ABSTRACT: The species diversity of freshwater crabs of Bangladesh is poorly known. In this study, Acanthopotamonfungosum (Alcock, 1909) and Maydelliathelphusaedentula (Alcock, 1909) are reported as new records from Bangladesh. The two species were identified through morphology and molecular phylogeny based on 16S rDNA gene sequences. Herein, diagnostic characters of both species are provided respective to close congeners. There is concern over the conservation status of A.fungosum due to its narrow distributional range. In addition, an updated checklist and a key to the freshwater crabs of Bangladesh are provided.

Project description:BackgroundThe Azores is a remote oceanic archipelago of nine islands which belongs to the Macaronesia biogeographical region hosting a unique biodiversity. The present Azorean landscape is strongly modified by the presence of man and only in small areas, where the soil or climate was too rough, have primitive conditions remained unchanged. Despite the fact that most of the Azorean native habitats are now lost, a large number of endemic species are still present and need urgent conservation. The present checklist of terrestrial and freshwater arthropods of the Azores Archipelago is based on all known published literature. The main goal of this work is to list, as rigorously as possible, all the known terrestrial and freshwater arthropods of the Azores. In this way, we are contributing to solve the 'Linnaean' shortfall, i.e. an incomplete taxonomic description of species-level diversity and the Wallacean Biodiversity Shortfall, the incomplete species distribution knowledge.New informationThe checklist includes new records of arthropods at island and archipelago levels that were published in the last twelve years. Compared to the last checklist of Azorean arthropods (Borges et al. 2010b), a total of 217 taxa (species and subspecies) are added.Currently, the total number of terrestrial and freshwater arthropod species and subspecies in the Azores is estimated to be 2420 taxa belonging to 14 classes, 53 orders, 440 families, 1556 genera, 2400 species and 149 individual subspecies.The most diverse orders of Azorean arthropods are: Coleoptera (585 taxa), Diptera (423 taxa), Hemiptera (338 taxa), Hymenoptera (163 taxa), Lepidoptera (159 taxa) and Araneae (133 taxa).A total of 276 endemic taxa are currently known (232 species and 44 subspecies), belonging to eight classes and 22 orders. São Miguel, Terceira and Pico are the islands with higher number of endemic species and subspecies. In the Azores, the number of native non-endemic taxa is 793 taxa, totalling 1069 indigenous taxa. Compared to the other nearest Macaronesian archipelagos (Madeira and Canaries), the Azorean arthropod fauna is characterised by a lower percentage of endemism (endemics/indigenous: 26% in Azores, 47% in Madeira Archipelago and 42% in Canary Islands) and a high proportion of exotic introduced taxa (39% in Azores, 19% in Madeira Archipelago and 8% in Canary Islands).Based on recent IUCN Red-listing of Azorean arthropods, a large fraction of the endemic taxa is under high threat.

Project description:BackgroundAparapotamon, a freshwater crab genus endemic to China, includes 13 species. The distribution of Aparapotamon spans the first and second tiers of China's terrain ladder, showing great altitudinal differences. To study the molecular mechanisms of adaptive evolution in Aparapotamon, we performed evolutionary analyses, including morphological, geographical, and phylogenetic analyses and divergence time estimation. We sequenced the mitogenomes of Aparapotamon binchuanense and Aparapotamon huizeense for the first time and resequenced three other mitogenomes of Aparapotamon grahami and Aparapotamon gracilipedum. These sequences were combined with NCBI sequences to perform comparative mitogenome analysis of all 13 Aparapotamon species, revealing mitogenome arrangement and the characteristics of protein-coding and tRNA genes.ResultsA new species classification scheme of the genus Aparapotamon has been detected and verified by different aspects, including geographical, morphological, phylogenetics and comparative mitogenome analyses. Imprints from adaptive evolution were discovered in the mitochondrial genomes of group A, including the same codon loss at position 416 of the ND6 gene and the unique arrangement pattern of the tRNA-Ile gene. Multiple tRNA genes conserved or involved in adaptive evolution were detected. Two genes associated with altitudinal adaptation, ATP8 and ND6, which experienced positive selection, were identified for the first time in freshwater crabs.ConclusionsGeological movements of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Hengduan Mountains likely strongly impacted the speciation and differentiation of the four Aparapotamon groups. After some group A species dispersed from the Hengduan Mountain Range, new evolutionary characteristics emerged in their mitochondrial genomes, facilitating adaptation to the low-altitude environment of China's second terrain tier. Ultimately, group A species spread to high latitudes along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, showing faster evolutionary rates, higher species diversity and the widest distribution.

Project description:BackgroundThe decapods are a major group of crustaceans that includes shrimps, prawns, crayfishes, lobsters, and crabs. Several studies focused on the study of the digestive system of the decapods, constituted by the oesophagus, stomach, midgut tract, midgut gland, and hindgut. Nevertheless, in the midgut tract there are associated a set of organs called "midgut caeca", which are among the most controversial and less studied digestive organs of this group. This work used the common spider crab Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 as a model to resolve the origin, development, and potential role of the midgut caeca. Such organs were studied in the larvae (zoea I, zoea II, megalopa), first juveniles, and adult phases, being employed traditional and modern techniques: dissection, micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT), and light and electron microscopical analyses (TEM and SEM).ResultsThe common spider crab has a pair of anterior midgut caeca and a single posterior caecum that originate from the endoderm germ layer: they develop from the midgut tract, and their epithelium is composed by secretory cells while lacking a cuticle lining. The midgut caeca are small buds in the newly hatched larvae, enlarge linearly during the larval development, and then continue growing until became elongated and coiled blind-tubules in adults. The adult midgut caeca are internally folded to increase their inner surface. The electron microscopy observations showed that the midgut caeca are highly active organs with important macroapocrine and microapocrine secretory activity. Our results suggest that the role of the caeca might be related to the digestive enzyme secretion. The secretory activity should increase as the animal grows in size.ConclusionThe present study resolves the embryonic origin of the midgut caeca (endoderm derived organs), development (general lengthening starting from small buds), and role (active secretory organs). The secretory activity of the midgut caeca should be incorporated in the current models of the digestive physiology in different decapod taxa.
