Transitioning from MODIS to VIIRS Global Water Reservoir Product.

ABSTRACT: Reservoirs play a crucial role in regulating water availability and enhancing water security. Here, we develop NASA's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) based Global Water Reservoir (GWR) product, consisting of measurements of reservoir area, elevation, storage, evaporation rate, and evaporation loss for 164 large global reservoirs. The dataset is available at 8-day and monthly temporal resolutions. Since the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is close to the end of its life, we further evaluated the consistency between MODIS and VIIRS-based GWR to ensure continuity to the 20+ year MODIS GWR product. Independent assessment of VIIRS reservoir storage (8-day) retrievals against in-situ measurements shows an average of R² = 0.84, RMSE = 0.47 km³, and NRMSE = 16.45%. The evaporation rate has an average of R² = 0.56, RMSE = 1.32 mm/day, and NRMSE = 28.14%. Furthermore, results show good consistency (R² ≥ 0.90) between the VIIRS and MODIS-based product components, confirming that long-term data continuity can be achieved. This dataset can provide valuable insights for long-term trend analysis, hydrological modeling, and understanding hydroclimatic extremes in the context of reservoirs.

Project description:Four wave-propelled autonomous vehicles (Wave Gliders) instrumented with a variety of oceanographic and meteorological sensors were launched from San Francisco, CA in November 2011 for a trans-Pacific (Pac-X) voyage to test platform endurance. Two arrived in Australia, one in Dec 2012 and one in February 2013, while the two destined for Japan both ran into technical difficulties and did not arrive at their destination. The gliders were all equipped with sensors to measure temperature, salinity, turbidity, oxygen, and both chlorophyll and oil fluorescence. Here we conduct an initial assessment of the data set, noting necessary quality control steps and instrument utility. We conduct a validation of the Pac-X dataset by comparing the glider data to equivalent, or near-equivalent, satellite measurements. Sea surface temperature and salinity compared well to satellite measurements. Chl fluorescence from the gliders was more poorly correlated, with substantial between glider variability. Both turbidity and oil CDOM sensors were compromised to some degree by interfering processes. The well-known diel cycle in chlorophyll fluorescence was observed suggesting that mapping physiological data over large scales is possible. The gliders captured the Pacific Ocean's major oceanographic features including the increased chlorophyll biomass of the California Current and equatorial upwelling. A comparison of satellite sea surface salinity (Aquarius) and glider-measured salinity revealed thin low salinity lenses in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. One glider survived a direct passage through a tropical cyclone. Two gliders traversed an open ocean phytoplankton bloom; extensive spiking in the chlorophyll fluorescence data is consistent with aggregation and highlights another potential future use for the gliders. On long missions, redundant instrumentation would aid in interpreting unusual data streams, as well as a means to periodically image the sensor heads. Instrument placement is critical to minimize bubble-related problems in the data.

Project description:We investigated the view angle dependence of domain mean Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) liquid water path (LWP) and that of corresponding cloud optical thickness, effective radius, and liquid cloud fraction as proxy for plane-parallel retrieval biases. Independent Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS LWP was used to corroborate that the observed variations with sun-view geometry were not severely affected by seasonal/latitudinal changes in cloud properties. Microwave retrievals showed generally small (<10%) cross-swath variations. The view angle (cross-swath) dependence of MODIS optical thickness was weaker in backscatter than forward scatter directions and transitioned from mild ∩ shape to stronger ∪ shape as heterogeneity, sun angle, or latitude increased. The 2.2 µm effective radius variations always had a ∪ shape, which became pronounced and asymmetric toward forward scatter in the most heterogeneous clouds and/or at the lowest sun. Cloud fraction had the strongest and always ∪-shaped view angle dependence. As a result, in-cloud MODIS cloud liquid water path (CLWP) showed surprisingly good view angle (cross-swath) consistency, usually comparable to that of microwave retrievals, due to cancelation between optical thickness and effective radius biases. Larger (20-40%) nadir-relative increases were observed in the most extreme heterogeneity and sun angle bins, that is, typically in the polar regions, which, however, constituted only 3-8% of retrievals. The good consistency of MODIS in-cloud CLWP was lost for gridbox mean LWP, which was dominated by the strong cloud fraction increase with view angle. More worryingly, MODIS LWP exhibited significant and systematic absolute increases with heterogeneity and sun angle that is not present in microwave LWP.Key pointsMicrowave LWP shows small overall and cross-swath variationsMODIS in-cloud LWP also shows good view angle consistency in most casesMODIS retrievals show strong overall increase with heterogeneity and sun angle.
