMTA POPs. PMTA/MWCNT then achieves a high capacitance of 375.2 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 as compared to the pristine PMTA POPs (5.7 F g-1) and excellent cycling stability of 89.7% after 8000 cycles at 5 A g-1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and in situ Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) results reveal that the electrode reactions involve the reversible structural evolution of carbonyl groups, which are activated to provide rich pseudocapacitance. Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) assembled with PMTA/MWCNTs and activated carbon (AC) offer a high energy density of 15.4 Wh kg-1 at 980.4 W kg-1 and maintain a capacitance retention of 125% after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g-1, indicating their good potential for practical applications.

Project description:Conjugated coordination polymers (CCPs) with extended π-d conjugation, which can effectively promote long-range delocalization of electrons and enhance conductivity, are superior to traditional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and attracted great attention for potential applications in chemical sensors, electronics, energy conversion/storage devices, etc. However, the precise construction of CCPs is still challenging due to the complex and uncontrollable reactions of CCPs. Herein, two different framework dimensions of CCPs are controllably realized by employing the same ligand (2,3,5,6-tetraaminobenzoquinone (TABQ)) and the same metal (copper) as center ions. The manipulation of reaction leads to different valences of ligands and metal ions, different coordination geometries, and thereby 1D-CuTABQ and 2D-CuTABQ frameworks, respectively. High performance of charge storage is hence achieved involving the storage of both cations and anions, and therein, 2D-CuTABQ shows a high reversible capacity of ≈305 mAh g-1 , good rate capability and high capacity retention (≈170 mAh g-1 after 2000 cycles at 5 A g-1 with 0.01% decay per cycle), which outperforms 1D-CuTABQ and almost all of the reported MOFs as cathodes for batteries. These results highlight the delicate structural control of CCPs for high-performance batteries and other various applications.

Project description:To create both greener and high-power metal-ion batteries, it is of prime importance to invent an unprecedented electrode material that will be able to store a colossal amount of charge carriers by a redox mechanism. Employing periodic DFT calculations, we modeled a new metal-organic framework, which displays energy density exceeding that of conventional inorganic and organic electrodes, such as Li- and Na-rich oxides and anthraquinones. The designed MOF has a rhombohedral unit cell in which an Ni(II) node is coordinated by 2,5-dicyano-p-benzoquinone linkers in such a way that all components participate in the redox reaction upon lithiation, sodiation and magnesiation. The spatial and electronic changes occurring in the MOF after the interaction with Li, Na and Mg are discussed on the basis of calculated electrode potentials versus Li0/Li+, Na0/Na+ and Mg0/Mg2+, respectively. In addition, the specific capacities and energy densities are calculated and used as a measure for the electrode applicability of the designed material. Although the highest capacity and energy density are predicted for Li storage, the greater structural robustness toward Na and Mg uptake suggests a higher cycling stability in addition to lower cost. The theoretical results indicate that the MOF is a promising choice for a green electrode material (with <10% heavy metal content) and is well worth experimental testing.

Project description:Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been intensively explored for various optoelectronic applications in the last few decades. Nevertheless, CP based electrochemical energy storage devices such as supercapacitors remain largely unexplored. This is mainly owing to the low specific capacitance, poor structural/electrochemical stability, and low energy density of most existing CPs. In this contribution, a novel set of redox-active conjugated microporous polymers, TAT-CMP-1 and TAT-CMP-2, based on nitrogen-rich and highly conductive triazatruxene building blocks, were successfully designed and synthesized to explore their potential application as efficient and stable electrode materials for supercapacitors. Despite a moderate surface area of 88 m2 g-1 for TAT-CMP-1 and 106 m2 g-1 for TAT-CMP-2, exceptional specific capacitances of 141 F g-1 and 183 F g-1 were achieved at a current density of 1 A g-1. The resulting polymers exhibited unusually high areal specific capacitance (>160 μF cm-2), which is attributed to the pseudocapacitance resulting from redox-active structures with high nitrogen content. More importantly, the TAT-CMP-2 electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability: only 5% capacitance fading is observed after 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g-1, enabling the possible use of these materials as electrodes in electrochemical devices.

Project description:The development of organic materials for electrochemical energy storage has attracted great attention because of their high natural abundance and relatively low toxicity. The bulk of these studies focus on small molecules, polymers, or porous/framework-type materials that employ one type of redox moiety. Here, we report the synthesis and testing of organic materials that incorporate two distinct types of redox units: triptycene-based quinones and perylene diimides. We examine this "dual redox" concept through the synthesis of both frameworks and small molecule model compounds with the redox units positioned at the vertices and connection points. Such a design increases the theoretical capacity of the material. It also imparts high stability because both examples are relatively rigid and highly insoluble in the electrolyte. Lithium-ion batteries consisting of the framework and the small molecule have an excellent cycling retention of 75 and 77%, respectively, over 500 cycles at 1 C. Our work emphasizes the advantages of using multiple redox units in the design of the cathodic materials and redox-active triptycene linkages to achieve high cycling stability.

Project description:During the past decades π-conjugated bi-radicals have attracted increasing attention, due to the existence of two close-in-energy resonant electronic configurations with very distinct characteristics: the open-shell bi-radical and the closed-shell quinoidal. The chemical design of the bi-radical structure has been shown to be very effective to shift the balance towards one, or the other, electronic distribution. Some reports have experimentally studied the analogous 1D oligomers and polymers, however, only the open-shell multi-radical configuration has been detected, and it is yet not very clear which structural and chemical parameters are relevant in such extended systems. In this work, via first principles quantum chemical simulations, we study a series of π-conjugated 1D polymers based on triarylmethyl radicals with different chemical functionalization. We find that dihedral angles of the aryl rings connecting the radical centres are the key conformational parameter determining the electronic balance. This provides a simple recipe to use chemical functionalization of aryl rings as a tool to shift the system towards either the electron paired or unpaired configurations. Additionally, we find such conformational control is also effective under the effect of thermal fluctuations, which highlights its potential technological applicability.

Project description:Organic semiconductors based on conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers are a unique platform for electronic, spintronic, and energy-harvesting devices. Understanding the electronic structure of D-A polymers with a small band gap is essential for developing next-generation technologies. Here, we investigate the electronic structure and optical spectra of cyclopentadithiophene-based closed/open-shell D-A polymers using density functional theory and the Bethe-Salpeter equation based on G[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text] approximation. We explored the role of different acceptor units and chemical substitutions on the structural changes and, more importantly, electronic, optical, and dielectric behavior. We found that the computed first exciton peak of the polymers agreed well with the available experimentally measured optical gap. Furthermore, D-A polymers with open-shell character display higher dielectric constant than the closed-shell polymers. We show that the exceptional performance of polycyclopentadithiophene-thiophenylthiadiazoloquinoxaline (PCPDT-TTQ) as a scalable n-type material for Faradaic supercapacitors can be partly ascribed to its elevated dielectric constant. Consequently, these D-A polymers, characterized by their high dielectric constants, exhibit significant potential for various applications, including energy storage, organic electronics, and the production of dielectric films.
