Project description:Molecular uranium nitride complexes were prepared to relate their small molecule reactivity to the nature of the U[double bond, length as m-dash]N[double bond, length as m-dash]U bonding imposed by the supporting ligand. The U4+-U4+ nitride complexes, [NBu4][{(( t BuO)3SiO)3U}2(μ-N)], [NBu4]-1, and [NBu4][((Me3Si)2N)3U}2(μ-N)], 2, were synthesised by reacting NBu4N3 with the U3+ complexes, [U(OSi(O t Bu)3)2(μ-OSi(O t Bu)3)]2 and [U(N(SiMe3)2)3], respectively. Oxidation of 2 with AgBPh4 gave the U4+-U5+ analogue, [((Me3Si)2N)3U}2(μ-N)], 4. The previously reported methylene-bridged U4+-U4+ nitride [Na(dme)3][((Me3Si)2)2U(μ-N)(μ-κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)U(N(SiMe3)2)2] (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), [Na(dme)3]-3, provided a versatile precursor for the synthesis of the mixed-ligand U4+-U4+ nitride complex, [Na(dme)3][((Me3Si)2N)3U(μ-N)U(N(SiMe3)2)(OSi(O t Bu)3)], 5. The reactivity of the 1-5 complexes was assessed with CO2, CO, and H2. Complex [NBu4]-1 displays similar reactivity to the previously reported heterobimetallic complex, [Cs{(( t BuO)3SiO)3U}2(μ-N)], [Cs]-1, whereas the amide complexes 2 and 4 are unreactive with these substrates. The mixed-ligand complexes 3 and 5 react with CO and CO2 but not H2. The nitride complexes [NBu4]-1, 2, 4, and 5 along with their small molecule activation products were structurally characterized. Magnetic data measured for the all-siloxide complexes [NBu4]-1 and [Cs]-1 show uncoupled uranium centers, while strong antiferromagnetic coupling was found in complexes containing amide ligands, namely 2 and 5 (with maxima in the χ versus T plot of 90 K and 55 K). Computational analysis indicates that the U(μ-N) bond order decreases with the introduction of oxygen-based ligands effectively increasing the nucleophilicity of the bridging nitride.

Project description:Syntheses of Vaska-type complexes [IrP2X(CO)] (P = phosphine, X = halide) with all four common halides (fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide) was attempted using a protic and hemilabile imidazolyl di-tert-butyl phosphine ligand. In the solid-state, all four complexes were found to be ionic with the halides in the outer-sphere, and the fourth coordination site of the square plane occupied by the imidazole arm of the ligand. In solution, however, the chloride complex was found to be in equilibrium with an octahedral IrIII-H species at room temperature. For the bromide and iodide analogs, the corresponding IrIII-H species were also observed but only after heating the solutions. The neutral IrI Vaska's analogs for X = Cl, Br, and I were obtained upon addition of excess halide salt, albeit heating was required for X = Br and I. The IrIII-H species are proposed to originate from tautomerization of minor amounts of the electron rich neutral Vaska analog (halide inner-sphere and phosphines monodentate) that are in equilibrium with the ionic species. Heating is required for the larger anions of bromide and iodide to overcome a kinetic barrier associated with their movement to an inner-sphere position prior to tautormerization. For the fluoride analog, the IrIII-H was not observed, attributable to strong hydrogen bonding interactions of the imidazolyl proton with the fluoride anion.

Project description:CYP125 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis catalyzes sequential oxidation of the cholesterol side-chain terminal methyl group to the alcohol, aldehyde, and finally acid. Here, we demonstrate that CYP125 simultaneously catalyzes the formation of five other products, all of which result from deformylation of the sterol side chain. The aldehyde intermediate is shown to be the precursor of both the conventional acid metabolite and the five deformylation products. The acid arises by protonation of the ferric-peroxo anion species and formation of the ferryl-oxene species, also known as Compound I, followed by hydrogen abstraction and oxygen transfer. The deformylation products arise by addition of the same ferric-peroxo anion to the aldehyde intermediate to give a peroxyhemiacetal that leads to C-C bond cleavage. This bifurcation of the catalytic sequence has allowed us to examine the effect of electron donation by the proximal ligand on the properties of the ferric-peroxo anion. Replacement of the cysteine thiolate iron ligand by a selenocysteine results in UV-vis, EPR, and resonance Raman spectral changes indicative of an increased electron donation from the proximal selenolate ligand to the iron. Analysis of the product distribution in the reaction of the selenocysteine substituted enzyme reveals a gain in the formation of the acid (Compound I pathway) at the expense of deformylation products. These observations are consistent with an increase in the pK(a) of the ferric-peroxo anion, which favors its protonation and, therefore, Compound I formation.

Project description:A combination of Pt L3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) and DFT (TPSS) calculations have been performed on powder samples of the archetypal platinum porphyrinoid complexes PtII[TpCF3PP], PtIV[TpCF3PP]Cl2, and PtIV[TpCF3PC](Ar)(py), where TpCF3PP2- = meso-tetrakis(p-trifluoromethylphenyl)porphyrinato and TpCF3PC3- = meso-tris(p-trifluoromethylphenyl)corrolato. The three complexes yielded Pt L3-edge energies of 11 566.0 eV, 11 567.2 eV, and 11 567.6 eV, respectively. The 1.2 eV blueshift from the Pt(ii) to the Pt(iv) porphyrin derivative is smaller than expected for a formal two-electron oxidation of the metal center. A rationale was provided by DFT-based Hirshfeld which showed that the porphyrin ligand in the Pt(iv) complex is actually substantially oxidized relative to that in the Pt(ii) complex. The much smaller blueshift of 0.4 eV, going from PtIV[TpCF3PP]Cl2, and PtIV[TpCF3PC](Ar)(py), is ascribable to the significantly stronger ligand field in the latter compound.

Project description:Nanotubes made of boron nitride (BN) and carbon have attracted considerable attention within the literature due to their unique mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. In this work, BN and carbon nanotubes, exhibiting high purity (>99%) and similar surface areas (~200 m2/g), were systematically investigated for their thermal stability and oxidation behavior by combining thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry methods at temperatures of up to ~1300 °C under a synthetic air flow environment. The BN nanotubes showed a good resistance to oxidation up to ~900 °C and fully transformed to boron oxide up to ~1100 °C, while the carbon nanotubes were stable up to ~450 °C and almost completely combusted up to ~800 °C. The different oxidation mechanisms are attributed to the different chemical nature of the two types of nanotubes.

Project description:Advancing the understanding of using alkali-metal alkoxides as additives to organomagnesium reagents in Mg-Br exchange reactions, a homologous series of mixed-ligand alkyl/alkoxide alkali-metal magnesiates [MMg(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (dmem)]2 [dmem=2-{[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]methylamino} ethoxide; M=Li, 1; Na, 2; (THF)K, 3] has been prepared. Structural and spectroscopic studies have established the constitutions of these heteroleptic/heterometallic species, which are retained in arene solution. Evaluation of their reactivity towards 2-bromoanisole has uncovered a marked alkali-metal effect with potassium magnesiate 3 being the most efficient of the three ate reagents. Studies probing the constitution of the exchange product from this reaction suggest that the putative [KMgAr2 (dmem)]2 (Ar=o-OMe-C6 H4 ) intermediate undergoes redistribution into its single metal components [KAr]n and [MgAr(dmem)]2 (5). This process can be circumvented by using a different potassium alkoxide containing an aliphatic chain such as KOR' (R'=2-ethylhexyl) which undergoes co-complexation with Mg(CH2 SiMe3 ) to give [KMg(CH2 SiMe3 )2 (OR')]2 (7). This ate, in turn, reacts quantitatively with 2-bromoanisole furnishing [KMgAr2 (OR')]2 (9) which is stable in solution as a bimetallic compound. Collectively this work highlights the complexity of these alkali-metal mediated Mg-Br exchange reactions, where each reaction component can have a profound effect not only on the success of the reaction; but also the stability of the final metalated intermediates prior to their electrophilic interception.

Project description:Nickel's +1 oxidation state has received much interest due to its varied and often enigmatic behavior in increasingly popular catalytic methods. In part, the lack of understanding about NiI results from common synthetic strategies limiting the breadth of complexes that are accessible for mechanistic study and catalyst design. We report an oxidative approach using tribromide salts that allows for the generation of a well-defined precursor, [NiI(COD)Br]2, as well as several new NiI complexes. Included among them are complexes bearing bulky monophosphines, for which structure-speciation relationships are established and catalytic reactivity in a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (SMC) is investigated. Notably, these routes also allow for the synthesis of well-defined monomeric t-Bubpy-bound NiI complexes, which has not previously been achieved. These complexes, which react with aryl halides, can enable previously challenging mechanistic investigations and present new opportunities for catalysis and synthesis.

Project description:Transition-metal (TM) nitrides are a class of compounds with a wide range of properties and applications. Hard superconducting nitrides are of particular interest for electronic applications under working conditions such as coating and high stress (e.g., electromechanical systems). However, most of the known TM nitrides crystallize in the rock-salt structure, a structure that is unfavorable to resist shear strain, and they exhibit relatively low indentation hardness, typically in the range of 10-20 GPa. Here, we report high-pressure synthesis of hexagonal δ-MoN and cubic γ-MoN through an ion-exchange reaction at 3.5 GPa. The final products are in the bulk form with crystallite sizes of 50 - 80 μm. Based on indentation testing on single crystals, hexagonal δ-MoN exhibits excellent hardness of ~30 GPa, which is 30% higher than cubic γ-MoN (~23 GPa) and is so far the hardest among the known metal nitrides. The hardness enhancement in hexagonal phase is attributed to extended covalently bonded Mo-N network than that in cubic phase. The measured superconducting transition temperatures for δ-MoN and cubic γ-MoN are 13.8 and 5.5 K, respectively, in good agreement with previous measurements.
