ABSTRACT: Fog causes enhancement of bacterial loading in the atmosphere. Current study represents the impact of occurrences of fog on the alteration of diversity of airborne bacteria and their network computed from metagenomic data of airborne samples collected at Arthauli (25.95°N, 85.10°E) situated at central Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during 1-14 January 2021. A distinct bacterial diversity with a complex network is identified in foggy condition due to the enrichment of unique types of bacteria. Present investigation highlights a statistically significant enrichment of airborne pathogenic bacteria found in a unique ecosystem within air evolved due to the occurrences of fog over central IGP. In the foggy network, Cutibacterium, an opportunistic pathogen, is identified to be interacting maximum (21 edges) with other bacteria with statistically significant copresence relation, which are responsible for various infections for human beings. A 40-60% increase (p < 0.01) in the abundance of pathogenic bacteria for respiratory and skin diseases is noticed in fog period. Among the fog-enriched bacteria, Cutibacterium, Herbaspirillum, Paenibacillus, and Tsukamurella are examples of opportunistic bacteria causing various respiratory diseases, while Paenibacillus can even cause skin cancer and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Project description:Fog supports an increase in airborne microbial loading by providing water with nutrients and protecting it from harmful incoming solar radiation. To improve our present understanding of fog-induced alteration in an atmospheric microbial community, a study was conducted during 1 to 14 January 2021 for continuous investigation of airborne bacteria over a rural site, Arthauli (25.95°N, 85.10°E), in central Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) in India. An increase of 36% ± 0.4% in airborne bacterial loading was noticed under fog versus prefog conditions, and a decrease of 48% ± 0.4% was noticed under the postfog condition. Airborne bacterial loading had a strong correlation with RH (R2 = 0.56; P < 0.05), temperature (R2 = -0.55, P < 0.05), and wind speed (R2 = -0.52, P < 0.05). Unique types of bacteria, representing about 29% of the whole community, were detected only under foggy conditions, likely by a continuous supply of nutrients and water from a cold, calm, and humid atmosphere. As a result, no significant diurnal variation of bacterial loading was noticed on a foggy day, with a higher daily mean concentration of about (8.4 ± 1.7) × 105 cells · m-3 than that on a typical winter day [(6.3 ± 3.8) × 105 cells · m-3]. A typical winter day experienced about a 60% decrease in bacterial loading in the afternoon in comparison to that in the morning. A 3-day back-trajectory analysis suggests a slow movement of airmass along with the wind blowing from west to central IGP. Fog pauses wind movement, which reduces continuous transportation of urban sources while increasing airborne bacteria from local sources. The abundances of Gp6 (14.8% ± 8.6%), Anaeromyxobacter (7.1% ± 2.8%), and Gp7 (6.8 ± 2.6%) have been observed to increase due to occurrences of fog over central IGP. IMPORTANCE Fog was investigated in the present study as a cause of alteration in the airborne microbial community. Occurrences of fog were responsible for an increase in airborne microbial loading (36%) over central IGP in India due to the easy availability of nutrients and water in the air and dimming of harmful solar radiation. More than 90% of unique bacteria were detected under fog (64%) and postfog (28%) conditions. A few bacteria, like Gp18 (0.5% ± 0.3%), Alicyclobacillus (0.5% ± 0.1%), Sinomonas (0.4% ± 0.2%), and Phenylobacterium (0.4% ± 0.2%), were detected only under foggy conditions. A strong correlation between meteorological parameters and bacterial loading was found in the current research work. The present study provides additional support toward a new direction in interdisciplinary science for the detailed investigations of the effects of meteorological conditions on airborne bacteria and their implications for society.

Project description:Aerosols are an important part of Earth's atmosphere. They can absorb, scatter, or reflect the incoming solar radiation, which results in heating or cooling of Earth, thus impacting its climate. It affects the health of exposed human population adversely, reduces visibility, disturbs environmental systems, and causes material damage. This study summarizes the research carried out to understand the role of aerosol load and its physicochemical characteristics on occurrence, frequency, and magnitude of haze and fog events during wintertime within the Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP) in the past decade. For most species, the highest concentration was measured during foggy events at night-time over the winter season. A few species such as water-soluble organic and inorganic carbon (WSOC and WSIC), K+, SO4 2-, and NO3 -, owing to their hygroscopic nature, were efficiently scavenged, resulting in their lower concentration within the interstitial aerosol during fog episodes. Oligomerization with hydroxy and carbonyl functional groups during AFP (activating fog period) and DFP (dissipating fog period), respectively, accompanied by acidic aerosol (having catalytic ability) and high aerosol liquid water content conditions was found to be significant. Whereas the fragmentation process was dominant along with functionalization of -RCOOH or carbonyl (aldehyde/ketone) and -RCOOH moieties during FP (fog period) and PoFP (post-fog period), respectively. Transition metals play an important role in aqueous production of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) especially during the night-time. Crustal sources had the highest scavenging efficiency along with WSOC playing an important role in nucleation scavenging. Fine droplets had a higher concentration of species with a larger fraction of highly oxidized organic matter (OM) as compared to coarse or medium size droplets. Also, a new approach to calculate absorption by black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) was proposed, which found the water-soluble brown carbon (WSBrC) absorption value in aerosol to be up to 1.8 times higher than that measured in their corresponding aqueous extracts. Organic aerosol plays a vital role in facilitating fog formation and is responsible for the longer residence time in the ambient atmosphere. Ammonia plays an important role in stabilizing organic aerosol and aids to this recurring haze-fog-haze cycle that is dominant during wintertime in the IGP. Therefore, controlling the major anthropogenic sources of organic aerosol and ammonia should be our top priority in this part of the world.

Project description:Deteriorating soil health, diminishing soil organic carbon (SOC), development of subsurface hard compact layer and declining system productivity are barriers to achieving sustainable production in the traditional rice-wheat cropping system (TA) in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain of India. Conservation agriculture (CA), which favours minimum soil disturbance, crop residue retention and crop diversification could be a viable alternative to the TA to address most of those major problems. With that in mind, a long-term experiment is being implemented at ICAR-RCER, Patna, Bihar, India, with four treatments: (a) TA, (b) full CA (fCA) and (c and d) partial CA (pCA1 and pCA2), differing in crop establishment methods, cropping system and crop residue management in a randomized complete block design. Measurement of soil health parameters was carried out in the 11th year of the experiment. The results revealed a beneficial effect of CA and 46 and 40% increase in SOC concentration and stock, respectively, under fCA over TA in the 0-7.5-cm soil layer. The effect of partial CA (pCA1 and pCA2) was variable, but an increasing trend was always observed under pCA compared to TA. There was an enrichment in SOC content of aggregates under CA irrespective of size class; however, no relation was found between SOC content and aggregate diameter. The contribution of macroaggregates to SOC stock was larger (36-66%) under CA in the 0-7.5-cm soil layer. Adoption of CA improved the macroaggregate content, MWD and GMD of aggregates, and aggregation ratio. Soil macropore content was greater under fCA, whereas other parameters were similar among treatments. The impact of CA was mostly limited to 0-7.5 cm soil layer and a maximum up to 15 cm soil depth while evaluation until 60 cm soil depth was realized. The yield of rice in CA was comparable to or higher than in TA, whereas the system rice equivalent yield was always higher (38-53%) under CA than under the conventional practices. Therefore, a CA-based cropping system must be encouraged, to increase SOC status, improve aggregation stability and, consequently, sustain or increase system productivity, in order to achieve food and nutritional security in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain of India.HighlightsEffects of long-term conservation agriculture (CA) on soil C, aggregation and yield were evaluated.CA improved SOC concentration and stock by 46 and 40%, as well as macroaggregate SOC stock by 36-66%.Macro-aggregation and mean weight diameter improved in CA but was mostly limited to a shallow soil depth.CA can be promoted for sustainability of a rice-wheat system due to higher productivity (38-53%).
