Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers that make these materials suitable for use as excellent scaffold in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we synthesize a layered two-dimensional (2D) COF (TADP-COF) through the condensation reaction between four-branched 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (TAPP) and linear 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (Dha) and 1,4-phthalaldehyde (PA) building blocks. Porphyrin units, imine and hydroxyl groups together with imines can provide wide coordination sites for metal docking. Using a programmed synthetic procedure, Cu(ii) ions first coordinated with the imine groups in conjunction with their adjacent hydroxyl groups, and porphyrin units and subsequently added Pd(ii) ions occupied the remaining imine sites in the space between adjacent COF layers. The bimetallic Pd(ii)/Cu(ii)@TADP-COF showed high catalytic activity in a one-pot coupling/oxidation cascade reaction in water. The high surface area, one-dimensional (1D) open channel structure and predesigned catalytic active sites of this material make it ideal candidate for use as heterogeneous catalyst in a wide range of catalytic reactions.

Project description:Ammonia production plays a central role in modern industry and agriculture with a continuous surge in its demand, yet the current industrial Haber-Bosch process suffers from low energy efficiency and accounts for high carbon emissions. Direct electrochemical conversion of nitrate to ammonia therefore emerges as an appealing approach with satisfactory sustainability while reducing the environmental impact from nitrate pollution. To this end, electrocatalysts for efficient conversion of eight-electron nitrate to ammonia require collective contributions at least from high-density reactive sites, selective reaction pathways, efficient multielectron transfer, and multiproton transport processes. Here, we report a catalytic metal-organic framework (two-dimensional (2D) In-MOF In8) catalyst integrated with multiple functional motifs with atomic precision, including uniformly dispersed, high-density, single-atom catalytic sites, high proton conductivity (efficient proton transport channel), high electron conductivity (promoted by the redox-active ligands), and confined microporous environments. These eventually lead to a direct and efficient electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia and record high yield rate, FE, and selectivity for NH3 production. A novel "dynamic ligand dissociation" mechanism provides an unprecedented working principle that allows for the use of a high-quality MOF crystalline structure to function as highly ordered, high-density, single-atom catalyst (SAC)-like catalytic systems and ensures the maximum utilization of the metal centers within the MOF structure. Further, the atomically precise assembly of multiple functional motifs within a MOF catalyst offers an effective and facile strategy for the future development of framework-based enzyme-mimic systems.

Project description:Although metal-organic frameworks featuring coordinatively unsaturated transition metal sites are relatively common, examples with redox-active cations are rare. In this report, we describe the electrochemically mediated synthesis of TiIII-MIL-101 from the inexpensive Ti4+ precursor TiCl4. The framework obtained via electrosynthesis is identical to that prepared from the significantly more expensive and air-sensitive starting material TiCl3. The above electrosynthetic strategy was also extended to prepare TiIII-MIL-100 and two high-quality extended TiIII-MIL structures, for the first time. These materials represent examples of titanium-based MOFs with extended pore structures. Several physical methods demonstrate that these materials are superior in quality to samples of the analogous MOFs prepared via conventional routes from starting exogenous TiCl3. Given the ease with which the electrosyntheses may be carried out and their compatibility with a broad range of bridging ligands, we expect that this new methodology will find utility for the synthesis of a number of novel materials containing coordinatively unsaturated, redox-active metal cations.

Project description:Bismuth-based organic frameworks (BiOFs) can display interesting phosphorescent properties, but the relationship between structure and optical activity remains underexplored. The structure-dependent phosphorescence properties in the BiOFs are investigated using different multidentate ligands. In-depth analysis of the luminescence properties confirms that the densely packed framework shows long-lasting phosphorescence at room temperature, owing to an efficient electron-hole separation. The combination of spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal structural analysis provides important insights into the emission control through BiOFs structural change, which can be a useful strategy for modulating the optical properties of various metal organic frameworks. Furthermore, taking the advantage of long-lasting phosphorescence, the potential usage as an eco-friendly photocatalyst is demonstrated. Bismuth organic frameworks can display interesting phosphorescent properties, but the relationship between structure and optical activity remains underexplored. Here two bismuth organic frameworks with differing bismuth coordination number and intermetallic distance are contrasted.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterostructures will be greatly advantageous to enhance catalytic performance because they increase the contact surface and charge transfer. Herein, a novel 2D heterostructure named CeO2@NiFe-MOFs, in which monolayer NiFe-MOFs is coordinated with ceria (CeO2) to improve catalytic and stability performance, is successfully constructed by the strategy of in situ growth on the surface of ultrathin CeO2 nanosheets being functionalized with monolayer carboxylic acid groups. The 2D heterostructure possesses a sandwich structure, where monolayer NiFe-MOFs are coordinated to both the top and bottom surface of CeO2 nanosheets via joining carboxylic acid groups. In particular, CeO2 with robust coordination plays a significant role in the anchoring of carboxylic acid groups and binding strength of heterostructures. The 2D CeO2@NiFe-MOF heterostructure with a joint effect of metal-ligand coordination not only presents good structural stability but also significantly enhances the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) efficiencies in comparison to bare NiFe-MOFs, achieving a current density of 20 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 248 mV as well as durability for at least 40 h. Meanwhile, the electronics, optics, band gap energy and local strains of CeO2 decorated with 2D NiFe-MOFs are different to the properties of bare CeO2. Our study on the construction of an ultrathin CeO2 surface-coordinated and confined MOF layer may pave a new way for novel 2D MOF composites/heterostructures or multi-functional 2D CeO2 materials to be used in energy conversion or other fields.

Project description:Compared to indirect framework modification, synthetic control of cluster composition can be used to gain direct access to catalytic activities exclusive of specific metal combinations. We demonstrate this concept by testing the aminolysis of epoxides with a family of isostructural mesoporous frameworks featuring five combinations of homometallic and heterobimetallic metal-oxo trimers (Fe3, Ti3, TiFe2, TiCo2, and TiNi2). Only TiFe2 nodes display activities comparable to benchmark catalysts based on grafting of strong acids, which here originate from the combination of Lewis Ti4+ and Brønsted Fe3+-OH acid sites. The applicability of MUV-101(Fe) to the synthesis of β-amino alcohols is demonstrated with a scope that also includes the gram scale synthesis of propranolol, a natural β-blocker listed as an essential medicine by the World Health Organization, with excellent yield and selectivity.

Project description:The recognition of defect chemistry as a true synthetic tool for targeted creation of defects and controllable performance remains limited by the pool of frameworks explored. The value of defect engineering in controlling the properties of defective frameworks has been beautifully exemplified and largely demonstrated with UiO-type materials based on Zr(iv) nodes. However, titanium-organic frameworks remain largely unexplored in this context arguably due to the complex chemistry in solution of Ti(iv) and the difficulties in growing crystalline solids. We report a systematic study on the ability of mono- and dicarboxylic modulators (benzoic and isophthalic acid) to promote defect creation in the heterometallic Ti-MOF of the MUV-10 family. Our results indicate that both acids behave as capping modulators at high concentrations, but isophthalic acid is a more efficient defect promoter, yielding defective phases with nearly 40% of missing linkers. Our computational results suggest that this difference cannot be solely ascribed to relative changes in acidity but to the ability of this bidentate linker in compensating the structural distortion and energy penalty imposed by breaking the connectivity of the underlying framework.

Project description:Exploitation of new titanium metal-organic frameworks (Ti-MOFs) with high crystallinity has been attracting great attention due to their vast application potential in photocatalysis. Herein a versatile synthetic strategy, namely, High Valence Metathesis and Oxidation (HVMO), is developed to synthesize a series of Ti-MOFs with predesigned topologies and structures. The crystallinity of these Ti-MOFs was well maintained throughout, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and gas adsorption measurements. Significantly, there were only a few examples of Ti-MOFs, not to mention a general synthetic strategy for various kinds of Ti-MOFs in the literature. This contribution also illustrates the intriguing potential of Ti-MOF platforms in photocatalysis.

Project description:Titanium-organic frameworks offer distinctive opportunities in the realm of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to the integration of intrinsic photoactivity or redox versatility in porous architectures with ultrahigh stability. Unfortunately, the high polarizing power of Ti4+ cations makes them prone to hydrolysis, thus preventing the systematic design of these types of frameworks. We illustrate the use of heterobimetallic cluster Ti2Ca2 as a persistent building unit compatible with the isoreticular design of titanium frameworks. The MUV-12(X) and MUV-12(Y) series can be all synthesized as single crystals by using linkers of varying functionalization and size for the formation of the nets with tailorable porosity and degree of interpenetration. Following the generalization of this approach, we also gain rational control over interpenetration in these nets by designing linkers with varying degrees of steric hindrance to eliminate stacking interactions and access the highest gravimetric surface area reported for titanium(IV) MOFs (3000 m2 g-1).
