Ultrabroadband high-resolution silicon RF-photonic beamformer.

ABSTRACT: Microwave photonics aims to overcome the limitations of radiofrequency devices and systems by leveraging the unique properties of optics in terms of low loss and power consumption, broadband operation, immunity to interference and tunability. This enables versatile functions like beam steering, crucial in emerging applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5/6G networks. The main problem with current photonic beamforming architectures is that there is a tradeoff between resolution and bandwidth, which has not yet been solved. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel switched optical delay line beamformer architecture that is capable of achieving the desired maximum resolution (i.e., 2^M pointing angles for M-bit coding) and provides broadband operation simultaneously. The concept is demonstrated by means of a compact (8 × 3 mm²) 8 (5-bit) delay line Silicon Photonic chip implementation capable of addressing 32 pointing angles and offering 20 GHz bandwidth operation.

High-resolution, on-chip RF photonic signal processor using Brillouin gain shaping and RF interference.

Project description:Integrated microwave photonics has strongly emerged as a next-generation technology to address limitations of conventional RF electronics for wireless communications. High-resolution RF signal processing still remains a challenge due to limitations in technology that offer sub-GHz spectral resolution, in particular at high carrier frequencies. In this paper, we present an on-chip high-resolution RF signal processor, capable of providing high-suppression spectral filtering, large phase shifts and ns-scale time delays. This was achieved through tailoring of the Brillouin gain profiles using Stokes and anti-Stokes resonances combined with RF interferometry on a low-loss photonic chip with strong opto-acoustic interactions. Using an optical power of <40 mW, reconfigurable filters with a bandwidth of ~20 MHz and an extinction ratio in excess of 30 dB are synthesized. Through the concept of vector addition of RF signals we demonstrate, almost an order of magnitude amplification in the phase and delay compared to devices purely based upon the slow-light effect of Brillouin scattering. This concept allows for versatile and power-efficient manipulation of the amplitude and phase of RF signals on a photonic chip for applications in wireless communications including software defined radios and beam forming.

Silicon photonic microresonator-based high-resolution line-by-line pulse shaping.

Project description:Optical pulse shaping stands as a formidable technique in ultrafast optics, radio-frequency photonics, and quantum communications. While existing systems rely on bulk optics or integrated platforms with planar waveguide sections for spatial dispersion, they face limitations in achieving finer (few- or sub-GHz) spectrum control. These methods either demand considerable space or suffer from pronounced phase errors and optical losses when assembled to achieve fine resolution. Addressing these challenges, we present a foundry-fabricated six-channel silicon photonic shaper using microresonator filter banks with inline phase control and high spectral resolution. Leveraging existing comb-based spectroscopic techniques, we devise a system to mitigate thermal crosstalk and enable the versatile use of our on-chip shaper. Our results demonstrate the shaper's ability to phase-compensate six comb lines at tunable channel spacings of 3, 4, and 5 GHz. Specifically, at a 3 GHz channel spacing, we showcase the generation of arbitrary waveforms in the time domain. This scalable design and control scheme holds promise in meeting future demands for high-precision spectral shaping capabilities.

Denoising-autoencoder-facilitated MEMS computational spectrometer with enhanced resolution on a silicon photonic chip.

Project description:Silicon photonics enables the construction of chip-scale spectrometers, in which those using a single tunable interferometer provide a simple and cost-effective solution. Among various tuning mechanisms, electrostatic MEMS reconfiguration stands out as an ideal candidate, given its high tuning efficiency and ultra-low power consumption. Nonetheless, MEMS devices face significant noise challenges arising from their susceptible minuscule components, adversely impacting spectral resolution. Here, we propose a distinct paradigm of spectrometers through synergizing an easily-fabricated MEMS-reconfigurable low-loss waveguide coupler on a silicon photonic chip and a convolutional autoencoder denoising (CAED) mechanism. The spectrometer offers a 300 nm bandwidth and a reconstruction resolution of 0.3 nm in a noise-free condition. In a noisy environment with a signal-to-noise ratio as low as 30 dB, the reconstruction resolution of the interferograms processed by the CAED exhibits an enhancement from 1.2 to 0.4 nm, approaching the noise-free value. Our technology is envisaged to provide a powerful and cost-effective solution for applications requiring accurate, broadband, and energy-efficient spectral analysis.

Neuromorphic photonic networks using silicon photonic weight banks.

Project description:Photonic systems for high-performance information processing have attracted renewed interest. Neuromorphic silicon photonics has the potential to integrate processing functions that vastly exceed the capabilities of electronics. We report first observations of a recurrent silicon photonic neural network, in which connections are configured by microring weight banks. A mathematical isomorphism between the silicon photonic circuit and a continuous neural network model is demonstrated through dynamical bifurcation analysis. Exploiting this isomorphism, a simulated 24-node silicon photonic neural network is programmed using "neural compiler" to solve a differential system emulation task. A 294-fold acceleration against a conventional benchmark is predicted. We also propose and derive power consumption analysis for modulator-class neurons that, as opposed to laser-class neurons, are compatible with silicon photonic platforms. At increased scale, Neuromorphic silicon photonics could access new regimes of ultrafast information processing for radio, control, and scientific computing.

High-performance silicon photonic single-sideband modulators for cold-atom interferometry.

Project description:The laser system is the most complex component of a light-pulse atom interferometer (LPAI), controlling frequencies and intensities of multiple laser beams to configure quantum gravity and inertial sensors. Its main functions include cold-atom generation, state preparation, state-selective detection, and generating a coherent two-photon process for the light-pulse sequence. To achieve substantial miniaturization and ruggedization, we integrate key laser system functions onto a photonic integrated circuit. Our study focuses on a high-performance silicon photonic suppressed-carrier single-sideband (SC-SSB) modulator at 1560 nanometers, capable of dynamic frequency shifting within the LPAI. By independently controlling radio frequency (RF) channels, we achieve 30-decibel carrier suppression and unprecedented 47.8-decibel sideband suppression at peak conversion efficiency of -6.846 decibels (20.7%). We investigate imbalances in both amplitudes and phases between the RF signals. Using this modulator, we demonstrate cold-atom generation, state-selective detection, and atom interferometer fringes to estimate gravitational acceleration, g ≈ 9.77 ± 0.01 meters per second squared, in a rubidium (87Rb) atom system.

Microcomb-driven silicon photonic systems.

Project description:Microcombs have sparked a surge of applications over the past decade, ranging from optical communications to metrology1-4. Despite their diverse deployment, most microcomb-based systems rely on a large amount of bulky elements and equipment to fulfil their desired functions, which is complicated, expensive and power consuming. By contrast, foundry-based silicon photonics (SiPh) has had remarkable success in providing versatile functionality in a scalable and low-cost manner5-7, but its available chip-based light sources lack the capacity for parallelization, which limits the scope of SiPh applications. Here we combine these two technologies by using a power-efficient and operationally simple aluminium-gallium-arsenide-on-insulator microcomb source to drive complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor SiPh engines. We present two important chip-scale photonic systems for optical data transmission and microwave photonics, respectively. A microcomb-based integrated photonic data link is demonstrated, based on a pulse-amplitude four-level modulation scheme with a two-terabit-per-second aggregate rate, and a highly reconfigurable microwave photonic filter with a high level of integration is constructed using a time-stretch approach. Such synergy of a microcomb and SiPh integrated components is an essential step towards the next generation of fully integrated photonic systems.

CMOS compatible high-Q photonic crystal nanocavity fabricated with photolithography on silicon photonic platform.

Project description:Progress on the fabrication of ultrahigh-Q photonic-crystal nanocavities (PhC-NCs) has revealed the prospect for new applications including silicon Raman lasers that require a strong confinement of light. Among various PhC-NCs, the highest Q has been recorded with silicon. On the other hand, microcavity is one of the basic building blocks in silicon photonics. However, the fusion between PhC-NCs and silicon photonics has yet to be exploited, since PhC-NCs are usually fabricated with electron-beam lithography and require an air-bridge structure. Here we show that a 2D-PhC-NC fabricated with deep-UV photolithography on a silica-clad silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure will exhibit a high-Q of 2.2 × 10(5) with a mode-volume of ~ 1.7(λ/n)(3). This is the highest Q demonstrated with photolithography. We also show that this device exhibits an efficient thermal diffusion and enables high-speed switching. The demonstration of the photolithographic fabrication of high-Q silica-clad PhC-NCs will open possibility for mass-manufacturing and boost the fusion between silicon photonics and CMOS devices.

High-Resolution Photonic Force Microscopy Based on Sharp Nanofabricated Tips.

Project description:Although near-field imaging techniques reach sub-nanometer resolution on rigid samples, it remains extremely challenging to image soft interfaces, such as biological membranes, due to the deformations induced by the probe. In photonic force microscopy, optical tweezers are used to manipulate and measure the scanning probe, allowing imaging of soft materials without force-induced artifacts. However, the size of the optically trapped probe still limits the maximum resolution. Here, we show a novel and simple nanofabrication protocol to massively produce optically trappable quartz particles which mimic the sharp tips of atomic force microscopy. Imaging rigid nanostructures with our tips, we resolve features smaller than 80 nm. Scanning the membrane of living malaria-infected red blood cells reveals, with no visible artifacts, submicron features termed knobs, related to the parasite activity. The use of nanoengineered particles in photonic force microscopy opens the way to imaging soft samples at high resolution.

Biofunctionalization of Multiplexed Silicon Photonic Biosensors.

Project description:Silicon photonic (SiP) sensors offer a promising platform for robust and low-cost decentralized diagnostics due to their high scalability, low limit of detection, and ability to integrate multiple sensors for multiplexed analyte detection. Their CMOS-compatible fabrication enables chip-scale miniaturization, high scalability, and low-cost mass production. Sensitive, specific detection with silicon photonic sensors is afforded through biofunctionalization of the sensor surface; consequently, this functionalization chemistry is inextricably linked to sensor performance. In this review, we first highlight the biofunctionalization needs for SiP biosensors, including sensitivity, specificity, cost, shelf-stability, and replicability and establish a set of performance criteria. We then benchmark biofunctionalization strategies for SiP biosensors against these criteria, organizing the review around three key aspects: bioreceptor selection, immobilization strategies, and patterning techniques. First, we evaluate bioreceptors, including antibodies, aptamers, nucleic acid probes, molecularly imprinted polymers, peptides, glycans, and lectins. We then compare adsorption, bioaffinity, and covalent chemistries for immobilizing bioreceptors on SiP surfaces. Finally, we compare biopatterning techniques for spatially controlling and multiplexing the biofunctionalization of SiP sensors, including microcontact printing, pin- and pipette-based spotting, microfluidic patterning in channels, inkjet printing, and microfluidic probes.

Silicon photonic acoustic detector (SPADE) using a silicon nitride microring resonator.

Project description:Silicon photonics is an emerging platform for acoustic sensing, offering exceptional miniaturization and sensitivity. While efforts have focused on silicon-based resonators, silicon nitride resonators can potentially achieve higher Q-factors, further enhancing sensitivity. In this work, a 30 µm silicon nitride microring resonator was fabricated and coated with an elastomer to optimize acoustic sensitivity and signal fidelity. The resonator was characterized acoustically, and its capability for optoacoustic tomography was demonstrated. An acoustic bandwidth of 120 MHz and a noise-equivalent pressure of ∼ 7 mPa/Hz1/2 were demonstrated. The spatially dependent impulse response agreed with theoretical predictions, and spurious acoustic signals, such as reverberations and surface acoustic waves, had a marginal impact. High image fidelity optoacoustic tomography of a 20 µm knot was achieved, confirming the detector's imaging capabilities. The results show that silicon nitride offers low signal distortion and high-resolution optoacoustic imaging, proving its versatility for acoustic imaging applications.
