Awareness of GMOs in terms of the Iran biosafety act: A case study of Tehran city.

ABSTRACT: Given emerging food supply challenges for the world population, Genetic Modified Organisms (GMOs) are referred to as a solution to the upcoming food security crisis. Besides technological advancement, other significant components such as public Awareness play an important role in national and international scientific regulations. Towards this, this study evaluated Tehranian consumers' Awareness (a sample including 946 respondents) about GMOs' risks and benefits, trust in governmental regulation, and the ways to obtain information about GMOs. Specific questionnaires were designed and distributed among participants in four districts in Tehran, and the collected data were used to conduct descriptive and inferential statistics by applying the ANOVA test. The Findings showed that 39 % with a p-value <0.01 of the public is unaware of GMOs in Tehran despite 20 years of commercialization, consumption, and controversial debate about GMOs in media and social networks. Therefore, the goals of public Awareness of science concerning biotechnology have not been met yet. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that public Awareness is not a crucial component in biotechnology advancement, and the other factors, including policymakers' desire, may have more weight.

Project description:Acceptance and willingness to receive the vaccine are among the main factors in the success or failure of a health system in implementing the vaccination program. The present study was conducted in Tehran, the political and economic capital of Iran, to determine the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine and identify its associated factors, and explain the most important barriers and acceptance strategies for vaccination. This research was a concurrent quantitative and qualitative mixed-method study. In the quantitative part, 1200 individuals aged more than 18 years were selected from the households in 22 districts of Tehran City, with a multistage stratified cluster sampling method. Two questionnaires were used to evaluate the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine acceptance determinants. The qualitative content analysis method addressed the influencing factors, as well as challenges and strategies related to the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine in four groups of Tehran inhabitants: the elderly, people with underlying diseases, healthcare workers, and the general population. The related data were simultaneously collected by applying in-depth semi-structural interviews and a data analysis process. Furthermore, we used the Graneheim and Lundman method for data analysis. We analyzed the data of 1200 people with a mean (SD) age of 46.4 (11.1) years, and approximately 58% of them were men. The vaccine acceptance was 83.6% (95% CI: 81.3-85.9). Among those who welcomed vaccination, 58% preferred the imported vaccines, 25% the Iranian ones, and 17% both. There was a significant association between the variables of age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.01-2.93), being single (AOR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.41-0.91), moderate pharmacotherapy adherence (AOR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.4-0.85), and the willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine. Qualitative study after interviewing 45 people from four study groups showed an insufficient social trust in healthcare system officials, pharmaceutical and vaccine production companies; distrust in the effectiveness of the vaccines, concerns about the vaccine adverse effects, being tracked by microchips after vaccination, traditional anti-vaccination movements, the feeling the inessentiality of vaccination, and uncertainty about the fair distribution of the vaccine. These concerns were the main challenges addressed by the study groups. A good proportion of Tehran residents reported their willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, they expressed their critical concerns, such as insufficient trust in the healthcare system, vaccine safeties, and adverse effects that were the significant barriers to vaccine acceptance. It seems that conflicts raised by the shortage of vaccines and their import due to the sanctions have led to intense desire and demand in the general population, and especially the elderly, for vaccination. Besides, vaccination phobia in some individuals requires further investigations.

Project description:The growing fetus is very sensitive to environmental conditions. There is limited and conflicting evidence about the short-term effects of exposure to air pollutants on the pregnancy outcome. In this time-stratified case-crossover study, the effect of several air pollutants (i.e. O3, CO, NO2, SO2, and PM2.5) on the occurrence of stillbirth was evaluated in Tehran (the capital of Iran) between December 2018 and March 2023. Using a quasi-Poisson regression model and distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM), we estimated the effect of exposure to air pollutants measured as lags (0 to 7 days) and cumulative average days (0-2, 0-6, and 0-14-day lag) before delivery on stillbirth. The association was adjusted for potential confounding factors including meteorological factors. During the study period in Tehran, 5311 stillbirths were reported. In single-pollutant models, during the entire year, SO2 (lag 1 day) and NO2 (lag 2 days) were found to have a direct and significant relationship with stillbirth. In the warm seasons, we found direct and inverse relationships between NO2 (lag 2 days) and PM2.5 (lag 4 days), respectively. In cold seasons, PM 2.5 (lag 1 day) and cumulative lag (0-2 days), SO2 (lag 1 day), and cumulative lag (0-2 and 0-6 days) were found to have direct and significant relationships with stillbirth. In two-pollutant models, SO2 & CO, and SO2 & O3, direct and significant associations were observed between SO2 exposures and stillbirth for the entire year. A similar pattern was observed for PM2.5 in combinations with NO2, and O3 and for NO2 in the two-pollutant model (O3 & NO2). However, in warm seasons, inverse associations were observed between PM2.5 and stillbirth in combinations with O3, NO2, and SO2, while NO2 showed a direct association in combinations with PM2.5, CO, and O3. In the cold seasons, direct and significant associations were observed between SO2 and stillbirth in model combinations with CO, O3, and NO2. This relationship was observed for PM2.5 in combination with CO, and NO2. Also, for CO in the two-pollutant model of CO & NO2. As a result, this study showed evidence of a relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution before birth, especially SO2, NO2, PM2.5, and CO with increased risk of stillbirth.
