Data on the axial response of steel tubes infilled with rubberised alkali-activated concrete.

ABSTRACT: The presented data cover experimental and numerical axial load-shortening results of steel tubes infilled with rubberised alkali-activated concrete. The experimental data are obtained from 36 concrete filled steel tube specimens with circular and square cross-sections, length-to-diameter/width ratios of 2 and 4, and three different rubber contents in the concrete infill. The data from the numerical assessment cover the axial load-shortening response of over 300 finite element models. These cover a wide range of concrete infill strengths and rubber contents, steel tube grades, specimen widths, and steel tube wall thicknesses. Detailed descriptions of the material and methods, experimental testing, and numerical modelling procedures are also provided. The data reported herein supports the discussion in the research article "Axial compressive behaviour of composite steel elements incorporating rubberised alkali-activated concrete," and in the case of the numerical parametric assessment, give for the first time the full axial load-shortening response of all the models considered.

Project description:Alkali-activated concrete is an eco-friendly construction material that is used to preserve natural resources and promote sustainability in the construction industry. This emerging concrete consists of fine and coarse aggregates and fly ash that constitute the binder when mixed with alkaline activators, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3). However, understanding its tension stiffening and crack spacing and width is of critical importance in fulfilling serviceability requirements. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the tension stiffening and cracking performance of alkali-activated (AA) concrete. The variables considered in this study were compressive strength (fc) and concrete cover-to-bar diameter (Cc/db) ratios. After casting the specimen, they were cured before testing at ambient curing conditions for 180 days to reduce the effects of concrete shrinkage and obtain more realistic cracking results. The results showed that both AA and OPC concrete prisms develop slightly similar axial cracking force and corresponding cracking strain, but OPC concrete prisms exhibited a brittle behavior, resulting in a sudden drop in the load-strain curves at the crack location. In contrast, AA concrete prisms developed more than one crack simultaneously, suggesting a more uniform tensile strength compared to OPC specimens. The tension-stiffening factor (β) of AA concrete exhibited better ductile behavior than OPC concrete due to the strain compatibility between concrete and steel even after crack ignition. It was also observed that increasing the confinement (Cc/db ratio) around the steel bar delays internal crack formation and enhances tension stiffening in AAC. Comparing the experimental crack spacing and width with the values predicted using OPC codes of practice, such as EC2 and ACI 224R, revealed that EC2 tends to underestimate the maximum crack width, while ACI 224R provided better predictions. Thus, models to predict crack spacing and width have been proposed accordingly.

Project description:Concrete structures are susceptible to cracking, which can compromise their integrity and durability. Repairing them with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste causes shrinkage cracks to appear in the repaired surface. Alkali-activated binders offer a promising solution for repairing such cracks. This study aims to develop an alkali-activated paste (AAP) and investigate its effectiveness in repairing concrete cracks. AAPs, featuring varying percentages (0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 1.25%, 1.5%, and 1.75%) of polyethylene (PE) fibers, are found to exhibit characteristics such as strain hardening, multiple plane cracking in tension and flexure tests, and stress-strain softening in compression tests. AAP without PE fibers experienced catastrophic failure in tension and flexure, preventing the determination of its stress-strain relationship. Notably, AAPs with 1.25% PE fibers demonstrated the highest tensile and flexural strength, exceeding that of 0.5% PE fiber reinforced AAP by 100% in tension and 70% in flexure. While 1% PE fibers resulted in the highest compressive strength, surpassing AAP without fibers by 17%. To evaluate the repair performance of AAP, OPC cubes were cast with pre-formed cracks. These cracks were induced by placing steel plates during casting and were designed to be full and half-length with widths of 1.5 mm and 3 mm. AAP both with and without PE fibers led to a substantial improvement in compressive strength, reducing the initial strength loss of 30%-50% before repair to a diminished range of 2%-20% post-repair. The impact of PE fiber content on the compressive strength of repaired OPC cube is marginal, providing more flexibility in using AAP with any fiber percentage while still achieving effective concrete crack repair. Considering economic and environmental factors, along with observed mechanical enhancements, AAPs show promising potential for widespread use in concrete repair and related applications, contributing valuable insights to the field of sustainable construction materials.
