Project description:In this paper, a composite learning control scheme was proposed for underactuated marine surface vessels (MSVs) subject to unknown dynamics, time-varying external disturbances and output constraints. Based on the line-of-sight (LOS) approach, the underactuation problem of the MSVs was addressed. To deal with the problem of output constraint, the barrier Lyapunov function-based method was utilized to ensure that the output error will never violate the constraint. The composite neural networks (NNs) are employed to approximate unknown dynamics. The prediction errors can be obtained using the serial-parallel estimation model (SPEM). Both the prediction errors and the tracking errors were employed to construct the NN weight updating. Using approximation information, the disturbance observers were designed to estimate unknown time-varying disturbances. The stability analysis via the Lyapunov approach indicates that all signals of unmanned marine surface vessels are uniformly ultimate boundedness. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Project description:In this work, we propose a robust self-learning control scheme based on action-dependent heuristic dynamic programming (ADHDP) to tackle the 3D trajectory tracking control problem of underactuated uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) with uncertain dynamics and time-varying ocean disturbances. Initially, the radial basis function neural network is introduced to convert the compound uncertain element, comprising uncertain dynamics and time-varying ocean disturbances, into a linear parametric form with just one unknown parameter. Then, to improve the tracking performance of the UUVs trajectory tracking closed-loop control system, an actor-critic neural network structure based on ADHDP technology is introduced to adaptively adjust the weights of the action-critic network, optimizing the performance index function. Finally, an ADHDP-based robust self-learning control scheme is constructed, which makes the UUVs closed-loop system have good robustness and control performance. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that all signals in the UUVs trajectory tracking closed-loop control system are bounded. The simulation results for the UUVs validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Project description:This paper investigates the problem of global asymptotic stabilization of underactuated surface vessels (USVs) with input saturation. A novel input transformation is presented, so that the USV system can be transformed to a cascade structure. For the obtained system, the improved fractional power control laws are proposed to ensure input signals do not exceed actuator constraints and enhance convergence rates. Finally, stabilization and parameter optimization algorithm of USVs are proposed. Simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method.

Project description:An adaptive finite time trajectory tracking control method is presented for underactuated unmanned marine surface vessels (MSVs) by employing neural networks to approximate system uncertainties. The proposed algorithm is developed by combining event-triggered control (ETC) and finite-time convergence (FTC) techniques. The dynamic event-triggered condition is adopted to avert the frequent acting of actuators using an adjustable triggered variable to regulate the minimal inter-event times. While solving the system uncertainties and asymmetric input saturation, an adaptive neural networks based backstepping controller is designed based on FTC under bounded disturbances. In addition, via Lyapunov approach it is proved that all signals in the closed-loop system are semi-global uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, simulations results are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of this proposed scheme.

Project description:This work addresses the challenge of underactuated pattern generation in continuous multistable structures. The examined configuration is a slender membrane which can concurrently sustain two different equilibria states, separated by transition regions, and is actuated by a viscous fluid. We first demonstrate the formation and motion of a single transition region and then sequencing of several such moving transition regions to achieve arbitrary patterns by controlling the inlet pressure of the actuating fluid. Finally, we show that nonuniform membrane properties, along with transient dynamics of the fluid, can be leveraged to directly snap through any segment of the membrane.

Project description:This paper focuses on the autonomous recovery maneuvers of an unknown underactuated practical catamaran, which returns to its initial position corresponding to the man overboard (MOB) by simply adjusting the rate of turn. This paper investigates the completion of model-based path following control for not only the traditional Williamson turn, but also complex recovery routes under time-varying disturbances. The main difficulty of model-based path following control for predicting the hydrodynamic derivatives of a practical catamaran was solved by the approximated calculation of a diagonal matrix. The second key problem of differential calculation for an underactuated model in the case of complex reference trajectories under severe disturbances was investigated. Even though this paper employs a diagonal matrix with unknown nonlinear terms, the experimental test using a small craft with payloads by remote control demonstrated the sway force per yaw moment in turning cases. Adaptive backstepping mechanisms with unknown parameters were proven by the Lyapunov theory as well as the passive-boundedness of the sway dynamics, guaranteeing the stability of sway motion in the case of unavailable sway control. The effectiveness of the algorithms of the guiding concept and error dynamics is demonstrated by the numerical simulations.

Project description:Nowadays, the development of new metaheuristics for solving optimization problems is a topic of interest in the scientific community. In the literature, a large number of techniques of this kind can be found. Anyway, there are many recently proposed techniques, such as the artificial bee colony and imperialist competitive algorithm. This paper is focused on one recently published technique, the one called Golden Ball (GB). The GB is a multiple-population metaheuristic based on soccer concepts. Although it was designed to solve combinatorial optimization problems, until now, it has only been tested with two simple routing problems: the traveling salesman problem and the capacitated vehicle routing problem. In this paper, the GB is applied to four different combinatorial optimization problems. Two of them are routing problems, which are more complex than the previously used ones: the asymmetric traveling salesman problem and the vehicle routing problem with backhauls. Additionally, one constraint satisfaction problem (the n-queen problem) and one combinatorial design problem (the one-dimensional bin packing problem) have also been used. The outcomes obtained by GB are compared with the ones got by two different genetic algorithms and two distributed genetic algorithms. Additionally, two statistical tests are conducted to compare these results.

Project description:This paper presents methods for the determination of players' positions and contact time points by tracking the players and the ball in beach volleyball videos. Two player tracking methods are compared, a classical particle filter and a rigid grid integral histogram tracker. Due to mutual occlusion of the players and the camera perspective, results are best for the front players, with 74,6% and 82,6% of correctly tracked frames for the particle method and the integral histogram method, respectively. Results suggest an improved robustness against player confusion between different particle sets when tracking with a rigid grid approach. Faster processing and less player confusions make this method superior to the classical particle filter. Two different ball tracking methods are used that detect ball candidates from movement difference images using a background subtraction algorithm. Ball trajectories are estimated and interpolated from parabolic flight equations. The tracking accuracy of the ball is 54,2% for the trajectory growth method and 42,1% for the Hough line detection method. Tracking results of over 90% from the literature could not be confirmed. Ball contact frames were estimated from parabolic trajectory intersection, resulting in 48,9% of correctly estimated ball contact points.

Project description:In this article, Smooth Super-twisting Sliding Mode Control (SSTWSMC) is investigated for the class of underactuated system. In underactuated systems, the control design is not directly applicable as for other systems (known as fully actuated systems). Therefore, at initial step, a nonlinear uncertain model of systems is transformed into the controllable canonical form, and then Smooth Super Twisting (SSTW) based Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is devised for the control design purpose for the considered class. In addition, closed loop stability of the proposed technique is presented in a fascinating way. The effectiveness and supremacy of the proposed control technique is proven by extensive analysis between conventional Sliding Mode Control (SMC), Super twisting (STW) sliding mode control and Smooth Super-twisting Sliding Mode Control (SSTWSMC). The comprehensive analysis evaluates the attributes like robustness enhancement, settling time, control effort, chattering reduction, overshoot, sliding mode convergence, etc. and is supported by simulations as well as practical implementation on ball and beam balancer (which is considered as application example).

Project description:The preferred conformations of peptides and proteins are dependent on local interactions that bias the conformational ensemble. The n→π* interaction between consecutive carbonyls promotes compact conformations, including the α-helix and polyproline II helix. In order to further understand the n→π* interaction and to develop methods to promote defined conformational preferences through acyl N-capping motifs, a series of peptides was synthesized in which the electronic and steric properties of the acyl group were modified. Using NMR spectroscopy, van't Hoff analysis of enthalpies, X-ray crystallography, and computational investigations, we observed that more electron-rich donor carbonyls (pivaloyl, iso-butyryl, propionyl) promote stronger n→π* interactions and more compact conformations than acetyl or less electron-rich donor carbonyls (methoxyacetyl, fluoroacetyl, formyl). X-ray crystallography indicates a strong, electronically tunable preference for the α-helix conformation, as observed directly on the φ and ψ torsion angles. Electron-donating acyl groups promote the α-helical conformation, even in the absence of the hydrogen bonding that stabilizes the α-helix. In contrast, electron-withdrawing acyl groups led to more extended conformations. More sterically demanding groups can promote trans amide bonds independent of the electronic effect on n→π* interactions. Chloroacetyl groups additionally promote n→π* interactions through the interaction of the chlorine lone pair with the proximal carbonyl π*. These data provide additional support for an important role of n→π* interactions in the conformational ensemble of disordered or unfolded proteins. Moreover, this work suggests that readily incorporated acyl N-capping motifs that modulate n→π* interactions may be employed rationally to promote conformational biases in peptides, with potential applications in molecular design and medicinal chemistry.
