Project description:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are an ideal platform to host catalytic metal centers for water oxidation (WO) owing to the high accessibility of water to the interlayer region, which makes all centers potentially reachable and activated. Herein, we report the syntheses of three iridium-doped zinc-aluminum LDHs (Ir-LDHs) nanomaterials (1-3, with about 80 nm of planar size and a thickness of 8 nm as derived by field emission scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction studies, respectively), carried out in the confined aqueous environment of reverse micelles, through a very simple and versatile procedure. These materials exhibit excellent catalytic performances in WO driven by NaIO4 at neutral pH and 25 °C, with an iridium content as low as 0.5 mol % (∼0.8 wt %), leading to quantitative oxygen yields (based on utilized NaIO4, turnover number up to ∼10,000). Nanomaterials 1-3 display the highest ever reported turnover frequency values (up to 402 min-1) for any heterogeneous and heterogenized catalyst, comparable only to those of the most efficient molecular iridium catalysts, tested under similar reaction conditions. The boost in activity can be traced to the increased surface area and pore volume (>5 times and 1 order of magnitude, respectively, higher than those of micrometric materials of size 0.3-1 μm) estimated for the nanosized particles, which guarantee higher noble metal accessibility. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies suggest that 1-3 nanomaterials, as-prepared and after catalysis, contain a mixture of isolated, single octahedral Ir(III) sites, with no evidence of Ir-Ir scattering from second-nearest neighbors, excluding the presence of IrO2 nanoparticles. The combination of the results obtained from XAS, elemental analysis, and ionic chromatography strongly suggests that iridium is embedded in the brucite-like structure of LDHs, having four hydroxyls and two chlorides as first neighbors. These results demonstrate that nanometric LDHs can be successfully exploited to engineer efficient WOCs, minimizing the amount of iridium used, consistent with the principle of the noble-metal atom economy.

Project description:Co and polypyrrole co-modified hierarchical CaAl-LDH microspheres (CCALP) were synthesized via hydrothermal and in situ polymerization methods. The synergistic effect of PPy and Co endowed CCALP with higher surface area and more reduction sites than CaAl-LDHs modified by Co or PPy alone, maintaining good recyclability for Cr(vi) removal efficiency over four cycles without any treatment. Compared to Co, PPy doping was the dominant reason for Cr(vi) reduction on CCALP. Under optimized conditions, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity reached 845.25 mg g-1, and the removal efficiency of Cr(vi) achieved 98.83%. The Langmuir model fitted well with the Cr(vi) adsorption on CCALP, supporting the monolayer adsorption hypothesis. The adsorption process followed the Avrami fractional kinetics (AFO) model, suggesting complex and multiple kinetic stages. Thermodynamic experiments confirmed that the adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic process. The density functional theory (DFT) and electrostatic potential (ESP) calculations confirmed that the oxygen-containing parts of Cr2O7 2- and HCrO4 - were the affinity sites, and the co-doping of Co and PPy significantly improved the Cr(vi) adsorption energy on CCALP. Therefore, the Cr(vi) removal mechanism on CCALP was proposed with electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, complexation and reduction.

Project description:The photoreduction for hazardous Cr(VI) in industrial wastewater has been considered a "green" approach with low-cost and easy-to-go operation. SnS2 is a promising narrow bandgap photocatalyst, but its low charge carrier separation efficiency should be solved first. In this work, N-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared and loaded onto SnS2 nanoparticles via an in situ method. The resulting composite samples (NC@SnS2) were characterized, and their photocatalytic performance was discussed. SnS2 nanoparticles were obtained as hexagonal ones with a bandgap of 2.19 eV. The optimal doping level for NC@SnS2 was citric acid: urea:SnS2 = 1.2 mmol:1.8 mmol:3.0 mmol. It showed an average diameter of 40 nm and improved photocatalytic performance, compared to pure SnS2, following a pseudo-first-order reaction with a kinetic rate constant of 0.1144 min-1. Over 97% of Cr(VI) was photo-reduced after 30 min. It was confirmed that modification of SnS2 with CQDs can not only improve the light-harvesting ability but also stimulate the charge separation, which therefore can enhance the photoreactivity of SnS2 toward Cr(VI) reduction. The excellent stability of NC@SnS2 indicates that it is promising to be practically used in industrial wastewater purification.

Project description:Herein, a 3.0%-Au/Sr0.70Ce0.20WO4 sample was prepared for the photocatalytic reduction of the Cr2O7 2- ion. The photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra. The Sr0.70Ce0.20WO4 sample presented a photocatalytic reduction activity that is better than those of the Ce-doped sample and the intrinsic sample. Thereafter, different metal elements, Cu, Ag, Au, and Pt, were used as cocatalysts, which were loaded on the Sr0.70Ce0.20WO4 sample. The 3.0%-Au/Sr0.70Ce0.20WO4 photocatalyst showed optimal photocatalytic reduction activity in a 8 vol % methanol solution (pH = 7) under visible light irradiation. The kinetic constant of the optimal one is 0.0039 min-1, which is 1.86 times that of the Sr0.70Ce0.20WO4 sample. The photocatalyst is stable enough after a 24 h photocatalytic experiment.

Project description:Cobalt-based layered hydroxides (LHs) stand out as one of the best families of electroactive materials for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, fundamental aspects such as the influence of the crystalline structure and its connection with the geometry of the catalytic sites remain poorly understood. Thus, to address this topic, we have conducted a thorough experimental and in silico study on the most important divalent Co-based LHs (i.e., α-LH, β-LH, and LDH), which allows us to understand the role of the layered structure and coordination environment of divalent Co atoms on the OER performance. The α-LH, containing both octahedral and tetrahedral sites, behaves as the best OER catalyst in comparison to the other phases, pointing out the role of the chemical nature of the crystalline structure. Indeed, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the experimental results, which can be explained in terms of the more favorable reconstruction into an active Co(III)-based oxyhydroxide-like phase (dehydrogenation process) as well as the significantly lower calculated overpotential across the OER mechanism for the α-LH structure (exhibiting lower Egap). Furthermore, ex situ X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy reveal the permanent transformation of the α-LH phase into a highly reactive oxyhydroxide-like stable structure under ambient conditions. Hence, our findings highlight the key role of tetrahedral sites on the electronic properties of the LH structure as well as their inherent reactivity toward OER catalysis, paving the way for the rational design of more efficient and low-maintenance electrocatalysts.

Project description:The enhancement of the photocatalytic performance of pristine WO3 was systematically adjusted due to its fast recombination rate and low reduction potential. A designed heterostructure photocatalyst was necessarily synthesised by Fe3+ metal ions doping into WO3 structure with and composition modification. In this study, we synthesised a retrievable Fe-doped WO3/SiO2 heterostructure using a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method. This heterostructure was then employed as an effective photocatalyst for the removal of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation. Enlarged photocatalytic reduction was observed over a synergetic 7.5 mol% Fe-doped WO3/SiO2-20 nanocomposite, resulting in dramatically increased activity compared with undoped WO3 and SiO2 nanomaterials under visible light illumination within 90 min. The presence of 7.5 mol% Fe3+ ion dopant in WO3 optimised electron-hole recombination, consequently reducing WO3 photocorrosion. After adding SiO2 nanoparticles, the binary WO3-SiO2 nanocomposite played roles as both adsorbent and photocatalyst to increase specific surface area. Thus, the 7.5 mol% Fe-doped WO3/SiO2-20 nanocomposite catalyst had more active sites on the surface of catalyst, and enhanced photocatalytic reduction was significantly achieved. The results showed 91.1% photocatalytic reduction over the optimum photocatalyst, with a photoreduction kinetic rate of 21.1 × 10-3 min-1, which was approximately four times faster than pristine WO3. Therefore, the superior optimal photocatalyst demonstrated reusability, with activities decreasing by only 9.8% after five cycles. The high photocatalytic performance and excellent stability of our photocatalyst indicate great potential for water pollution treatments.

Project description:Currently, conventional dimethoxymethane synthesis methods are environmentally unfriendly. Here, we report a photo-redox catalysis system to generate dimethoxymethane using a silver and tungsten co-modified blue titanium dioxide catalyst (Ag.W-BTO) by coupling CO2 reduction and CH3OH oxidation under mild conditions. The Ag.W-BTO structure and its electron and hole transfer are comprehensively investigated by combining advanced characterizations and theoretical studies. Strikingly, Ag.W-BTO achieve a record photocatalytic activity of 5702.49 µmol g-1 with 92.08% dimethoxymethane selectivity in 9 h of ultraviolet-visible irradiation without sacrificial agents. Systematic isotope labeling experiments, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform analysis, and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ag and W species respectively catalyze CO2 conversion to *CH2O and CH3OH oxidation to *CH3O. Subsequently, an asymmetric carbon-oxygen coupling process between these two crucial intermediates produces dimethoxymethane. This work presents a CO2 photocatalytic reduction system for multi-carbon production to meet the objectives of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality.

Project description:The rapid growth of industrialization has led to the uncontrolled pollution of the environment, and rapid action is needed. This study synthesized Ag/TiO2/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nano photocatalyst for promising light-derived photocatalytic removal of heavy metal ions. The design of experiment (DOE) was used to study the effect of important factors (pH, reaction time, and photocatalyst dosage) to maximize the final performance of the photocatalyst. In the optimized condition, the Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst removed more than 94% of Cr6+ in 180 min, and the efficiency was more than 70% for Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ metal ions. The adsorption of the heavy metal ions on the photocatalyst was described well with the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order linear kinetic model fitted with the experimental data. The nano-photocatalyst's stability was confirmed after maintaining its performance for five successive runs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for the heavy metal ions removal can be attributed to the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles (electron transfer and plasmonic fields mechanisms) and PVA, which delayed the recombination of electron-hole. The synthesized ternary Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst showed promising performance for the elimination of heavy metal ions and can be used for environmental remediation purposes.

Project description:Defect engineering has proven to be one of the most effective approaches for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts. Current methods to create defects typically follow a top-down strategy, cutting down the pristine materials into fragmented pieces with surface defects yet also heavily destroying the framework of materials that imposes restrictions on the further improvements in catalytic activity. Herein, we describe a bottom-up strategy to prepare free-standing NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoplatelets with abundant internal defects by controlling their growth behavior in acidic conditions. Our best-performing nanoplatelets exhibited the lowest overpotential of 241 mV and the lowest Tafel slope of 43 mV/dec for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, superior to the pristine LDHs and other reference cation-defective LDHs obtained by traditional etching methods. Using both material characterization and density functional theory (DFT) simulation has enabled us to develop relationships between the structure and electrochemical properties of these catalysts, suggesting that the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of nanoplatelets mainly results from their defect-abundant structure and stable layered framework with enhanced exposure of the (001) surface.

Project description:We report a study on the synthesis of TiO2/Fe2O3 (TF) nanocomposites and their photocatalytic performance under visible-light irradiation. The characterization of structure and morphology shows that hematite Fe2O3 was deposited on anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with particle sizes in the range of 20-100 nm. In contrast to pure TiO2 and pure Fe2O3, the nanocomposites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity. For example, the photoreduction efficiency of TF0.5 reaches 100% for a 100 ppm Cr(vi) solution within 160 minutes. The photochemical properties were studied by various methods. Finally, we conclude that the excellent performance of the photocatalysts is mainly attributed to two aspects: the enhanced absorption of visible light and the synergistic effect of an internal electric field at the heterojunction and citric acid for promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs.
