Effects of Erucamide on Fiber "Softness": Linking Single-Fiber Crystal Structure and Mechanical Properties.

ABSTRACT: Erucamide is known to play a critical role in modifying polymer fiber surface chemistry and morphology. However, its effects on fiber crystallinity and mechanical properties remain to be understood. Here, synchrotron nanofocused X-ray Diffraction (nXRD) revealed a bimodal orientation of the constituent polymer chains aligned along the fiber axis and cross-section, respectively. Erucamide promoted crystallinity in the fiber, leading to larger and more numerous lamellae crystallites. The nXRD nanostructual characterization is complemented by single-fiber uniaxial tensile tests, which showed that erucamide significantly affected fiber mechanical properties, decreasing fiber tensile strength and stiffness but enhancing fiber toughness, fracture strain, and ductility. To correlate these single-fiber nXRD and mechanical test results, we propose that erucamide mediated slip at the interfaces between crystallites and amorphous domains during stress-induced single-fiber crystallization, also decreasing the stress arising from the shear displacement of microfibrils and deformation of the macromolecular network. Linking the single-fiber crystal structure with the single-fiber mechanical properties, these findings provide the direct evidence on a single-fiber level for the role of erucamide in enhancing fiber "softness".

Project description:Cannabigerol is a bioactive compound derived from Cannabis sativa. It displays many promising pharmaceutical and nutraceutical properties. Its use and research are complicated by its thermally unstable solid form with low solubility and needle habit, preventing easy formulation into tablets or capsules. To overcome these problems, we conducted a crystallization screening with the aim to discover new crystal forms with enhanced properties. Though polymorph and solvate screenings did not yield new forms, the cocrystal screening was successful. Two cocrystals were discovered, one with piperazine and another with tetramethylpirazine, both in a 1:1 ratio. The latter can exist in three polymorphic forms. Both offer improvements in the melting point and crystal habit, and the cocrystal with tetramethylpirazine also shows a significant enhancement in dissolution rate. The new solid forms were analysed by a combination of methods, including X-ray powder diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and intrinsic dissolution rate. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were used to solve the crystal structures, which were then compared with that of pure CBG. The crystal morphologies and surfaces were comprehensively analysed using the CSD-Particle suite, with various properties correlated against dissolution rates. While surface attachment energy and roughness (rugosity) did not show significant effects, the concentration of unsatisfied hydrogen-bond donors displayed a positive correlation. There were two parameters with a very strong correlation to dissolution rate: the propensity for interactions with water molecules, determined by the maximum range in the full interaction maps on the surface calculated for the water probe, and also the difference in the positive and negative electrostatic charges. These parameters proved highly predictive of aqueous dissolution, offering immense utility in pharmaceutical development.

Project description:The determination of the full crystal structure of the uranyl sulfate mineral uranopilite, (UO2)6(SO4)O2(OH)6·14H2O, including the positions of the hydrogen atoms within the corresponding unit cell, has not been feasible to date due to the poor quality of its X-ray diffraction pattern. In this paper, the complete crystal structure of uranopilite is established for the first time by means of first principles solid-state calculations based in density functional theory employing a large plane wave basis set and pseudopotential functions. The computed unit-cell parameters and structural data for the non-hydrogen atoms are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. The computed X-ray diffraction pattern is also in satisfactory agreement with the experimental pattern. The infrared spectrum of uranopilite is collected from a natural crystal specimen originating in Jáchymov (Czech Republic) and computed employing density functional perturbation theory. The theoretical and experimental vibrational spectra are highly consistent. Therefore, a full assignment of the bands in the experimental infrared spectrum is performed using a normal mode analysis of the first principles vibrational results. One overtone and six combination bands are recognized in the infrared spectrum. The elasticity tensor and phonon spectra of uranopilite are computed from the optimized crystal structure and used to analyze its mechanical stability, to obtain a rich set of elastic properties and to derive its fundamental thermodynamic properties as a function of temperature. Uranopilite is shown to have a large mechanical anisotropy and to exhibit the negative Poisson's ratio and negative linear compressibility phenomena. The calculated specific heat and entropy at 298.15 K are 179.6 and 209.0 J K-1 mol-1, respectively. The computed fundamental thermodynamic functions of uranopilite are employed to obtain its thermodynamic functions of formation in terms of the elements and the thermodynamic properties of a set of chemical reactions relating uranopilite with a representative group of secondary phases of spent nuclear fuel. From the reaction thermodynamic data, the relative stability of uranopilite with respect to these secondary phases is evaluated as a function of temperature and under different hydrogen peroxide concentrations. From the results, it follows that uranopilite has a very large thermodynamic stability in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The high stability of uranopilite under this condition justify its early crystallization in the paragenetic sequence of secondary phases occurring when uranium dioxide is exposed to sulfur-rich solutions.
