Resource and location sharing in wireless networks.

ABSTRACT: With more and more demand from devices to use wireless communication networks, there has been an increased interest in resource sharing among operators, to give a better link quality. However, in the analysis of the benefits of resource sharing among these operators, the important factor of co-location is often overlooked. Indeed, often in wireless communication networks, different operators co-locate: they place their base stations at the same locations due to cost efficiency. We therefore use stochastic geometry to investigate the effect of co-location on the benefits of resource sharing. We develop an intricate relation between the co-location factor and the optimal radius to operate the network, which shows that indeed co-location is an important factor to take into account. We also investigate the limiting behavior of the expected gains of sharing, and find that for unequal operators, sharing may not always be beneficial when taking co-location into account.

Resource sharing in technologically defined social networks.

Project description:Technologically enabled sharing-economy networks are changing the way humans trade and collaborate. Here, using a novel 'Wi-Fi sharing' game, we explored determinants of human sharing strategy. Subjects (N = 1,950) participated in a networked game in which they could choose how to allocate a limited, but personally not usable, resource (representing unused Wi-Fi bandwidth) to immediate network neighbors. We first embedded N = 600 subjects into 30 networks, experimentally manipulating the range over which subjects could connect. We find that denser networks decrease any wealth inequality, but that this effect saturates. Individuals' benefit is shaped by their network position, with having many partners who in turn have few partners being especially beneficial. We propose a new, simplified "sharing centrality" metric for quantifying this. Further experiments (N = 1,200) confirm the robustness of the effect of network structure on sharing behavior. Our findings suggest the possibility of interventions to help more evenly distribute shared resources over networks.

Maximizing Resource Efficiency in Wireless Networks through Virtualization and Opportunistic Channel Allocation.

Project description:Wireless cellular networks have become increasingly important in providing data access to cellular users via a grid of cells. Many applications are considered to read data from smart meters for potable water, gas, or electricity. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to assign paired channels for intelligent metering through wireless connectivity, which is particularly relevant due to the commercial advantages that a virtual operator currently provides. The algorithm considers the behavior of secondary spectrum channels assigned to smart metering in a cellular network. It explores spectrum reuse in a virtual mobile operator to optimize dynamic channel assignment. The proposed algorithm exploits the white holes in the cognitive radio spectrum and considers the coexistence of different uplink channels, resulting in improved efficiency and reliability for smart metering. The work also defines the average user transmission throughput and total smart meter cell throughput as metrics to measure performance, providing insights into the effects of the chosen values on the overall performance of the proposed algorithm.

Enhanced meta-heuristic optimization of resource efficiency in multi-relay underground wireless sensor networks

Project description:Achieving a balanced energy and spectral resource utilization is an interesting key design to extend the lifetime of underground wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) where sensor nodes are equipped with small limited energy batteries and communicate through a challenging soil environment. In this article, we apply an improved meta-heuristic algorithm, based on the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), for multi-relay UWSNs where cooperative relay nodes amplify and forward sensed data, received from the buried source nodes, to the aboveground base station. Hence, the optimal nodes transmission powers, maximizing the network resource efficiency, are obtained and used to select beneficial relay nodes. The algorithm enhances the standard SSA by considering the chaotic map for salps population initialization and the uniform crossover technique for salps positions updates. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the SSA in resource efficiency optimization and network lifetime extension. The obtained gain increases when the number of cooperative relay nodes increases. Furthermore, simulations prove the efficiency of the proposed algorithm against other meta-heuristic algorithms.

Effects of Resource Sharing Networks on Community Anti-Drug Coalitions' Outcomes: A Social Network Analysis.

Project description:Substance use-related problems continue to be a national public health crisis despite years of prevention efforts. Community anti-drug coalitions are well positioned to address substance use at local levels. Coalitions often rely on their members to connect to resources they need to address community issues and plan for sustainability over time. Such capacity building occurs through voluntary cooperation among members, making it essential to understand the role network connections play. This study sought to determine whether structural characteristics of coalitions' resource sharing networks impact members' perceptions of community improvement and coalition sustainability. Surveys at two timepoints collected data from 68 coalitions in Pennsylvania and Missouri on members' connections or ties to share information, personnel, money, or other types of collaboration. Analyses examined how coalition-level measurements of sectoral diversity, density, and resource sharing centralization, respectively, were associated with members' perceptions of community improvement, sustainability planning, and coalition sustainability. Sectoral diversity and centralization were unrelated to study outcomes. Density was also unrelated with perceived community improvement and sustainability planning. However, two facets of cooperative density were positively associated with perceived coalition sustainability: the density of ties to share information and the density of multiple types of collaborative ties. This study suggests that both information and other collaborative ties foster perceived coalition sustainability, although not community improvement.

A novel power efficient location-based cooperative routing with transmission power-upper-limit for wireless sensor networks.

Project description:The extensive usage of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has led to the development of many power- and energy-efficient routing protocols. Cooperative routing in WSNs can improve performance in these types of networks. In this paper we discuss the existing proposals and we propose a routing algorithm for wireless sensor networks called Power Efficient Location-based Cooperative Routing with Transmission Power-upper-limit (PELCR-TP). The algorithm is based on the principle of minimum link power and aims to take advantage of nodes cooperation to make the link work well in WSNs with a low transmission power. In the proposed scheme, with a determined transmission power upper limit, nodes find the most appropriate next nodes and single-relay nodes with the proposed algorithm. Moreover, this proposal subtly avoids non-working nodes, because we add a Bad nodes Avoidance Strategy (BAS). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm with BAS can significantly improve the performance in reducing the overall link power, enhancing the transmission success rate and decreasing the retransmission rate.

Location-aware ingestible microdevices for wireless monitoring of gastrointestinal dynamics.

Project description:Localization and tracking of ingestible microdevices in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is valuable for the diagnosis and treatment of GI disorders. Such systems require a large field-of-view of tracking, high spatiotemporal resolution, wirelessly operated microdevices and a non-obstructive field generator that is safe to use in practical settings. However, the capabilities of current systems remain limited. Here, we report three dimensional (3D) localization and tracking of wireless ingestible microdevices in the GI tract of large animals in real time and with millimetre-scale resolution. This is achieved by generating 3D magnetic field gradients in the GI field-of-view using high-efficiency planar electromagnetic coils that encode each spatial point with a distinct magnetic field magnitude. The field magnitude is measured and transmitted by the miniaturized, low-power and wireless microdevices to decode their location as they travel through the GI tract. This system could be useful for quantitative assessment of the GI transit-time, precision targeting of therapeutic interventions and minimally invasive procedures.

Food-Sharing Networks in Lamalera, Indonesia: Status, Sharing, and Signaling.

Project description:Costly signaling has been proposed as a possible mechanism to explain food sharing in foraging populations. This sharing-as-signaling hypothesis predicts an association between sharing and status. Using exponential random graph modeling (ERGM), this prediction is tested on a social network of between-household food-sharing relationships in the fishing and sea-hunting village of Lamalera, Indonesia. Previous analyses (Nolin 2010) have shown that most sharing in Lamalera is consistent with reciprocal altruism. The question addressed here is whether any additional variation may be explained as sharing-as-signaling by high-status households. The results show that high-status households both give and receive more than other households, a pattern more consistent with reciprocal altruism than costly signaling. However, once the propensity to reciprocate and household productivity are controlled, households of men holding leadership positions show greater odds of unreciprocated giving when compared to households of non-leaders. This pattern of excessive giving by leaders is consistent with the sharing-as-signaling hypothesis. Wealthy households show the opposite pattern, giving less and receiving more than other households. These households may reciprocate in a currency other than food or their wealth may attract favor-seeking behavior from others. Overall, status covariates explain little variation in the sharing network as a whole, and much of the sharing observed by high-status households is best explained by the same factors that explain sharing by other households. This pattern suggests that multiple mechanisms may operate simultaneously to promote sharing in Lamalera and that signaling may motivate some sharing by some individuals even within sharing regimes primarily maintained by other mechanisms.

Scalable networks of wireless bioelectronics using magnetoelectrics.

Project description:Networks of miniature bioelectronic implants would enable precise measurement and manipulation of the complex and distributed physiological systems in the body. For example, sensing and stimulation nodes throughout the heart, brain, or peripheral nervous system would more accurately track and treat disease or support prosthetic technologies with many degrees of freedom. A main challenge to creating this type of in-body bioelectronic network is the fact that wireless power and data transfer are often inefficient when communicating through biological tissues. This challenge is typically compounded as one increases the number of implants within the network. Here, we show that magnetoelectric wireless data and power transfer enable a network of millimeter-sized bioelectronic implants where the power transfer efficiency of the system improves as the number of implanted devices increases. Using this property, we demonstrate networks of wireless battery-free bioelectronics ranging from 1 to 6 implants where the wireless power transfer efficiency for the system increases from 0.2% to 1.3%, with each node in the network receiving 2.2 mW at a distance of 1 cm. We use this system for efficient and robust wireless data and power transfer to demonstrate proof-of-concept networks of miniature spinal cord stimulators and cardiac pacing devices in large animals. The scalability of this network architecture enabled by magnetoelectric wireless power transfer provides a platform for building wireless closed-loop networks of bioelectronic implants for next-generation electronic medicine.

Geographic wormhole detection in wireless sensor networks.

Project description:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are ubiquitous and pervasive, and therefore; highly susceptible to a number of security attacks. Denial of Service (DoS) attack is considered the most dominant and a major threat to WSNs. Moreover, the wormhole attack represents one of the potential forms of the Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Besides, crafting the wormhole attack is comparatively simple; though, its detection is nontrivial. On the contrary, the extant wormhole defense methods need both specialized hardware and strong assumptions to defend against static and dynamic wormhole attack. The ensuing paper introduces a novel scheme to detect wormhole attacks in a geographic routing protocol (DWGRP). The main contribution of this paper is to detect malicious nodes and select the best and the most reliable neighbors based on pairwise key pre-distribution technique and the beacon packet. Moreover, this novel technique is not subject to any specific assumption, requirement, or specialized hardware, such as a precise synchronized clock. The proposed detection method is validated by comparisons with several related techniques in the literature, such as Received Signal Strength (RSS), Authentication of Nodes Scheme (ANS), Wormhole Detection uses Hound Packet (WHOP), and Wormhole Detection with Neighborhood Information (WDI) using the NS-2 simulator. The analysis of the simulations shows promising results with low False Detection Rate (FDR) in the geographic routing protocols.

Resource sharing by outer membrane vesicles from a citrus pathogen

Project description:The causative agent of citrus canker disease, Xanthomonas citri pv. citri, was found to produce copious amounts of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), frequently forming long membranous tubes under different culture conditions. Lipidomic analysis revealed significant differences in lipid composition between purified vesicles in relation to whole cells. The results suggest an enrichment in saturated cardiolipins and a decrease in unsaturated lipids in the OMV samples, possibly granting them a more rigid structure while allowing their high degree of curvature caused by their small diameters. The vesicles’ proteome was found to be significantly enriched in TonB-dependent receptors related to the acquisition of different nutrients, including siderophores. These iron-binding molecules were evidenced to be present in purified X. citri OMVs, along with essential metals including iron itself, zinc, and manganese quantified by elemental analysis. The availability of vesicle-associated nutrients to be incorporated by cells was demonstrated by the use of OMVs as the sole carbon source for bacterial growth. At last, the vesicles also presented esterase and protease activities, which have been associated with virulence in phytopathogens. These evidences point that X. citri cells can use OMVs to share resources within microbial communities, which has potential implications for microbial interactions and plant colonization, affecting their survival and persistence on the host and in the environment.
